Falcons Point Differential By Quarter
I found an interesting little post at the Pro Football Reference Blog that asks the question:
"Which teams have played the best in each quarter this season?"
They take the Points scored in each Quarter, along with the Points Allowed in each Quarter to show which teams have the higest Margin per Quater (per Game). I updated the results through the Week 10 games:
1Q: -2.2 Margin per Game (#26)
2Q: +5.8 Margin per Game (#2)
3Q: -1.6 Margin per Game (#26)
4Q: +3.2 Margin per Game (#2)
That's right, we have the 2nd best Point Differential in the Second and Forth Quarters, but the 7th worst Point Differential in the First and Third Quarters.

This is cool
but the differential is so small…it’s hard to say if it means anything at all. The 2nd quarter differential is a little bigger, so I guess we need a quarter to figure things out?
I'll tell you what it means.
It means we like Matt Ryan and Erik Coleman a bunch.
Ba dum, chssss.

i think this stat simply has too many variables
especially one as arbitrary as a coin toss

This is incredibly easy to explain
The Falcons start sluggishly every week. They get to the second quarter and realize, by gummit, they’ve gotta climb back in/blow a team out. They come into the second half with a lead and sit on it. When that lead evaporates by the fourth quarter, they come roaring back again.

Matt Is Better OC
I agree, but if I recall correctly the no huddle is used much more in 2nd and 4th quater. I think Matt is more agressive in his playn calling. I do not think MM has the killer drive

maybe he's having woman problems MM

Interesting stats
I was under the impression that we were usually pretty strong in the first half overall.
the 2008 team would kick our teams (butt)
in the first quarter.
We just need the 2008 first quarter offense and 1-4 qtr special teams and we might be the 2007 NE Patriots/2007 Super Bowl game NYGiants.

The Ravens game
We had possession for most of the first half
Did it not look like the Ravens D was just wearing down from being on the field so much?
I feel like one of the main strengths of this team is its conditioning. They don’t get tired, which is why we have gotten so many comeback wins

numbers here are slightly misleading orang3b
good statistics, but here’s what missing:
these numbers don’t show the trend, and there’s one. In the first 4 or 5 games (can’t recall the details, I saw it on the screen in one of the games) we were dead last in points differential in the 1st quarter, and were the best in the 4 quarter differential.
but things have been changing the other way. now we come out blasting in the 1st quarter and build a comfortable lead, but then let it slip away in the 3 and 4 quarters. that’s the reason we’re no longer the best in the 4th and no longer the worst in the 1st.
point differential is a good stat overall, but kind of… irrelevant. if you add those differentials per quarter you’ll get the total game differential in points scored and allowed. and in that stat we’re not even #1 in NFCS – we’re behind the dreaded Saints. and that’s simply because 5 out of 7 wins we got were by less than a TD, and one of the two losses was a near blowout. does that tip anyone to say we’re worse than the Saints? No, unless you’re a moron named LaCanfora.

Even NFL.com stats aren't recent trend favorable
They still go with the average, and don’t consider if a team has changed a QB, RB, OC, DC, scheme, facing a stronger or weaker opponent or something changed within the team that skews the previous results.
If a RB gets 3, 4, 5, 90, 3, 7, and 5 yards, it’s going to say he gets 17 yards per carry. But that really isn’t true.

I agree
just wanted to highlight the fact that the things are changing, but now we’re into the other extreme…

i'm a little lost
What extreme do you mean?

here
in the first several games we were sluggish in the beginning, and had to play catchup – but eventually win (except for those 2 games). and that was reflected in the stat that said we were the worst in the 1st quarter but would later make up for that by being the best in the 4th.
now in the past 3 games we’re onto the other extreme. we start blazing, and build 2-3 score leads (BAL, TB, CIN) but then fall into a trap and let the other team catch up only to pull miracle win at the end.

Yesterday v Rams
Was exactly like this – started out slow in 1Q (3-7) and 3Q (7-7), but they were great in the 2Q (13-3) and 4Q (11-0). Maybe the trend was “reversing” only because the previous 3 games were all at home.

Woah woah
Point differential per Quarter might be irrelevant (I just thought it was a fun thing to look at), but I think the overall number does have something valuable to tell us about the strength of a team. Right now the Falcons (8-2, +64) are a game ahead of the Saints (7-3, +65) in the standings, but that Point Differential is telling me that the teams are virtually even… as opposed to the Bucs (7-3, +3), who I believe are a much weaker team. You can go game-by-game to see who each team beat, and by how much; but 10 games into the season, it’s just easier to look at the DIFF to me.
Is San Diego (+42) the best team in the AFCW, even though they’re 3rd in the division? Is Jacksonville (-50) the worst team in the AFCS even though they’re tied for 1st now? I guess we’ll see how it plays out…

It is a good indication of how dominant a team is.
Thanks for posting the numbers, it looks like the falcons as a whole team has hormonal imbalance..
