Falcons-Browns Series History

This is a continuation of a weekly series featuring the Falcons 2010 opponents. This week, the Browns.

This hasn't been much of a series. Dating back to 1966, the Browns lead the series, 10-2. Most of these games have been just plain awful. Even when the Falcons had some decents teams, 1978 L 24-16, 2002, also L 24-16.

The most disappointing game for me was 1981. The Falcons were 3-0, coming off a pasting of the 49ers, and were looking good, 10-0 after the first quarter, but turnovers, 5 of them, and the inability to convert Brownie turnovers, and penalties cost the Falcons, 28-17. The game was played in Cleveland. That game was the start of the spiral downward from there. They only won four more games after that.

The other two losses were playoff years, and the 2002 should of been a win, but kicking FG's all the time doesn't cut it, and that game almost cost the Falcons a playoff spot, but thanks to the Panthers(!) beating the Saints helped that one out. The only two victories up until this point came in 1971, a 31-14 flogging of the elves in Cleveland, and in 1993, a 17-14 win in the ATL.

The rest of these games are ugly, all Browns victories, especially the 38-3 destructo job in 1987, but that was a pretty good Browns team that did that. I think that the Falcons are about to change things this weekend, in my opinion, and take out the Brownies in the CLE. About time!

Next week, Bird Bowl 2. The Eagles!!!
