Ask Cincy Jungle
Hey guys, Bengals fan here. I'll just be brief here and let you guys take it away.
Our offense is not great right now but we're hoping they got this sorted out during the bye week. There's still a raging debate over whether Palmer still has it or not and no one on CJ really knows if he has lost it or if it's just the team.
Ask anything you want about the state of the Bengals or whatever. Also, I hope to get some more members of CJ over here to help answer your questions.
Oh, one more quick edit. If you guys want to share your Falcons knowledge go over to Cincy Jungle and help out the guy who posted that thread. He'll probably have a lot of questions to deal with and need all the help he can get.
Ask away!

What’s your view on Carson Palmer and your QB situation? Should the Bengals replace him after this season? Is his arm cooked?

My personal view?
I think he’s still a good (not great) QB and he will continue to be good for a few years. I still feel that there are two major problems with the offense and neither is Palmer. Those two problems are the offensive line and the playcalling.
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Bob Bratkowski but he’s our offensive coordinator and he is the single worst playcaller in the NFL. You can clearly see that when they run the no-huddle and Carson is the one calling the plays, the offense flows better. Unfortunately, our coach doesn’t like running the no-huddle much because he still insists on a clock control game.
So what I guess I’m trying to say is that I think Palmer is still a good player but bad coaching and a mediocre offensive line hamper him.

yeah I remember
you guys where (complaining) about him on your board after the Gus Johnson goes beserk call game against the Broncos in 2009.
But aren’t you guys just as pissed at Palmer for all the picks and missed throws he keeps putting on your team?
It’s a shame your team is a shadow of it’s 2005 Offense.

Believe me, they are.
If it’s not Brat’s head, it’s Palmer’s and the riot is almost uncontrollable. The only thing that soothes people at the moment is the fact that we’re one game under .500 and there’s still 11 games left and we play better ball against better teams.
I get told all the time “Palmer is terrible, Bengals should draft a new guy.” It suuucks. It’s like trying to defend Kyle Orton without all his monster stats this season.

Broncos don't seem to have that same defense and running game
But Kyle Orton sounds like a probowler
Josh Mc D must be a good QB coach.
Maybe you guys team or us Falcons could use him as our OC.

Welcome to the sunny South!
How’s the Bengals defense?
We were confident of the Falcons on the D-side until, um…recently.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
GO FALCONS!!
Loaded with talent.
Honestly, they’re the only reason we have 2 wins. The way our owner likes to build a team is to get great talent for as cheap as possible through signing talented guys who have had legal trouble. Our defense is loaded up with former first round picks who, for some reason or another, no one wanted.
In Cincy, we also consider our defensive coordinator one of the best in the league. His name is Mike Zimmer and he does a great job getting the best out of his players.
They had some difficulty against the Pats and then shut down the Ravens and Panthers the next two weeks. They’ve had a few slip-ups the past two weeks against the Browns and Bucs but they’re still the pride of our team.

I like Mike Zimmer, I've heard a decent bit about him
You have the capability of steamrollering us worse than Philly, but your OC is like MM…he won’t let you.
by TheIronLotus on Oct 18, 2010 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions
No! he just can't do it.
He’s incapable of running a offense. Lousy game planning (like very predictable play calling) and about 6 different plays in the book. By the end of the 1st quarter, your DC will have a lock on what our OC is doing and he won’t change the game plan until the last 2-4 minutes in the game when we are losing..
Exactly
That’s how I view Mularkey. Predictable to the point where an armchair DC like me can tell EXACTLY what he wants to do.

The thing is ,
My son (a Bengals fan) has a half brother that lives close to Atlanta and is a Falcons fan. He hasn’t talked to him in years. Go figure!
We had Mike Zimmer
He was our bright spot in our 2007 season.
Oddly enough you guys lost Hue Jackson to us, but we lost Zimmer to you guys.
If only Jackson and Zimmer can co-exist together on your staff….

RE:Zimmer
Zimmer was w/Atlanta durings the lost season of 2007 for them. He actually just had an AWESOME write up from Joe Reedy (Bengals Beat writer) and it talks only about his hate for Bobby Petrino….which i’m sure you falcon fans will LOVE….Sorry about the tremendously long post, but here is the article (my hyperlinks never work on SBNation Blogs…
Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer is not one to mince words. So when it came time to ask him about his first return to Atlanta since the 2007 season from hell, when the Falcons went 4-12, and Petrino resigned with three games left to take the job at Arkansas, Zimmer pulled out the Ginsu knives.
On going back to Atlanta, Zimmer said about that season "I was never even there. As far as I am concerned. I never even was there. When a coach quits in the middle of the year and ruins a bunch of people’s families and doesn’t’ have enough guts to at least finish out the year. I am not a part of that."
Pretty good stuff, but it gets even better in his appraisal of Petrino: "He is a coward. Put that in quotes. He ruined a bunch of people’s lives, a bunch of people’s families, kids, because he didn’t have enough nuts to stay there and finish the job. That’s the truth."
When asked if he had seen a two days like that before, where the Falcons lost on Monday Night Football, a coach resigns and then is doing "Woo Pig Sooey" 24 hours later in front of Arkansas boosters, Zimmer said: "No, most people in football have enough courage about them and enough fight to stick through something and not quit halfway through the year. It is cowardly.
"He came in and said he resigned, he would talk to us all at a later date, walked out of the office and no one has ever talked to him since. Not that anybody wanted to.
"He’s a gutless b—–d. Quote that. I don’t give a s—."
When told that we might not be able to use the B word, Zimmer went one better: "How about this, gutless MF. You can use that."
Two lessons out of this — you don’t mess with Mike Zimmer and Zimmer won’t be attending any Pro Days in Fayetteville anytime soon.

What do Cincy fans think of the TOchocinco Show?
Not the show itself, but the WR combination. I think it is ridiculously entertaining and kind of makes the Bengals a soft spot in my football fandom. I love the entertainment factor of the game and I think that duo epidimizes it.
Also, do you all really believe that Ochocinco has been “off his game” because of the “lack of trash talk”?
Last but not least. Is it mandatory for Cincy fans to follow TO and Ocho on twitter? I know I do, but I’m curious about fans. Are they entertained or annoyed by the antics?
Well, okay, on more question. Are you sick of people associating TO and Ocho as everything Bengals? Like… you cannot even bring up a conversation about the Bengals without those two’s names coming up. I guess this fits into the whole “annoyed or entertained” category.
If I could get a handful of different fans opinions on this one that would be great. I really am curious because, as I stated earlier, being a casual Bengals fan that does not live in Cincy, I am quite entertained by those two.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
Half of the fans are annoyed and the other half are entertained
Me personally, I like the duo combination on the field but not the antics, such as their TV show. They have games to prepare for and doing other things such as the show tells me they don’t have their head in football, wanting to be STARS before football players. They really haven’t done any TD celebrations lately so that seems not to be a problem. Although twitter is getting them fined, but it’s their money. As far as Chad trash talking, that’s OK with me as long as he can write that check and cash it too. It does seem to be a fact that he plays better when he’s trash talking and he hasn’t been doing it all season. Some of the local media/analysts have put a lot of blame on Ocho, for running bad routes and not being focused. I expect the trash talking will start this week with your CBs.
So with this being said, I don’t follow them except on the field. There will be plenty of time for antics and TV shows in the off season. We have/had high expectations with this 10’ team this year and it looks like they are going backwards and not forward. They need to get their heads in the game and win some football, like we know they can.
Aww, btw, that includes our lousy OC that has his own head up his own ass.. I had to include that.
Whyus summed up my thoughts on their antics, but I'll add something about Chad.
Although it seems really weird that he plays better when he talks trash, it’s true. That’s how he gets himself pumped up for the game. He’s so competitive that if him and a corner are firing back and forth all week, he wants to torch them more than ever.
The desire to win should be enough to get him fired up, but sometimes it isn’t.
Win a ring without the king! Cavs=2011 champs?
I think that might be because EVERYONE has the desire to win.
He just uses the trash talk to get that extra edge.
And in a game of inches, every last little bit counts.

3 Questions
1.) What do you think about the state of your running game. How has Cedric Benson performed so far and how do you think he’ll do against the Falcons.
2.) Jermaine Gresham has the makings of a man-beast-child. How has he been so far this season and do you think he’ll be a major part of the offense. Is he the red-zone target the Bengals been looking for?
3.) Jordan Shipley seems to be the Wes Welker of the Bengals. Is he better than expected. Does he fit the same style? Is he the replacement for TJHoush? How will he be integrated against the Falcons who lead the league in interceptions? Do you think the passing game will take a back seat to the running game?

1) Benson has been underwhelming. But I think this is largely a result of questionable playcalling and the offensive line not opening up holes. He has made plays though. Atlanta has a top 10 run defense so I don’t expect much, he’s a monster on third and manageable and I hope they stick with him in those situations.
2) He’s looked great. You can’t ask for much more in a rookie season. However he is a liability in pass protection, which hopefully he can learn. Carson loves him on the screen, expect them to run it a half dozen times. And I do fully believe that he will be a huge part of the offense for years to come, including being a red zone target.
3) He’s a machine. He is tough, very smart, and always open. And after our last third round receiver to come from a great program (Andre Caldwell) he is above and beyond what we could have hoped for. He is very much a Wes Welker type, and not just because he’s white. Is he a replacement for Housh? I’d say so, in that he’s that third down possession guy that Carson can rely on. He’ll be the starting #3 and Carson will look for him on short passes over the middle, expect some first downs out of him. I really hope the passing game doesn’t take a back seat, because you guys are much easier to beat through the air than on the ground. Knowing our coaches though, Benson will get 30 touches.
Big fan of Jordan Shipley
I’ll be watching his career with interest.

1) benson is solid, but i agree with the subpar line play being a factor for his lack of success so far. i dont agree that he is a monster on 3rd down because he rarely plays 3rd downs. usually Leonard is in, when healthy, and as of late bernard Scott. i dont know why he doesnt stay in, because he can have moderate success on 3rd down, but typically we pull him on 3rd downs.
2)i love gresham. he is on track to have a better rookie season than your eventual hall-of-famer Gonzales. he does need to work on his blocking, but after being against drafting him, i am totally in love with him now.
3)big suprise. great hands, finds the seams, and is pretty tough. hope we can keep him long term. one of our most productive receivers with the best catch to drop ratio at the moment.
1) The offensive line hasn’t been good. Benson hasn’t hit the holes as fast as he should be, but if the line opens up holes for him he’ll be good.
2) We love him and have faith that he’ll be a pro bowler. Like Whyus said, Carson loves hitting him on a screen and getting his huge body in the open field. He’s a red zone target but not really the primary one. If he stays healthy, look for him in pro bowls down the road.
3) Love him. He’s a tough little guy and he fears no one over the middle, so he can be compared to Welker in some ways. I’m a little bit worried about him coming off a concussion the week before last but I’m confident that it won’t make him back down. Of course, it will be interesting to see if the coaches immediately put him back in his role (starting slot receiver, primary 3rd down target) or if they ease him back into the offense. It worries me that he got a concussion so early because a couple of those can mess you up badly (see: Ben Utecht, a former Bengals TE whose career was ended after his fifth) but if he stays healthy he can have a Welker-like career. I consider picking him up in the third round one of our best draft picks in a while.
Win a ring without the king! Cavs=2011 champs?
I would say that
Shipley is a better option that Ochocinco at this point. I mean, Ocho will draw the double teams and Shipley won’t, but if I need a first down or TD right now, i’d go to Shipley before Ocho.

We can’t beat them just because we’re familiar with them. They’re also familiar with us, so wouldn’t that give both teams success?

Ummm, we also play tough, the NFC north all the time too.
To bad we aren’t playing those teams this year.
It's because of the brand of football in the AFC North.
The Bengals are good at pounding the ball and controlling the clock, which is what every team in the AFC North does. Last year the Bengals were just better at it.

Question: Has Ochocinco lost his sense of humor?
He sent our secondary Ochocinco T-shirts. That’s not really going to fire anyone up. He needs to hire writers or something to come up with better gags (like the Pepto and Deoderant baskets).
I'm pretty sure he's sending a warning to your secondary that he's pissed.
It’s not Pepto or Deodorant but it’s still kinda hilarious. I think his leash is shorter now so he can’t go all-out (the twitter war has yet to start for him, which is odd at this point in time).
Honestly, this does have me a bit perturbed, Chad’s not his usual trash-talking self at all. I wonder what made him so respectful this season in the first place.

I think he should've sent us a beautiful rose
With a simple note: “Dig up a spot and plant this on the road.” As the players and coaches gathered, marveling as 2pac once did over the thought of a rose growing in concrete, beauty existing in a bleak modern world, Ocho would dart out of the bushes with a flamethrower and set that shit on fire.
Beats the hell out of t-shirts.

Haha, t-shirts or lighting roses in concrete on fire and alluding the flower to the Falcons' secondary...
Latter is definitely more awesome.
Still, t-shirts aren't funny.
How about bbq marinade because he’s going to slow roast them? Or Aloe, because they’re going to get burned repeatedly. Or toasters. Or sombreros. Or signed glossies of him and TO, wishing them hugs and kisses. Or Bobby Petrino’s severed head in a wicker basket signed by Mike Zimmer. Any of these would be entirely more funny than t-shirts.

Who is the DE that's going to be beating Sam Baker repeatedly?
I’ve looked at several depth charts, and they’re all different… The Bengals official team site says Frostee Rucker at RDE – is that the name I’m going to be hearing all day Sunday?
Also, Roddy White vs Leon Hall – who wins? Or, 7 Catches for 90 Yards (Roddy’s average so far) – over/under?
"Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital." - Aaron Levenstein
Under.
I hope, really do. Hall’s a great corner and that may both inspire Ryan to throw away from him or let Hall take advantage of his cockiness. Problem is, Joseph looks like he’s unlikely to play, so expect Morgan Trent to be the nickel corner, a bit of an exploitable weakness.
And I wish I could give you a solid answer for our DE situation. It’s terrible at the moment. Odom’s a bust, Geathers is only good in run support, Rucker’s always injured, Fanene’s coming off a hammy injury, and Dunlap never sees the field. Then there’s Michael Johnson, but I’m not sure what to define him as.
Knowing our coaches, the starters will be Fanene and Geathers. Fanene isn’t the greatest in pass rush, but he’s solid, which is miles better than the rest of what we have. You’ll probably see a lot of Rucker as well. I want a big game from this line, and I doubt I’ll get it.
by Doc Scratch on Oct 22, 2010 11:33 AM EDT up reply actions
RE: Fanene
Fanene was our best pass rusher last year (other than odom)….so i wouldn’t say he isn’t the greatest, but maybe he is our greatest, which isn’t that great….here’s to hoping the SEC rookies on our D-line show up this weekend. (Los and Geno)
Our D-line is awful.
I doubt we’ll get many sacks this weekend or this year in general. Luckiily, we’re getting Fanene back and even though he doesn’t have the greatest talent in the world he’s a hard worker and can come up with some sacks.
I think Leon will beat White out. He’s one of the top corners in the league and he’ll be ready to prove it.
One thing about that… expect to see Jonathan Joseph on White as well, if he plays (he’s listed as questionable.) I’m not sure how much you know about him, but the argument can be made that he’s actually our best corner and not Leon.
Win a ring without the king! Cavs=2011 champs?
Sounds like..
You guys are really going to concentrate on Roddy. Hall’s a beast, that’s for sure. I’ve seen Joseph play as well, he’s good too. No doubt you guys have fine corners… I think that we’ll be giving you guys heavy doses of Turner and Snelling, to be honest. It’s going to be one of those type of games..
Let them.
Honestly, I think that’s what Zim’s trying to do—let them try to run down our throats. That was our talent last year and other than the Patriots game, we’re not terrible at it this year either. We can contain that running game if that’s what we need to do, just ask Stewart and Williams how successful they were against us.
