Statement Game??

In the grand scheme of the season, I'm sure this week's game against the Eagles won't feel as significant as it does today, but for numerous reasons I sense that we have arrived once again at the vaunted Falcons statement game.

Disagree? My thought process after the jump:

1) R-E-S-P-E-K-T Another season, another busload of Falcons doubters. Collinsworth and Simms went against us on Inside the NFL last night (Sapp held us down). Peter King picked against us AGAIN. I think Simmons will go with us tomorrow since he is in early on the bandwagon but seriously?

2) E-A-G-L-E-S, Eagles! Gotta admit. I just want that Eagles gorilla off of our backs for once. Still have nightmares about that 2005 NFC Championship Game. I have a lot of friends who are Eagles fans (not to mention my wife but it's a bonus if she even knows who they are playing each week) and they still joyously refer to "the Crumpling". And the fact is that we're better than them this year but they continue to get undue deference due to their reputation.

3) Momentum Don't look now but if we can pull this one out on the road we have Bengals, bye, Bucs at home over the next three weeks. I count those as wins and we could be relatively healthy and frickin 7-1 heading into a huge Thursday Night game against the Ravens. If you had told me that in the pre-season I would have tried to sell you some Braves NLCS tickets while we were at it.

4) MV7 Last but not least. My brain says I hope he doesn't play but my heart wants him to bring it. I am not an MV7 hater, in fact I was one of his most ardent defenders during his Falcons heyday. However, his unfulfilled potential, the sheer stupidity of his repeated mistakes leading up to his departure and his subsequent comments that made it seem like he felt "wronged" soured me on his Falcons tenure a teensy bit. And the stunt Andy Reid pulled last year was pretty deplorable. I wish him well, but not when he's playing my Birds. So hopefully Matty Ice can lay the smackdown this week.

What say ye Falcons fans? You buying?
