Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Greetings from BGN

Hello Falcons fans. I am Imp, a regular over at the Eagles blog Bleeding Green Nation. With next Sunday feature a game between Falcons and Eagles, I will answer any questions you may have about the Philadelphia Eagles.

Because I am sure you guys will ask about this, a couple quick points about Michael Vick - he is the starter if he is healthy enough and mostly likely the Eagles will say whether or not Vick can go on Wednesday or Thursday.

Tell us about your receivers

I fear Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson. How would you stop them, if you were the Falcons?

Double cover

The redskins did very well keeping the ball out of the hands of Jackson and Maclin by making it hard for Kolb to throw to them. Also the eagles held Santana Moss to 0 receiving yards…due to double covering.

Double cover the two of them, run a Cover-2, and make sure there are a couple of safeties playing deep. That was the defensive gameplan for the Redskins a week ago and they manage to cover Jackson and Maclin well – they had a combined 4 catches for 34 yards.

Also, put pressure on Kolb/Vick and make them check down. Best way of getting rid of a receiver is making the QB have a bad day.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

How do you think the Eagles will utilize McCoy against the Falcons?

LeSean McCoy is one of my favorite players because of his versatility.

If the Falcons game plan to keep McCoy out of the passing game, do you think he can handle the load of running between the tackles for 4 quarters?

And if you could, tell us about your other options at RB. I don’t know of anyone past McCoy.

Same way they has been utilizing McCoy all season long: some screen passes, couple of delay routes toward middle of the field, and give him about 15-20 carries in the game.

Yes he can. McCoy is averaging 5.4 yards per carries. That is also with an offensive line that been inconsistence, at best, at run blocking. Of course, if McCoy get shut down in passing game, Andy Reid will probably turn to more passing plays before giving McCoy some extra carries.

Other option at running back? Number two back is Mike Bell, he was a Saints last couple of years. How good is he? Well, if you guys want him, all I’m asking for is a pack of gum. Third back is Eldra Buckley, bad runner but good special teams guy. The fourth guy is Joique Bell, an undrafted rookie that Eagles sign off of Bills’ practice squad a week or two ago. He has yet to get a carry as an Eagle.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

screen passes

have been the only kink in our defense so far. we need to lock down hard on mccoy from the beginning.

What have been the defensive tendencies of the Eagles this season under Sean McDermott?

I know you guys used to love the blitz, is that still the gameplan?

Also, how did Kolb play last weekend? Is he a legitimate threat or a liability?

"That's my teammate, man... That's my quarterback"

by TurnerTheBurner on Oct 11, 2010 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Still like to blitz, but McDermott is trying to outsmart himself. He likes sending Trent Cole or Brandon Graham, couple of ends, out to play zone/cover receivers. Stupidity alert. So yeah, if you see Cole on Roddy White, thank McDermott.

He played good. Did everything he was asked to do, and more. 68 completion percentage, 8.2 YPA, 250 yards, TD. He isn’t a liability.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Here at the Falcoholic, we sympathize with you.

Our DC likes to do that, too, much to the chagrin of the readers/fans here.

Why a DE should try to do anything except maul the QB is beyond me, especially when it’s your best defensive player. >.<

Yeah sounds like Brian Van Gorder, but...

last year. He’s learned a little , we don’t do it so much this season, cuz it doesn’t work very well.

What the hell is wrong with King Dunlap?

Will the Falcons abuse him? Will he be replaced?

What’s wrong with Dunlap? Uh…he sucks. Badly. No effort, no work ethics, nada. Will he be abused? Assuming Peters can go, YES. I can abuse him and I’m 140 pounds. He NEEDS to be replaced. I’d rather have Austin Howard, an undrafted rookie tackle, over Dunlap.

The Vick chances

I know that it takes a while to heal up from a rib injury.I’m wondering if it might be better for you to keep Vick out for this week seeing that the Falcons are not in your division and saving him for the Cowgirls. What do you think?I mean I know that the Falcons are a rival sort of but setting ego’s aside what would be better for the team.Besides Kolb looked pretty good to me.

by JT131 on Oct 11, 2010 6:08 PM EDT reply actions

Eagles don’t play the Cowboys until December. That is a long time resting for one team. That said, he probably shouldn’t play this week and make sure the ribs heal fully.

That, and I want to see if Kolb can put back-to-back good starts, with him being the Eagles’ future QB and all.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

How does the loss of Brodrick Bunkley affect your defense?

Who steps in and fills the viod?

Watching Bobby Cox pick boogers since 1995

by a hooter's baby on Oct 11, 2010 6:28 PM EDT reply actions

It hurt the Eagles’ run D, which is Brodrick Bunkley’s main strength. And the run D hasn’t always been pretty this year.

Probably Trevor Laws fills the void. He guy Eagles fan has been roasting up until training camp this year and now finally gets his chance to prove he was worth picking before DeSean Jackson.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

Trevor Laws as Imp said.

But he is just now starting to show that he might have been worth the pick
He had a good game at SF and he had a good camp

Laws is a better pass rusher at this point then Bunk was.

Bunk did a fantastic job at plugging up running lanes. (well recently he hasnt) and opening spots for our LBs or safetys to get into the pocket.
Laws will pressure the QB better. The last play in the San Fran game he broke through the line and hit Smith when he threw causing the INT. He isnt so great in the run game so we will most likely rotate in Owens and Dixon both of whom are fairly stout in the run game. they managed to hold Gore to 52 yards so Im confident that we should be able to at least slow down Turner especially because from what ive seen running up the middle is something your team struggles with. I could be wrong though.

A couple of questions

How are the Eagles looking to contain Turner and Snelling? These guys can run the ball all day right through the tackles so does Philly have the front 7 needed to keep them off their game?

And how do you think the lack of consistency in QB starts is affecting the team? One of the things I’ve been wondering about your team is the idea that Kolb is the future, but Vick is the starter even after the trade. At what point is Kolb going to be the starter if Vick keeps up doing what he’s been doing?

by ErrantFalcon on Oct 12, 2010 2:58 AM EDT reply actions

Don’t know anything specific about what Eagles are going to do, besides call some run blitzes. Yes, they have a solid front 7 that can stop the run, but they played so inconsistent in the season that I don’t know if Falcons are going to have 50 rushing yards or 150 rushing yards.

Nothing negative really. Kolb starts off slow, lose his job to Vick after a concussion, Vick plays good, Vick gets injured, Kolb almost brought Eagles to a win, then have a good game against 49ers. And there isn’t anything in the lockerroom that suggest a rift, I mean, Vick and Kolb has been friends before and after Vick starting. They were chatting it up all day long during the Jaguars game.

Kolb is more than likely the starter next season. Both has good games so far in the season, while Kolb is sign through 2011 and Vick’s contract is up after this season.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

To expand on that Kolb was the most vocal in cheering for Vick during that first start

Is he really ready to BE THE MAN!? From what I see he CAN play the game, but , how do I say this…Hasn’t developed his mojo??

WR Production w/ Kolb

It looks like Desean Jackson (and to a lesser extent – Maclin’s) production drops with Kolb in the lineup instead of Vick.

Do you think he has a tendency to checkdown too quickly to Celek and McCoy?

Does he have the ability to throw the deep ball consistently? Must admit I would much rather see Kolb than Vick Sunday.

by gametheory7 on Oct 12, 2010 12:23 PM EDT reply actions

During the Redskins game, yes. Kolb was doing nothing but checking down. Granted, receivers were covered pretty well, but Kolb failed to attempt a deep pass. After that, though, Kolb wasn’t checking down too quickly during the 49ers. Only time he checked down was when no one was open or his o-line collapsed and was about to get killed.

No. Biggest thing that people harp on Kolb is his arm strength, mostly because he can’t throw it past 40 yards down the field. So far, Kolb hasn’t been hitting deep passes consistently.

RIP Jim Johnson, best ever.

How does the Philly fanbase view Atlanta?

A lot of Falcons fans still harbor resentment or disdain for Vick that carries over to his new team; some are bitter about last years loss, the only game where we got truly blown out; and some just feel a rivalry with other bird teams. Does recent history give the ATL matchup any special significance for Eagles fans, or are the Falcons just another team?

by ArthurDank on Oct 12, 2010 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

Just another team.

Generally, it’s 1.A and 1.B with Cowboys and Giants that Eagles fan hate the most, then the Redskins since they’re in the division and they always play the Eagles tough. After that, no other team really sticks out that Eagles fan, in general, hate.

I hope vick does play. I want to see our D punish him. If corn cob plays that is okay too. I think we can handle it. It might be a close game, but I still think we win it. I am a homer so I have to say that.

I said this in another thread

I think Kolb will start regardless
Vick may only play if Kolb become ineffective to our defense (I totally doubt it, but plausible), or becomes injured and the third string QB can’t yet play, or if Reid wants to get crazy creative.
Of course Vick will want to play.
He may have a chance to play against us in the playoffs…possibly in Atlanta
