Falcons sign players to Futures Contracts
DJ Shockley and 7 others have been signed to "futures contracts", and will be competing for roster spots next year. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the season ended are eligible for such signings.

Sweet news. One question though
What exactly is a “futures contract”?
Is it essentially a thing that says “You have a chance to make the team next year”?
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
If I understand it right
It just means that this “year”, in NFL terms (for Free Agency, etc) doesn’t end until March. So a futures contract is for street FA’s and guys on our (or other team’s) practice squad that would go into effect for next season.
I can’t find a link to anything other than team sites announcing their signings, but here’s the general definition given in these articles:
Reserve/futures contracts are contracts that are signed for the 2010 season, even though the upcoming season does not officially begin until March. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the 2009 season ended are eligible for reserve/futures contracts. If they were under contract, then they would remain so until March. Players who were on NFL practice squads at the end of the 2009 season were eligible to sign with any team.
