Got a Question for a Phins Fan?

I know how it is. The whole week coming up to the game you endlessly plot all different possible matchups. You constantly question if certain players can step up and do certain things. Like can M.Turner convert on that 4th and one, or can Ted Ginn make that catch in the endzone. As you do your browsing during the day on the Dolphins vs Falcons game (cmon who actually does work during the football season?!) you may come across a player, a scheme that we run, or just a general inquiry.

And thats what I, Finsxfactor, am here for =)

To answer all your questions

Good Luck guys.

Thanks for coming over!

Who the hell is your second receiver? I personally like Brian Hartline, but it sounds like Greg Camarillo and Davone Bess might get more reps there than he will. Can you clear that up?

Well, according to the official depth chart on the Phins website,

Bess is listed as the starting 2nd receiver, with Hartline listed as a backup for Ginn. From what we’ve been hearing, it sounds like the 2nd receiver is going to be rotating more than just a standard 2nd. So it will be some combination of Bess, Camarillo, and possibly hartline and Patrick Turner.

Well heres the thing, the dolphins don't have clear cut 2-5.

But Bess is listed as starting along with Ted Ginn. But Bess usually works out of the slot. So if the question is who is our number 2 behind Ginn it’s Bess. But if your question is who is going to work on the outside with ginn, it will most likely be Hartline.

Well...

I guess since you may have a tonne of questions about how the hell we went from 4-12 to 11-5, I have a question. How did you guys go from 1-15 to 11-5? Was it the wildcat? A renewed Ricky Williams/Ronnie Brown attack?

Id say alot of it was like yall

Incredible coaching, discipline on the field, teams underestimating us, and so forth. We also benefited from an “easier” schedule. By no means did we not deserve what we got last year (AFCE Championship) we just simply beat the teams that we were obviously better than.

And yes the wildcat worked very well. But honestly it turned out to be less than 10% of our total offense…which is why its stupid that all these so called “analysts” keep using it as a reason why we’ll be average this year (meaning teams are prepared for it)

It wasn't just a single thing. It was a collection of things - Four in particular

1st and foremost, great coaching and management. After a 1-15 season many players would just mail it in and coaches would be satisfied with winning only 3-4 games the following year. But not sparano or parcells or ireland. They dedicated their lives through the off-season gathering the “right” players. They made the tough moves (cutting Zach Thomas and trading Jason Taylor) but overall they assembled a team with talent and the ability to win

2nd has to be a stable qb. I am a believer that a guy like John Beck or Chad Henne could have mirrored Pennington’s success but there is no denying the results. He played consistent football. Sure he has a noodle arm and wont win superbowls but we werent contending last year. He helped the progression of young recievers (Ginn, Bess, Camarillo, Fasano). He minimized his errors and made plays down the field. He’s no Matt Ryan, but he was good enough.

3rd. Takeaway-Turnover. Dolphins last year had the second best (if i recall correctly) takeawy to turnover ratio. If you can protect the ball and make plays on defense, then you will be in a lot of games.

4th. May seem obvious. But every player making plays when you need it the most. It seemed like every game last year, a new player made a big play. One week it would be Ronnie Brown, the next TE Anthony Fasano, Camarillo, Ted Ginn, Patrick Cobbs, the list can go on and on. This is where the WildCat comes into play. The better we can catch the defense off guard and utilize the talent we have, the better off we are.

Pat White

How much time will he get with the ball? I always thought he was good at WV, but was too small for the NFL.

by Chaos7 on Sep 9, 2009 8:35 AM EDT reply actions

Honestly we dont know

The wildcat only showed several times this preseason and it was plays weve already seen. He played as a QB and he’s a tremendous athlete, but needs alot of mechanical work. Thats all we know

Just like Enhalen said, right now he needs work.

He has all the talent in the world, but right now the coaching staff seems to be focused on getting him up to par as a passer than worrying about the WildPat, Whitecat, or w/e you want to call it.

That being said, I wouldnt be surprised if we see White out there just to create mismatches. He’s a dynamic player, small – maybe, but he sure is fast and he can definetly throw.

I'm not worried about Turner converting in 4th and 1

but I’m curious… Do you think the Fins have what it takes to stop a 4th and 1 play?

How about those short 3rd and goal situations with Tony Gonzalez. Do the Dolphins have the personel to prevent matchup problems? If so, what are they?

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

by MentallyMIA on Sep 9, 2009 9:42 AM EDT reply actions

Yes I think we do

Ferguson is beast and our ends are no slouches. Plus say what you will about our OLB’s and not being very good against the run, its Taylor and Porter were talking about here. Youd be hard pressed to find two other lb’s who can read offenses and have as good of instincts as these guys.

As far as matching with Gonzalez, thats what the 3-4 is for. We have big and very physical lb’s with speed who can match with Gonzalez. Wether or not they CAN control him remains to be seen, but the potential is definitely there.

Last year we were surprising stout against the run, and I expect things to get even better.

With the development of guys like Merling, Langford, Solia, Crowder, we have a very agressive defense. So when it comes down to that 4th and 1 game defining play…we’ll see..

and btw i dont think any team can cover Tony Gonzalez once he smells the endzone. That being said, We have a better secondary than last year, our line backers are surprising good against the pass, so It’ll be an interesting matchup to watch.

Henne vs White

Who do you like better? Also, will this be Pennington’s last year with Miami as a starter…?

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Henne hands down and most of us feel that way

Henne had a shaky few games in the preseason but look great in the last one. He has all the tools you want, as in footwork and a cannon for an arm, he just needs to continue developing.

And yeah apparently Penny is in his last year as a starter but who know whatll happen. If he lights it up again and Henne looks so so, we might go qb in the draft next year. But as far as white taking over the starting job, not gonna happen

I like John Beck better!

Lol. I personnaly feel both can be good, but at different things. Obviously White is the scrambling type of get out of the pocket passer, while Henne is the traditional pocket passer.

I think Henne should start right away. More time with pennington = progress stopping.

Hopefully this will be pennington’s last

concerning pennington

he’s won the comeback player of the year twice and to my knowledge has never put 2 good years back to back. Do you see him doing it this year or reverting back to the old Chad?

by gritzblitz on Sep 9, 2009 12:42 PM EDT reply actions

The sooner chad is gone (pennington) the better.

I dont know what we’ll get out of pennington but I’m hoping he does what he does best.

I just noticed on the Atlanta Falcons weekly press release

that the Dolphins were +17 on turnovers last season… is this number accurate?
If so, that’s insane and congratulations.

Do you think your team’s success is built around it’s lack of mistakes? Is it going to be able to continue to have so few mistakes with a much more difficult schedule this season? Without your defense accumulating all those turnovers, do you think the Dolphins offense would have been able to be so successful?

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

by MentallyMIA on Sep 9, 2009 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Yes, that number is accurate.

Over the resular season last year, Pennington threw a total of 7 interceptions and our defense had 18 interceptions. I’m not sure what the fumble ratio was, I don’t have it in front of me and the website is blocked for me here at work.

That is definitely one of the big pillars the team is built around, not turning the ball over. It ties in with the strengths of Pennington. He may not have the arm strength of other QB’s, but he is extremely accurate on his throws, even if they are short to mid range. It definitely is part of the gameplan to win the battle of turnovers and keep the other teams offense off the field as much as possible.

I honestly don’t know how the turnovers are going to go this year. I will go ahead and say that it will probably be a similarly small number of turnovers by the Phins this year. With the exception of Hartline, Turner, Nalbone, and Haynos, the offense is for the most part the same as it was last season. And those guys did not turn the ball over very much at all. But we will have to see, we faced a good number of teams with weaker defenses last year and the Ds this year are improved. But having few turnovers is something that Coach Sparano is definitely driving into this team.
