A Very Falcoholic Discussion: The Bye Week Focus
It's clear that this teams needs a little work. Maybe it's in the form of fine-tuning their positioning on plays, or perhaps it's replacing their limbs with steam-powered robotic parts. Either way, it's clear something needs to be done.
Because that's a fact, you might as well discuss what it is the Falcons should do to get ready for the Niners two weekends from now. It's a good way to brainstorm our way through a weekend of troubles and into a brighter tomorrow. You should probably even start right now. Now, I say!

They're gonna rush, and rush a lot.
Therefore, we need to work on our rush D, especially considering how NE ran all over us last weekend.

The good news
is that I think we will miss Frank Gore and his awsomeness. But then again Fred Talyor is no Frank Gore and Glen Coffee has looked decent.
In Dimitroff we trust
I'm not sure what to make of Coffee
He didn’t do very well against the Vikings, but he looked fantastic in pre-season and he’s got a lot of power. Hopefully we’re able to shut him down.

I don't think anyone would confuse our defense for the Vikings
However with 2 weeks to prepare for the 49ers I believe Smitty will be able to make the necassary adjustments to come out of SanFran with a W.
In Dimitroff we trust
I would make SF beat us through the air.
Their QB isn’t good enough to beat us by himself. Take away the run game and we should be fine.
I thought our DBs performed well, all things considered, but ...
DeCoud should have picked Brady twice. I hope they work on taking advantage of those opportunities.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

I think we're getting a little ahead ourselves
We need to stay focused on our next opponent, the Byes. I don’t know where they’re from, but apparently they’re good since every team in the league plays them at least once. Also I’ve never heard of anyone winning against Bye, so that can’t be good.

But have you ever heard about a team losing to them, either?
Apparently, every game ends in a tie. Where is their stadium? I…I don’t know.

I think I know.
They live in a town called Hello and their stadium is “Howyadoin S-today-dium”
Their mascot is a Bye named Good and they’re so deep they play several teams a week. Sounds like a championship caliber team, to me.
Excellent thread
Offense – get back to what worked for the Flacons last year. Hit White on deeper passes to extend the defense, slot Jenkinks, use Gonzo in the 7 to 15 yard range and run the Burner!! White’s yards per catch average has him catching balls way to close to the line of scrimage. Drop Jenkins deep a few times to keep the opposing defense guessing. Run a screen with Turner or Gonzo every once in a while.
Defense – get a pass rush from somewhere. Either as a linebacker or safety blitz. Hill for SF can be rattled and is still young. Pin some ears back and go after him. Assign a LB to shadow Gore or whomever the RB is. If necessary back up the LB with a SS. Make Hill win the game.
Gore'll be out, thankfully
So that’s one less worry for us.

props
to our pass defense last week. brian williams and thomas decoud showed up. also curtis lofton proved that he is incredibly reliable this week. most important thing we need to work on for next week is run D. in general however, we need to get our offense on track. our defense tried to keep up with the pats, but our offense just didnt show up.
Here's a Concern...
Mr. Dmitrov has shown himelf a genius when it comes to building an offense, but the defensive line and secondary have deteriorated more each of the two years he’s been choosing player personnel. Do you think he notices that?
—AOB
How many more days, Lord, must I walk throught the wilderness?
GO FALCONS!!!
That's a fair concern
I think the focus has been on getting younger fast, and to some degree that’s resulted in us getting talent (see Curtis Lofton and Thomas DeCoud). On the other hand, it’s not looking like we’ve taken any kind of significant step forward this year.

Since Comrade has been choosing our player personnel…
—He transformed an offense in one year, and still got Lofton in the second round. Can’t expect too much out of him as far as defense is concerned with that kind of offensive turnaround. In the same draft, he got Biermann in the fifth round. Not a bad pick, huh?
—This year, drafted Jerry and Moore, and they are injured. Yes, both are injury prone, but were both seen as good picks, and the jury is still out on them, as they haven’t been able to stay on the field.
—Drafted Sidbury late, thought to be one of biggest steals in draft.
—Let go of Brooking, replaced him with Peterson. Good upgrade.
—Last year traded a seventh rounder for Foxworth. Even though he was a one year rental, I’d say that was a steal. This year, signed Brian Williams, and immediate upgrade at corner.
BOTTOM LINE:
—In 2007, the Falcons gave up 25.9 points per game. Last year, they gave up 20.3 per game, and so far 17.7 this year.
I’d say any improvement at all on defense is great, considering how far we’ve come on offense. Let’s not get greedy, we’re still only two years away from… you know, Petrino, dogfights, and all that nonsense. We’re 13-6 under Comrade’s reign, and I won’t doubt him until he gives me good reason. Losing in Foxboro is not something to get too worried about.

We need to get back to playing disciplined on Defense
Smitty alluded to missed assignments in some of his post-game quotes. Against Miami, our defenders were playing aggressively, but they were also staying in control, respecting their assignments. As a result, they were in the right place at the right time more often than not and they shut down what is actually a pretty good run game. We haven’t seen that same kind of play the past couple of weeks. This bye week should give our defense a chance to get back to the basics.
Offensively, we’ve got to win the battle at the point of attack in the run game. We’ve done a great job protecting Ryan on passing plays, but the holes are not opening up or are closing too quickly. I don’t think the issues running the ball are a result of Turner. I think it’s that we’re doing a great job in pass protection and not doing the same in the run game.
Simply put, we’ve gotta start doing what we’ve philosophically sought to do all along. Run the ball. Stop the run.
Well, the argument against it not being on Turner...
Is that we’ve got the same O-line as last year, for the most part. They’ve done a brilliant job protecting Matty Ice, but the run game just hasn’t been the same. Turner’s looked a little slow to me, but again the holes haven’t always been there either.
However, in my opinion, the jury remains out until Norwood is healthy. I think his injury played a bigger part in the NE loss than most realize.
Hi guys. I'm here spying for the 9ers.
I think there are some mistaken assumptions about how the 9ers play prevalent here. Allow me to explain what to expect from the 9ers with Gore out.
1. The 9ers defense continues to dominate good offenses. The base 3-4 is very good at shutting down the run and on passing downs they have a Dime package that is very good. ILB Patrick Willis will be focusing on M. Turner and OLBs Manny Lawson and Parys Haralson have gotten enough pressure on K. Warner, M. Hasselbeck, and B. Favre to put them all off their game. The basic 49ers defensive game plan is to be strong against the run, bang the WRs & TE at the LOS to take away the timing routes and make the QB go to his 3rd and 4th reads, which in turn gives the pass rushers more time to get to the QB. They have excellent depth at both CB & Safety and look for situations where they can play Dime and get everyone on the field. On the D-line, RDE J. Smith is a relentless penetrator, NT A. Franklin is just average, and LDE I. Sopoaga is coming into his own and can manhandle double teams (strongest guy on the team). RDE backup Ray McDonald comes in on 4-man fronts to play DT with J. Smith because they are both very quick penetrators. So don’t make the mistake of thinking it will be easy to either run or throw on the 9ers. They’re very good at taking away the easy things.
2. On offense, with Gore out, my GUESS is that the burden will be shifted to QB Shaun Hill, who has proved to be better than expected. Up until Favre’s final throw, Hill had outplayed him and had a better QB rating. Hill also has a QB rating of about 110 in the 4th quarter and has engineered 4th quarter scoring drives in every game so far. He has a weak arm, but makes few mental mistakes and does not rattle under pressure. He’s earned the chance to carry more of the load on his arm. Don’t underestimate him.
Unfortunately, the 9er’s OL is not playing well, with the LG and RT positions being a real liability. If you’re looking for a weakness in the offense, that’s the primary one. The other liability on offense is the extremely conservative play calling by OC Jimmy Raye. RB Glen Coffee is no Frank Gore, so expect to see a lot of M. Robinson, who is a backup RB, FB, QB, and outstanding ST player. They may try some Wildcat stuff when he’s in. At WR, I. Bruce can still get separation whenever he wants and Josh Morgan is an athletic speedster. TE Vernon Davis had two impressive TD catches this last game and appears to be emerging as a receiver – Hill has a good rapport with him. The 9ers haven’t used many 3-receiver sets and zero 4-WR sets, but I suspect they’ll use some more 3-sets without Gore. Otherwise, the standard set is FB, HB,TE, and 2 WRs probably 75% of the time.
3. On Special Teams, the 9ers have very solid kickers in punter Andy Lee and place kicker Joe Nedney – neither makes many mistakes. 40-year old Allan Rossum is the return man, but he’s off to a slow start this year.
What we see on your team is a strong, diversified offense with an outstanding RB in M. Turner, a top TE in T. Gonzales, a good young QB in Ryan, and a few “B” WRs. On defense, you have DE J. Abraham, DT J. Babineaux, and ILB C. Lofton but a very weak secondary and ordinary OLBs. Which is further argument for allowing Hill to attack the secondary with timing routes to back off the Safeties (we assume the Falcons will stack the line and blitz a lot), and then mix in the run enough to make play action work. TE Vernon Davis will be a major target over the middle on crossing and post patterns. WR J. Morgan will be the deep threat, I. Bruse will work the flats with outs and slants, and even FB M. Norris will get the call on screens. On running plays, look for more runs on the left side and flips to Coffee and Robinson.
That’s the way I see things right now, but this may change after we see what the 9ers do against the Lambs next Sunday at home. I’ll try to stop by again, but I think our main Niners Nation guy, Fooch, will be here to post an article and answer questions.

exactly about the defense
If I was a Defensive Coordinator, that’s exactly how I would call defensive plays, stack 6-9 in the box and stop the run, then jam the receivers at the line of scrimmage, maybe occasionally send the corner blitzing after the jam with a safety over the top.
by brotherbrown on Sep 29, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions
It'd be nice....but
The flats would be open all night long with that.
Tight ends would feast.
RB Screens would go 70 yards for touchdowns. Screens are designed to relieve pressure by literally opening the safety valve and letting all the pressure through, only to dump the ball off to the RB.
If you send a corner, that leaves one safety over the top for coverage, with the other safety playing either deep halves or just complete deep help. If a receiver splits the safeties, on…..say, a post route, it’s a touchdown on a well thrown ball. An LB MIGHT be able to cover a #2 receiver if he’s slower, but chances are that’s not going to happen.
Remember, if you send a DB on a blitz, that’s one less DB covering a receiver and the responsibility goes to either a LB or a Safety. I’m not hating, I just wish it was that easy. :P
After this past game...
how do you guys at falcoholic think you compare to the rest of the NFC South?
I have immense respect for Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, and to a lesser extent your whole offense. Your defense has young and talented play makers in Curtis Lofton and Chris Houston (am i wrong?), plus veteran strength from Mike Peterson. I see this coming down to the wire between the Falcons and the Saints…
What do you guys think?
The Easter Bunny is a savage...
Saints take the NFC South by at least one W.
They’re monstrous and could be on a long, long winning streak.

I don't disagree, but..
If someone doesn’t bring the Saints back down to earth, I know we probably won’t. They’re riding a high right now.
That being said, Buffalo went toe-to-toe with them for 3 quarters or so. If Buffalo wasn’t, well, Buffalo, who knows how that game could’ve gone. Thankfully, we’ve got a few weeks before we play the Saints.
Also, if we can keep it close, we get them in the Dome later on in the season, which could be a huge turning point in the race for the division. Just saying, I believe in the FO. We can win this division.
I tend to think we shouldn't be counted out just yet
Remember how rough that loss to Carolina on the road was last year with a rookie QB? Remember that rookie QB leading an improbable drive to kick a field goal about 5-6 weeks later to beat the Bears?
It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Saints look very good right now, but in the end they still have to win the games.
by LetsGoFalcons on Sep 30, 2009 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Oh yeah.
I almost cried when Elam hit that 50 yard FG to beat the Bears.
That was a 10 year veteran throw to Jenkins. I haven’t forgotten it. I think J.Mike over at af.com said that when Elam made the kick, it was the loudest the dome has been in several years.
Well,
TB and CAR have nearly eliminated themselves already. I wish we could play TB sooner, in case they start to figure things out later in the season. I’m glad there’s still a few weeks before we play the Saints, so they can hopefully cool off a bit. The Jets and Giants should be a tough test for you guys coming up. After the bye, Falcons go: @SF, vCHI, @DAL. We’ll know a lot more heading into the Week 7 Monday nighter… Bottom line – I think we’ll be fighting it out with the Saints until the last week or two of the season.
We're counting on our youngsters ...
…on defense to, at some point, become comfortable and start playing instead of thinking. Defensively, Tampa should be able to count on the same thing. Their offense really needs to improve and keep their defense off the field. So, yea, I wish we were playing them sooner, too. I hope you’re right about being able to keep up with the Saints!

I felt like he was talented...
His rookie season, he looked good, but he faded away in year 2. If he’s really on IR, what luck, eh?
Laurent caught a nice ball...
but I read somehwere the coaching staff weren’t his fans because he didn’t over-exert blocking downfield. Receivers don’t get yards after the catch without other receivers blocking for them.
He’s not as big a loss as Harry Douglas by any stretch.
