Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Atlanta Falcons @ New England Patriots Open Thread

This is a big one, guys.

We've talked the key points of this game to the brink of death, so we'll just jump right in to the important thing: The game itself. It's a winnable contest, but it's going to take nothing short of excellence from both sides of the balls. I don't doubt we can pull it off, even in the face of an unfavorable weather forecast.

I actually have the day off and will be joining you to chart the way through the game. Hope you'll take the time to stop by the site during the game!

Who? Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, 1 P.M. EST

Where? Gillette Stadium, Foxborough, Massachusetts

Weather? Good chance of heavy rain. Really good chance of passing being affected.

Injuries? Jerious Norwood is extremely unlikely to play. The Patriots' injury report is a minefield because you never know if they're bluffing, but Jerod Mayo and Wes Welker are unlikely to play, Randy Moss is unknown and a host of cornerbacks are questionable. This is actually a pretty banged up roster.

Odds? New England over Atlanta 4.5, O/U 46.5

Foe? You'll be wanting to visit Pats Pulpit, where the Patriots love flows like wine. Be sure to visit and comment, but please be polite.

GO FALCONS! Let's beat these Patriots with muskets!

Turner is going to run like hell today. We have got to outphysical them at both lines and set up play action with a strong running game. This is a big game today and if we can go 3-0 coming into our bye that would be huge because the saints are undoubtably going 3-0. As long as we can hold moss in check and put pressure on brady we should be in great shape. I’m still not convinced welker is really out but if he is that would be very significant.

This one is big!

I don’t know why, but I feel like if we win today we can win any Sunday (little scared of that Monday game.) Not that a loss today is the end of our run. Today is about making a statement that we didn’t just fluke all last season. Today we can become a legit contender in the national eye. And even though perception isn’t wins it would be nice to feel valid in believing we are Super Bowl bound.

Moss in, Welker out

http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playernews.aspx?sport=NFL

According to rotoworld Welker will be inactive for the game but Moss will play. Still with Moss’ mystery injury and the foul weather, I’m not sure if he’ll be as dangerous as he normally is.

by Leon07 on Sep 27, 2009 12:04 PM EDT reply actions

I see this as a good close game with injuries to Welker and Moss and the rain hurting Brady’s passing attack.

Falcons would to well to use Burner and Snelling a lot along with short tosses to TG and the wideouts.

I see a 31 – 27 Falcons win.

Does NFL.com no longer list inactives?

Last year they’d lump all the games & players together on the ‘fantasy’ page. Now it’s really spotty.

I use Rotoworld

They update very quickly prior to the games. Norwood also out.

Here's a list for all games

Inactives Week 3.

Cornerbacks Terrence Wheatley, Jonathan Wilhite, and Darius Butler all inactive for Pats (plus Welker and Mayo, of course). Steady dose of Safeties and Linebackers for Tony G.

Norwood, William Moore, and Tye Hill inactive (as expected). Plus, Trey Lewis active for the first time this year (also expected – Vance Walker inactive).

I normally don't criticize the refs.....

because they have a very difficult job and they don’t get enough credit for what they do, but holy heck. I can’t believe what I’ve been seeing. JA98 taps Brady and gets a call, but Ryan gets rode down by a 300 pound man and gets nothing. Then a NE receiver gets touched downfield and they get an illegal contact call. Come on, now. Some of this is complete garbage.

These Refs

Have no consistency. Last year, Turner had a knee down twice and they called fumble each time. This year, it’s down by contact.

Poor blocking on that one

Finneran just kinda weakly shoved him.

That was a namby pamby play call

And then Jenkins drops the pass. We’re dying out here.

It's a shame.

Nobody can beat the refs AND the pats.

That last call is a perfect example of how crooked this game is. It was determined that it was a side block? By who? The guy who threw the flag? Oh, I’m sorry, it was a side block, just kidding!

Garbage. Complete garbage.

We’ve been beating ourselves more than they’ve been beating us. We should be winning this game.

Bad calls from the refs, terrible play from our defense and the Patriots have been running well. Can’t knock the hustle.

I can't argue with the Pats running game.

They’ve been doing well in that aspect, and we haven’t stopped it. That being said, we should still be winning. They haven’t been overly impressive, themselves.

Pats dominate pretty thoroughly there, if that’s a yardstick.

Some drops (slick ball) and some bad luck have contributed as well.

Van Gorder's play calling is killing us

Our linebackers are 8-10 yards behind the line of scrimmage on obvious running plays and then we just vacate the middle on pass plays to give up the easy quick slant. WTF?

All my rosy thoughts through the first two weeks have been completely obliterated. Every single one of them. I’m sorry, but when a team like the Patriots makes as many mistakes as they have and we don’t do a single thing right after the second quarter, it’s a terrible, terrible sign. We have to be more aggressive against good teams. HAVE to.

I still don't understand Van Gorder's philosophy

Bend but don’t break only works if your offense can get you a health lead. Otherwise please put some damn pressure on a QB who has uncharacteristically struggled against the rush. We came out flat on D and stayed that way nearly the whole game. Even a rusty Tom Brady will eat you part if you just fall back and don’t have an aggressiveness at all.

This reminds me of the undefeated Pats season.

They had 3 or 4 games they should have lost, but they somehow managed to win them because the other team would fail in some aspect towards the end of the game.

We need something new on defense. The Jets CLEARLY showed us how to beat the Pats this week, and we act like we had no clue what to do all game.

It’s a shame, too. At least at this point we can go down fighting. I would personally go for it on 4th down even if I was on my own 20 at this stage in the game. If you get it, maybe you get some momentum. If you don’t get it, who cares, you at least threw a haymaker instead of quitting.

I believe...

In that long blog I wrote that I said a loss to the Pats would be healthy for us because they’re the Pats and we’re in their house.

I’m trying really hard to find a positive here.

Michael Jenkins has had a good game. Ryan played well, didn’t turn the ball over (as of when I quit watching)

Tony G was nowhere to be seen today. We will not win without getting him more involved.

Well, now our bye week is here, and based on how we just played, I’m glad it’s here.

We can turn this into a positive experience, still.

I have faith in the coaches, let’s embarrass SF in two weeks!

To sum up my thoughts from the game-

Van Gorder is stupid. I think we blitzed twice this game. What helped NYJ Win again? Oh yeah… BLITZING

Everybody got a bit… Emotional I guess… Made som bad plays.

Untimely, unfortunate, unlucky Drops/Fumble.We were downhill since we fumbled.

We need to incorporate Gonzo more even if hes quadruple teamed.

should have known….

They had a chance to beat a has-been team but the offense looked clueless when they managed to get the ball. This was ALL on the offense this time. (OK…mostly)

Typical Falcons Football

I have watched the Falcons play since the late 60’s and didn’t notice anything different from the game with the Patriots than what I have seen over the past 40 years. The Falcons have some very talented players and a fair coaching staff. They win some games and they lose others, they just don’t have the drive or the heart to be champions. I read online that they are the “Atlanta Braves of the NFL”. I mostly agree with that statement except that the Braves did win One World Series. If the coaching staff could be improved, maybe the Falcons would start doing things like going for it on 4th down situations, and passing slightly more than they run the ball. Until the Falcons start playing like champions, they will never be champions. If you aren’t willing to take chances, than you will never amount to much in the NFL of any other sport.
