Ask Baltimore Beatdown: Ravens Blogger

Hey, Falcons' fans, it's Baltimore Beatdown, home base for the Ravens blog on SB Nation. With our final pre-season game coming up in Atlanta, I thought I'd stop by to see if you had any questions from our point of view.

I realize this is a meaningless game to win for both teams, and the main battles will be for the few precious remaining roster spots on each team. However, we have a lot in common as we both are led by former first round draft picks from last year and both made the playoffs (even though only one of us made it to our Conference Championship Game!).

Wanna debate Matt Ryan vs. Joe Flacco? Any more obnoxious comments about our great inside linebacker Ray Lewis and his past troubles in Atlanta? Bring it on but keep it clean and try to keep it football related. I'll stop back between now and the game to answer your questions and reply to your comments. Feel free to stop by The Beatdown to join and leave your comments as well.

Good luck and let's both stay healthy through this Thursday's game. See you!

As usual, I’m advising that everyone follows my lead.

My question is about Ray Rice, one of my favorite non-Falcons for a variety of reasons. With a three-back committee, how will he do this year? Does he have the combination of pass-catching and running skills necessary to evoke memories of Maurice Jones-Drew, another smaller back who has done great things?

Great comparison for Rice

He is a small back, but put on another 10 pounds of muscle this off season and actually was an “between the tacdkles” guy at Rutgers. He will be the feature back of the three and will indeed be a three down back. He will lose goal line carries to LeRon McClain and might lose some more to Willis McGahee when we are wearing down defenses in the fourth quarter.

However, he is a solid kid with a bright future running and receiving, and is tough to bring down on initial contact.

I have a serious question because I picked him up as a REALLY late pick in one of my leagues...

…. after Ray Rice got drafted before him… assuming he remains healthy, is McGahee going to be your starting RB this season?

Also, about the preseason game, will Baltimore be starting their entire first string defense (I mean the week 1 and beyond crew)? If not, who will be sitting out?
I ask this because I would like to see our offense try their hand at one of the best defenses in the league at their full strength and so I’m really hoping this answer is a yes.

I can answer half of that

Rice is the starter.

As Dave says, Rice will start

but McGahee will get his share of carries. No one-back offense here in Baltimore, it’s stilla three-headed monster.

As far as the game Thursday, starters will be in for one or perhaps two series, but that’s it. We still need to fill a couple of roster spots and need to see what those guys can do or not. I expect pretty much the same from your Falcons.

What are the plans at WR?

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Most people, even those from Baltimore

list that as our biggest weakness. However, we are without a doubt a run-first offense and the receiving game is just a function of Flacco finding the open receiver. Too many teams will stack the box against us and Joe will find the open receiver in one-on-one coverage. As Coach Harbaugh said," whatever receiver JOe is throwing to will be happy."

A few questions

1) Is the defensive scheme going to be similar to past years with Rex Ryan gone to the Jets?

2) What is the feeling on the personnel changes on defense? Biggest loss – Bart Scott? Biggest addition – Domonique Foxworth?

3) Is Dawan Landry back 100% healthy?

Ok, I’ll quit for now.

A few answers

1. The defensive schemes are more dependent on Ray Lewis than any of the Ravens D-Doordinators over the years (Marvin Lewis, Mike Nolan, Rex Ryan). None of those guys have or will go on to head coaching success. As long as Ray, Ed Reed and others are there, we will be a smash mouth, talkative, demonstative defense and will back it up with success.
2. Bart Scott’s loss will be minlmal at best. Over the years, we’ve lost that last great Ravens LB such as Jamie Sharper, Edgerton Hartwell (you know him, ha!), Adalius Thomas, all who have gone on to mediocrity when they left the sahdow of Ray Lewis. The next Ravens linebacker you wil hear about is Tavares Gooden out of Ray’s U of Miami, who missed most of last year due to injury. Foxworht fits in great here, between the physical front seven and hard hitting safeties and paired with Fabian Washington might give us two of the faster corners in the league.
3. Landry is 100% and has actually lost weight and built muscle. See some earlier Training Camp posts on BaltimoreBeatdown.com to see how he looks like a safety in a linebacker’s body. He is ripped and will be a thumper back there.
Thanks for the good questions!

What are reasonable expectations for Joe Flacco?

Will he take a giant step forward, or a small step backward as defenses adjust?

Remember

that the biggest difference we Ravens fans preach about between Flacco and Ryan is that Matt was put into the gameplan to start for Atlanta from the get-go. Flacco was supposed to be 3rd string but injury and illness to both Kyle Boller and Troy Smith thrust Flacco into starting, but not until the 3rd pre-season game. Therefore, he had significantly less time to prepare to be the starter compared to Ryan.

Now he’s had the entire 2008 season (and post season) plus the entire off season and Training Camp to get ready for his sophomore year. His o-line will be better and he will make leaps and bounds of progress in my opinion.

Related question

To your answer.

Are you as confident as you seem the O-Line will be better? I thought that the O-Line last year was very good in Run Blocking and about average (maybe a little below average) in Pass Protection – obviously you watched them more, though. Plus, you’re starting a rookie at RT (although, a highly regarded rookie), and you traded out what I thought was a good young Center for a good aging Center (although that Superman curl is fantastic, so that counts for something). How has the O-Line performed this pre-season?

by orang3b on Sep 2, 2009 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

I firmly believe the o-line has moved into the upper echelon of the league

(like that “echelon” usage?)
With another year experience for the LT, LG and RG, plus a proven All Pro at center, who is used to playing against those hige DT’s in Minnesota (in practice) and Chicago, plus a rookie who is a beast of a kid at RT, this o-line will again open huge holes for our RB’s and be better at protecting a QB with a full year of experience now under his belt as well.

Yeah, yeah, yeah!

It’s all good, as everyone knows that Ray’s biggest crime was associating with some pretty bad dudes. Ray didn’t kill anyone, unlike OJ. In fact he pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, and had he not done so, he would have gotten off w/ nothing like the actual “killers” ended up doing.

Thanks for regurgitating this BS though! Oh by the way, we won the Super Bowl that year, remember?

Baltimore needs to trade for Marshall

they need a true 1st WR and Ray could keep his butt in line.

by gritzblitz on Sep 1, 2009 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

Ray has no desire to do that

and the way Marshall handled this situation, there’s no way I want that idiot on my team. Besides, we are and will be a run-first offense and do not need to spend so much money on a WR that would want a huge contract taking up way too much cap space. No thanks, I’ll pass on him, but I will take Anquan Boldin if you insist!
