Pre-Season Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons vs. San Diego Chargers

Turner_denis_poroy1_1__medium

via image.examiner.com

Look at Michael Turner running over those helpless people. Never has an image of men being crushed beneath the wheels of a mighty train amused me so.

We're back for the third week of pre-season games, this time against our hated disliked corpulent erstwhile foes in San Diego. The Chargers are a very good team and are likely to be the class of the AFC West this season, so this is a very good chance for us to see how we match up against an upper echelon squad. My guess: Pretty darn well.

And since there ain't no party like a Georgia Dome party, let's kick this off.

Who? Atlanta Falcons vs. San Diego Chargers, 8 p.m. EST

Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

Weather? Dome equipped with solid roof = no concerns about weather.

Fun Fact? Our very own Michael Turner once played second fiddle to LaDanian Tomlinson in San Diego. In turn, they signed Kynan Forney, who used to start for us at guard. No offense to Forney, but I think I'm happier with the guy we grabbed from San Diego.

Odds? Never tell me the odds!

Foe? Please check out Bolts From The Blue for all things Chargers, and visit the FanPost from our talented friend over there on this very site for any updates about the San Diego Powder Blues.

GO FALCONS! LET'S WRECK THE CHARGERS!

Game ready

I am really psyched for the season. I think we all know the keys to this season— Healthy Ryan=2nd consecutive winning season.

Let's Go Defense!!

Best test of the preseason for the starting D – lets prove to people that it was addition by subtraction (e.g. Brooking, Boley, Milloy).

i guess

they are trying to stretch the field but i’m not to keen on that 3rd down play.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. - Bill Shankly

Grimes

Here we go again…. I appreciate his heart but he is just too damn small to be our starting corner.

Grimes appreciates your small comment.

by Debilah on Aug 30, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What I would like to see

Is Grimes coming out the first week of the season, absolutely wrecking everyone on the field and saying afterwards that he played with a chip on his shoulder because people doubted him. And if that works, by the way, Jerious Norwood is too small to run in a 99 yard touchdown.

Well

Matty Ice is looking pretty good. I like the receiving options we’re seeing, as it appears so far that Gonzo has already started opening up more for us in the middle. Turner’s not getting as much running room as I’d have hoped, but with Sandy’s D, that’s not too surprising.

Is this the statement game from JAnderson? The guys were talking about it pre-game, what do you guys think?

by blackertai on Aug 29, 2009 8:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Anderson is definitely fighting for his role

if he performs well, he’ll see more snaps…

he continues to be sub-par, there are other options waiting for a shot

though I don’t think him being the starter is in jeopordy at this point

That would assume that he actually had something to say. Judging from the past two seasons I would tend to think he has a “speech” problem.

Wow

That was a hell of a catch. Massively overthrown and somehow Jackson still managed to get up there and bring it down in-bounds. Grimes didn’t have much of a chance.

Anyone else realize this is the (snicker) “great white hope” Jacob Hester, RB out of LSU? I didn’t think he’d actually been drafted to play RB in the NFL, but this appears he’s #3 on the Chargers DC. Interesting.

And if you watched him carefully

you’ll notice that he was directing a lot of attention towards his boy Peterson. Deservedly so. He should be the leader of this unit since he’s the veteran and the LB position is typically the position looked at as the captain of the defense. It’s what makes Ray Lewis so awesome, he’s the one blowing up on players if they blow a play. We need our own Ray Lewis.

Don't go toward the light!

Or the sharks!

My advice is not to worry too much. The front seven is better, the offense is dynamic, and they’re not going to let the secondary sit stagnant if they suck early this year.

If by better you mean teh rush D

Then yes, but we got zero pass rush all night long. That, in and of itself, led to much more pressure on the secondary. They are probably better than this, or at least let’s hope so, but they need to put in some serious fundamentals work.

again, Dave...

your commentary is coming from not suffering through the first half, lol.

He has put on quite a show, but he can only be in two places at once.

Two places at once

Would definitely appear to be an accurate statement when it comes to Lofton.

by gametheory7 on Aug 29, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'm sure that's true

But we also know that our defense is going to be far from perfect this year. If Grimes and Houston aren’t getting it done, let’s see more Chevis Jackson, Von Hutchins and Co.

Currrrrtttiiiissss!!

They should take snippets from that song Cam’ron made about Fiddy Cent and play that whenever Lofton makes a play. Awesome.

Brown and Snelling

Has anyone noticed that we don’t have a back who can catch the ball consistently? Jerious Norwood’s pretty good, but man, you’d like to see guys at the bottom of the roster with more versatility…

Turner had an amazing catch in the first half

like… he was getting folded over while the ball was headed in his direction…

but you are right, catching consistancy is definitely lacking in our RB corps.

There’s room for improvement, but there were some positives tonight. Gonna have to address that pass defense, though, or it’s gonna be a long year.
