Atlanta Falcons Discussion: Is The Sky The Limit?

Pretty short and sweet today, as old Dave the Falconer feels like stirring up some discussion. Yeehaw!

Basically, I want you to project the extreme upper limit of what the Falcons can reasonably do this year. If you think they can go 16-0, knock yourself out. If you think it's 12-4, say that too. My goal is to get you guys thinking about the team as a whole and individual players if they reach their absolute pinnacle, which at least one player is bound to do.

Personally, I think this team can go 13-3 at their very best, and I'll chime in with individual predictions as y'all take them up. Have some fun with this one, and good luck.

Full potential?

With our suspect secondary? 12-4. NE will have a field day with us if our secondary doesn’t improve, as will Philly. That’s two losses. The Giants may be too dynamic at RB for us to handle, even with our improved rush defense. And I expect us to lose to either the Saints or Panthers at least once.

Reality check prediction: 9-7

Our secondary just gets picked on all the time. Who gets the ball? Offense does, now when they don’t get a touchdown, do you complain about our offense not being able to stop the opposing teams defense? Give them a chance.

by Debilah on Aug 24, 2009 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Our secondary has two good players: Grimes, Houston

The rest, I have no clue. Really wish Moore was able to play…

Don't sell Coleman short...

He’s a very solid safety…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Or our depth...

Hard to say how good our top 2 corners will be, but having so much depth there could be huge.

by NeedATicketToTheGame on Aug 24, 2009 11:59 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

i dont think thats true… Chevis Jackson was redicilous in collage and he did really well last year, i think he should get the start over grimes. i think william moore is gonna be a monster in the backfield and i definetly wouldnt put eric coleman down he did really well last year.. I wouldnt say our secondary is bad, they are just young and fast.

It's all about perspective

Grimsey, Houston, Jackson, Owens … they are all NFLers, and deservedly so. But we lack that one dominant corner, that one guy that can match up with the elite receivers and not get burned on a regular basis.

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

by FrankyWren on Aug 24, 2009 3:21 PM EDT up reply actions

i think

there’s 2 maybe 3 “dominate” corners in the NFL. A shutdown corner is becoming a rare thing. I would love to have a guy who could shutdown a elite receiver but i’ll take a guy who can just limit the damage they do.

by gritzblitz on Aug 24, 2009 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

As the Raiders continually prove

It’s better to have three or more good corners than one elite one.

I would do backflips for 9-7

"There were far too many penalties on both sides of the football," said Coach Smith. "Some things that we'll have to address and I can assure you we will."

I could see 13-3

Only guaranteed losses I see are the Pats, Saints in NO on Monday Night (Have we ever won there on MNF??), and probably the Cowboys but God I hope not since two of my best buddies are Dallas fans. I could see us losing @Giants and maybe in week 17 @Bucs if we are resting our starters.

We should beat Philly as long as we don’t bring back Jennings to muff a punt.

Final Prediction barring injuries and unlucky bounces? Between 11-5 and 13-3

by FLA_Falcon on Aug 24, 2009 10:52 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

i think at the very least we will match last year’s record of 11-5 and we will probably need all 11 wins to make the playoffs again with so many teams around us improving…i do believe watching matt ryan and michael turner make defenses in the preseason look like 12 year olds is very, very nice to watch and gives all of us a small sense of security on those back-to-back winning seasons but as history will tell us, never assume because you know what happens when you assume…

by ATL Forever on Aug 24, 2009 10:56 AM EDT reply actions

Upper limit for Ryan and Turner

Ryan: 3,500 yards, 30 TDs, 10 INTs, 61% completion percentage.
Turner: 1,500 yards, 14 TDs

agreed

ryan’s touchdowns will be up because tony gonzalez and norwood will spell turner more so his yardage will be down but those are good predictions

by ATL Forever on Aug 24, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That would be very upper end, I think

But it’s definitely feasible.

My middle of the road, probably more accurate predictions would be:

Ryan: 3,000 yards, 22 TDs, 10 INTs, 58% completion percentage.
Turner: 1,200 yards, 9 TDs

Extremely Reasonable Prediction :)

Why, 16 and 0, of course.

If you want a modest prediction, I’ll go 11-5.

I see Matt Ryan throwing VERY few interceptions this year, and being sacked very infrequently as well.

I see the defense as being stronger than most anticipate. They are fast and will get better as the season progresses. Our d-line has depth, and I think they will be rotated a lot to keep them fresh. This will result in more sacks and pressures which will help our secondary out a lot. I feel great about or LB core, and our safeties. I am a little worried about our corners, but I think they’ll hold their ground and make a few nice plays in the progress.

What can I say – I’m a homer!

11-5

I can see the Falcons going 11-5, give or take a win. The offense is strong and our defense is improving. As long as Matt Ryan doesn’t regress and Michael Turner isn’t affected by the workload last year the offense should roll. The addition of Gonzalez will certainly help. The defense is suspect but you never know what could happen, they might (hopefully will) step up.

10-6 or 11-5

Just looking over the schedule, I see the possibility of the Falcons starting 5-5 and finishing up with a 6 game winning streak. The toughest part of the schedule is in the first 10 games, while the last 6 all seem pretty winnable. With the additional experience for the younger players, this scenario makes even more sense.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 24, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

Staying healthy and the tandem of Ryan to Gonzalez will be key. Gonzalez in the red zone could make for an incredible year. But I’d prefer we keep expectations low as the Falcons are still in a rebuilding process—-especially defense. I’d settle for 9-7 with a wildcard.

For 2010, I see Atlanta offense only getting stronger as we develop a couple more receivers and add debt to line. But again, we need to develop at least 3 Pro Bowlers off the Defensive unit. We have Abraham, but who else of the young guys will step up as an elite? Lofton? SIdbury? Owens? Moore? Their development is what will make watching the Falcons so interesting.

by Jon Cushman on Aug 24, 2009 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

Development is cool and all

But winning is what makes the Falcons interesting for me to watch. My sports teams have been in a bit of a slump lately (Noles, Braves, Falcons) and I can see the future beginning to brighten for the Falcons. I’m looking for a championship before Gonzalez retires

I don't understan why people think we're gonna lose to NE.

Their LBs are either old, or inexperienced. That’s not good for a defense that relies heavily on the LBs to make the plays. Our offense will move the ball on them like they do on us. It’s gonna be a last team with the ball kinda game to me…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

Our lack of coverage and a young QB

Peyton Manning, one of the top QBs in the NFL and probably the highest “Football IQ” in the league struggles with their blitz schemes and coverages. Their LBs have always been old. I think Matt Ryan will have his worst game of the year against them.

Needless to say Brady is…pretty good and our secondary is unproven, inexperienced, and not very deep. I think he picks us apart.

Turner will keep it close but if they have the lead late and we have to throw to win I don’t think it ends well for the Falcons.

I’m praying for them to prove me wrong, I just think this is our ugliest loss of the season.

by FLA_Falcon on Aug 24, 2009 12:17 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Against NE

The best game plan seems to be to run it down their throat. Most of their LBs are old, but they do have Adalius Thomas and 2nd year guy Mayo, who looks like the real deal. But, on defense, I don’t know that the Falcons have the pass rush to slow Brady down. The best approach there may be to drop 7 and every time Moss and Welker catch the ball, have two defenders hit them as hard as they can. That was pretty much Bill Belichek’s defensive game plan in the 91 SB against the Bills.

For ideas on statistical analyses, email me at wolfpacksteelersfan@gmail.com.

by WolfpackSteelersFan on Aug 24, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

the best gameplan, seems to be to BLITZ

the Giants won the Super Bowl that way.

The Chiefs broke Tom Brady that way.

The Bengals proved that was still an effective method to crush their offense.

If our front 4 can stay in Tom Brady’s face with the occasional use of an extra guy or two, we’ll win that game.

I’m not worried about our offense in that one.

That’s the question. I agree with you, but do the Falcons have the pass rushers to get to him? Sidbury and Abraham may turn into a respectable pass rush combo.

I like Sidbury a lot

but I forsee him moreso as Abraham’s replacement in a few years, and with the Patriots game only being week three I don’t think Sidbury will have developed enough to be consistantly effective. We’ll be depending on Jamal Anderson to either step up or Davis to step up as his efficient replacement.

Blitzing… does the weaknesses at the corners worry you with this kind of approach?

by Cammando2317 on Aug 27, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm always worried about our secondary

I often forget how to breathe when I see the ball go into the air.

However, I think Grimes has the speed and ability to cover Welker in man coverage and Houston should be able to hold his own with Randy Moss assuming Brady is getting pressured regularly.

I’m feeling pretty good about our LB corps this year… I know Nicholas is unproven but Lofton seems to be doing nothing but getting better and Peterson seems like he found a whole new reason to play football since coming to Atlanta. We could easily afford to send a LB with our front 4 at Tom Brady on a regular basis during that game and I think it will pay off.

I don’t think the game is going to end anything short of 30+ points for both teams… I just think the Falcons will be able to come out on top.

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

12-4

16 and 0 is technically possible. I’m calling 12-4 as the point where the bell curve goes flat on us though. The difference between losing and winning this year will be health.

by NeedATicketToTheGame on Aug 24, 2009 12:02 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

I think will go 12-4, besides losing to the pats im not really sure who else will actually lose to. possibly saints on mnf. but i dont se us losing to the giants or the cowboys, maybe philly but i really hope we beat them i dont want vick to have bragging rights. we could possibly lose to carolina in carolina, we always have a tough time there, and prolly the bucs at week 17, since we never really win in tampa and also bc its week 17 i dont think our starters will be playing.

by MTB33 on Aug 24, 2009 12:52 PM EDT reply actions

Talent wise

Theres not much difference between going 10-6 and 7-9 . No idea whether we win or lose those 4 swing games but realistically, I think we’ll fall in there somewhere in that range. Hows that for a vague prediction?

Wildly optimistic, we go 19-0 and tear down the goal posts in Miami next winter

Realistically?

I say we max out around 11 wins again this season. Not that I don’t think the team is better, but we’re just playing much better competition.

And, I’ll be thrilled by 11 wins. Really! Breaking the hex before Carolina would be a wonderful achievement, and point us onwards and upwards for the next couple of seasons with a more mature secondary and a good foundation for the Comrade to build off of in future drafts (more-so than having to devote any one draft to one side of the ball exclusively, again).

I’d rather us go 16-0, though :)

dome field hopes

Best case scenario, I think we could start off 6-0, but lose our divisional games on the road for 3 losses, and probably lose to an NFC east team on the road (NY). Maybe it doesn’t slice up exactly like that, but 12 wins is the loftiest we can go, and 10 seems more feasible.

For all the talk of our difficult schedule, I just have a feeling that our homefield advantage this year is going to be a real boost. When we score first I see our capacity to be an elite team in the league, and it immediately mitigates the pressure on our defense, as well as the strategy/style of our schemes.

Starting with MIA and CAR is tough, but at home I think we can start fast. NE will be mightily favored to take us out in Foxboro, which means that we could get overlooked and stun folks.
I don’t respect SF or DAL, even on their turf, bc our team is much more mature.
Hitting week 7 it gets tougher, but I just see our respite’s at home as real saving graces in this monstrous schedule (i.e. weeks 11-13)

Can anyone explain- we played CHI at home last season but what I’m looking at says they are coming to ATL again this year- is that correct?
I’d be scared to play them away.

the schedule rotation

To Dirtyburs, the reason atl face CHI at home again is because this season the NFC South is scheduled to host an NFC North team and visit an NFC West team based on standings in the division. Last year it was because ATL and CAR was scheduled to face Det and Chi at home anyways and MIN and GB on the road, and vice versa for NO and TB. In 2005 three years ago it was the exact opposite, The falcons and panthers visited detroit (thanksgiving game won 27-7 and chicago loss 16-3 on sunday night football on espn) and in 2011 it will repeat again as it did in 2005 and 2008 will repeat in 2014 (if the NFL decides to keep that rotation for 2010-2017). It’s why the Falcons will host the bears and visit the 49ers this season. All three teams finished in second place.

There's not a single game we DEFINITELY lose...

Therefore, the ceiling is 16-0.

Do I believe that will happen? Of course not, we’ll PROBABLY lose to the Giants, Pats and a couple division games. I’m calling a division-winning 10-6, but the ceiling is obviously perfection.

Exactly

We can beat anyone – we just need to play consistent, focused, and aggressively every single game. If we don’t make big mistakes, we are capable of beating anyone in the league.

Alternatively, if we aren’t consistent, focused, and aggressive, we can lose to any team in the league. Week in and week out, we have to have our game faces on.

by TomQ on Aug 25, 2009 9:10 AM EDT up reply actions

13-3

The only games I’m not reasonably confident in us being able to win are:
Pats – Week 3: Too Much Brady
Panthers – Week 9: It is written in the Falcons by-laws that we must split with Carolina
Giants – Week 10: Too Cold

If we get off to a 2-1 start through the tough stretch to start the season I’m sticking with my 12-4 call for the year.

by gametheory7 on Aug 24, 2009 9:42 PM EDT reply actions

I'm predicting 11-5

By looking at our schedule I think we go 5-3 thru the first 8 games and 6-2 thru the last 8 games, for an 11-5 total record, win the division one game ahead of the saints, host a first round playoff game against and NFC central team, win that game and go on the road against an NFC east team the second round and lose(maybe not?). But if our defense can get good we could make a run at the SB this year, but if not we WILL be in the SB next year for sure!!!
But man would I love to come out of NE after week 3 with a 3-0 record!! We could actually be viewed as the best team in the nfl if that were to happen!!

I was gonna do a seperate post but I have been sick and unmotivated

I saw the bucs live against the jags and their secondary looks horrible. Matt Ryan should have a field day. Their run D looked pretty good but I think we have a better offensive line than the Jags.

Their offense looked ok but nothing spectacular.

12-4

maybe i am the only one to think we can ….and will…beat the Patriots. Last year they had a putz of a schedule. This year they face the NFC South and the beginning of the end of their media hype. I think the patriots will be 9-7 at the end of season and the Falcons will be the media favorite when all is said and done.

I've been saying we can beat the Patriots from the start

I don’t think it is going to be a “given” win like both the Tampa Bay games should be, but I think we come away with the win. I have confidence that our pass rush has improved and we will get to Tom Brady, his proven weakness.

Our offense can do everything theirs can and we can keep the ball out of their offense’s hands via TOP.

11-5

everyone is picking on our secondary, what about our d-line, if we can’t get some to help john a. to get pressure on the quarterback, u can have the best secondary every put together and they still get burn, if the falcons can get pressure from the d-line, our secondary will make plays, i believe atlanta will win the south at 11-5 and make it to the nfc championship game, but after that i’m not sure, but if there d-line plays good and gett pressure on the quarterback, then i believe they can win it all

by ben manson on Aug 26, 2009 1:41 PM EDT reply actions

10-6 or 11-5

I think the Falcons will go either 10-6 or 11-5. They have some tough games on their schedule, but they are a good team which is only going to get better, they can handle it. I see their offense taking major strides again this year. Matty Ice will be better and Gonzalez will add another (needed) major threat to the team.

Matt Ryan – 3,600 yards 24 td’s 11 int’s 63 %
Michael Turner – 1400 yds 11 td’s
Jerious Norwood – 900-1000 total yards 5-7 td’s
Roddy White – 1200-1300 yds 7-9 td’s
Tony Gonzalez – 800-900 yds 5-7 td’s

That is my unbiased view on the Falcons this year. I believe those to be reasonable predictions.
