Pre-Season Open Thread: Atlanta Falcons at Detroit Lions

Atlanta_falcons_v_48bb_medium

via cdn.picapp.com

My fingers are tingling as I type this, because football is back! At long last, things like work, life and the love of family and friends can fade into the background where it belongs.

I can't wait any longer, so I see no reason why you should. Let's jump into our first (technically meaningless) game of the pre-season.

Who? Our beloved Atlanta Falcons against the scurvy Detroit Lions

Where? Ford Field, Detroit, Michigan

Weather? Sunny with a high of 86 degrees, and a likely Falcon victory forecast.

Fun Fact? Let's go multiple fun facts, shall we? Last year, the Lions were the team the Falcons feasted on in week 1, when Matt Ryan threw a dart on his very first career pass into the end zone. This is also a great opportunity to look at some camp battles in action, according to Atlanta Falcons Examiner.

Injuries? Biggest one is obviously to Harry Douglas, which will keep him out for the season. Otherwise, the roster is reasonably healthy, and there's plenty of guys competing for a shot at a roster spot.

Odds? It's the pre-season. If you're betting on these games, you have a gambling problem. There. I said it.

Foe? Check out the excellent Lions coverage over at Pride of Detroit, SB Nation's Detroit football blog. Well worth the read, in my opinion, and this is a Lions team that has a lot of reasons to be optimistic.

GO FALCONS! Let's take all nine lives!

Excited

Only 3.5 hours to go! I’m definitely excited that football is back. I’m really looking forward to watching the rookies get some game time.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Well..

I got over-the-dugout seats at the Braves this afternoon, ofcourse, same time the Falcons play.

Thank God for DVR.

I am actually not going to complain

if the Lions do really well. I mean… I would like to see our first stringers dominate so I can get a very positive and dangerously over-optomistic evaluation of them, but the better the lions do, the better their chances of them upsetting the Saints in week 1 – and I kinda have a fettish for rookie QBs, so… go Stafford (even though he’ll be their second team QB this game… unless of course Owens or Middleton want to pick him off 3 times, that would be fine and dandy too)!

Either way this game goes… I’m excited. I’m just glad to see our guys on the field again.

I’m also predicting Grimes to be an elite punt returner… I think more than anything, I’m excited to see what he can do in that department.

the guy is lightning fast… he lacks technique for shedding blockers though. When he gets between guys, he’s flying, when they get their hands on him, he can’t get around them. Pretty much exactly what I expected. At least he isn’t disappointing. He should develop well over the next year.

takeaways from this game...

i know it’s just a meaningless preseason game, but a few thoughts…

1 – Matt Ryan is not going to have a sophomore slump. he looked sharp and the offensive starters showed you what you wanted to see. got a feeling Turner has another massive year
2 – some of the rookies looked great. Dimitroff seems to have had another good draft, at least based on what we know so far
3 – based on what happened in the 4th quarter (specifically that last Detroit drive), our defense gets TERRIBLE once you get past the second string. i know it was guys who were 3rd or 4th on the depth chart, but it would have been encouraging to stop the Detroit Lions scrubs. i’m thinking some of the early cuts may be based on the horrendous defense on the last drive. that was a joke.

by cheshire falcon on Aug 15, 2009 7:18 PM EDT reply actions   2 recs

random thoughts during the game....

The falcons seem to have a lot of decent defensive tackles….unlike last year

Trey Lewis looks really out of shape

Mike Peterson seems to be everywhere, which might be like having two middle linebackers on the field.

Eric Weems seems to have better field vision as a kick returner than Thomas Brown, but will there be room on the roster for him?

Thomas Brown’s playing time much higher than Snelling’s. Does this mean Snelling is being held out and is being considered over Brown for the #3 back? Or could it be that they are just evaluating Brown? I like both, but I don’t see either of them as a viable backup to michael turner. I also doubt whether Jerious Norwood could ever be considered a viable every down back. The contrast of blazing speed/size presents the same challenge as the Saints have with Reggie Bush.

DJ Shockley…I really wish DJ would break out, but he still seems to make a lot of the same mistakes as in college(inaccurate, risky throws). Is this because he’s working with the third team normally and has little protection, or is there no hope of him making it any further than #3.(or will he even make the cut this year?)

Is Kroy Biermann like 30-40 pounds bigger than last year?

Matt Stafford has an incredible arm. But does he suffer from the “uncatchable ball” syndrome that has plagued so many strong armed QB’s(Mike Vick for example)? The commentators blamed the receiver for missing three balls in a row, and that could be, but could it be that Stafford has no touch on the ball and the receivers don’t have time to respond? Could be a long season. Keep in mind Roddy White was blamed for dropping balls, until another QB started passing to him.

by Falcaddiction on Aug 15, 2009 7:32 PM EDT reply actions

Snelling will keep a spot as the b/u FB over Hayes, he that Justin Griffith/Jacob Hestor/Ernest Graham combo back...

Might as well have a guy that can do both. Also, his special teams play is solid. However, if the season started today, I think Brown is the 3rd string RB…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

And...

White still drops a high amount of balls.

Chris Owens is a Raven-esque defensive machine. He is the next big thing.

OK, I’m done.

by Falcaddiction on Aug 15, 2009 7:33 PM EDT reply actions

I wanna see him in coverage agaist some better WRs, but in run support, he's strong...

his instincts seemed solid

very smart for a CB, he knew when it was safe to bite on a run play but wasn’t fooled by play action. When in doubt, he kept tight with his WR until he knew for sure it was time to attack the RB. He was also very fast… fast enough to make up for delaying on pursuing the RB.

Listened / Watched the game in between errands.

Here’s my summation:

1st string Offense = pure gold. Keep them healthy!
1st string Defense = still seems suspect against the run but covered the pass a tiny bit better.
2nd string Offense = decent. Redman was ok. Receivers were fairly dependable.
2nd string Defense = Peria was monster against the run, it’s just a shame the rest of the second defensive squad wasn’t. But man, our rookies seem to be ball hawkers! Love to see that.
3rd string Offense = Shockey….needs to play better than that. Way better. Mistakes, too-high/overthrown balls. Not good. Thomas Brown, when he has an adequate hole, can get the job done. But he won’t find those kinda holes against 1st team defenses.
3rd string Defense = what third string defense? How does a third string QB run for forty yards? Explain that. TD, get those roster shears ready!
4th string QB = surprisingly better than I anticipated after Roam the Dome. JPW actually made some good passes. He seemed poised enough. Still some decision making issues though.

You have opinions. Share them.
