Interesting contract terms
According to PFT, he signed for $1.6M this year with a $5.2M team option for 2010, hmmm…
As McNabb has some history of getting nicked up, there must be better insurance policies out there for Philly. I’m not sure if Vick’s style is something you want in a backup QB; he generally sucked as a pocket passer.
I hope Vick’s playing career ends like Joe Theismann’s, preferably during that ‘homecoming’ game. Cheers!
Who gets to play LT?

I don’t know if anyone would maim him that way on purpose, it’s just a personal twisted little fantasy of mine. I’m a reasonable man, though. Any career ending injury will be just fine. :)
Again, why?

That's a little harsh
Why would you wish for something like that?

Hatred, in a word. He royally screwed the Falcons organization (and Falcons fans), due to his premeditated, systematic, criminal behavior and lied about it until the very day of his plea bargain agreement. I’m not a forgiving person toward remorseless trash like him (but that’s just me).
My personal opinions aside, Big Media has got to love all this. The story of his fall and potential redemption is exactly the kind of thing they feast on. If McNabb gets hurt and Vick becomes a starter, the frenzy will be incredible.
Well ...
then you must have a lot of faith in his abilities. I agree, w/out a doubt, the gap between Vick and Matty Ice was painful, but aren’t we better off in the long run?
I mean, you say that he “royally screwed the Falcons organization,” but consider this:
Scenario A: Vick never goes to jail and he’s still a Falcon. He plays out his career in Atlanta, retiring in 2015. He takes us back to the playoffs a couple of times, but he disappoints more often than not (due to his inability to pass a football), and he never wins us a SB.
Scenario B: Status quo continues (w/ Matty Ice at the helm) …
I like scenario B, and, of course, I can’t guarantee it’d have played out like that. But in the end, losing Vick might be better for the franchise over the next 5-10 years anyway.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Defining "screwed"
You’re absolutely right that ultimately the Falcons are better off in the long run with Vick gone. It turns out that he only screwed them short-term. From our vantage point 3 years later, he kind of did us a favor by getting his ass in trouble, didn’t he? We shed most of that ridiculous contract and (knock wood) we have a franchise QB who appears to be a future elite passer.
Ironic and almost humorous, in retrospect! When you look at how bad of a death spiral that whole affair could have descended into (they’re the FALCONS, right?), we have been unbelievably fortunate (not to mention smart) since Petrino bailed.
One step back, two steps forward
I agree that the Falcon’s are better off from a football perspective with Matt Ryan under center rather that Mick Vick, but that does not, in my opinion, diminish the harm Vick did to this franchise. We lost several high picks in the trade to acquire him only to for him to have a relatively short tenure in Atlanta, his lack of consistency and accuracy seemed to hamper the development of other players (esp WRs), he publicly tarnished the franchise through his disgusting and felonious behavior, and his actions reflected badly on the sport in general in a similar vein as the league’s drunk drivers, domestic abusers, and drug users. Vick didn’t even have the moral constitution to own his mistakes and admit that he, and not the influence of others, was at fault.
I’m all for second chances, but there are some lines that you cannot uncross. In any other profession you cannot commit a series of crimes, be sent to federal prison, and then expect to be hired back by your former employer. It just doesn’t happen in real life, and shouldn’t happen in the NFL. I was never an Eagle fan due to the way their fanbase seems to act with out any modicum of class or sportsmanship, but now I’ll be actively rooting for them to fail.
Finally..
The Rock has come back to the Falcoholic. No wait, that’s not what I wanted to say. I meant, the monkey is off our back. Can’t wait til he gets to meet John Abraham.

Yup.
Yeah, December 6th will be something else. Glad I already have my ticket. Could be an epic night. Here’s hoping, however Reid uses him, he doesn’t make his comeback against us.

Words outta my mouth
I still love Vick and if Vick can get into a decent shape by the 12/06 matchup…we could have problems and if anyone remembers that classic game of what we did to Minnesota and Green Bay (ah memories) then we’re in for a fantastic match up…who knows he may not even play that game…but I’M EXCITED!

That game will be ridiculous
I hope he gets to play somewhat in a wildcat formation
At least...
Rotoworld can now take the little Falcons logo off his name when they post the daily Vick news. God that bugged me.
Bitter sweet...
I have been saying that I hope Vick gets another opportunity in the NFL since a few months after he was imprisoned. I really hope that he becomes a positive role model for youths and uses his stature to speak out against dog fighting and animal cruelty.
With news of this signing, though, I’ve become very nervous. I hope we win that game on December 6th – that is all I can say. I never thought he was a great QB, but there is no denying that he had the capability to win a game with his electrifying athletic ability. Also, I don’t want his success to translate into bitter Falcons fans. I wouldn’t trade Ryan for Vick in a million years, but I suspect there are some who would. Lots of mixed emotions here.
Shockley will be busy testing out our defense the week before that game…
I was seriously hoping
he would end up in the AFC.

Not a concern
All Vick will ever amount to in Phily is a gimmick player unable to crack even the backup role at QB (remember Vick’s epic “success” when Jim Mora tried to install a West Coast offense modified to disguise Vick’s many flaws as a passer? Guess which kind of offense Andy Reid runs.). They will perhaps have him play special teams or run a wildcat play or two each game, but I highly doubt Vick will be anything special or change the outcome of games.
Crowd reaction
I am interested to see what kind of reception he gets, I wont be surprised if he gets a warm reception.
I will be booing, VERY loudly...
More than enough for everybody, but y’all are more than welcome to join in.

It will be a way to figure out who the true Falcons Fans are
I am all about Vick coming back to play. I think his is an electric player who is phenomenal when on the run. I wish him nothing but the best.
But
When it comes down to it, Vick is now a memeber of the Philidelphia Eagles. A team that I despise more that Adam Jennings and Refs with terrible eyesight. I don’t care if he comes back to the field with a Halo circling his head, he now plays for the enemy. If you’re a true Falcons fan you will cheer loud and proud when the Dirty Birds take the field and scream at the top of your lungs whenever the Eagles try to run a play.
Good Luck MV7. I hope that you revive your career. But when it comes to the Falcons, you’re just another teams back up QB.

i'll be there 12/6...
and i’ll have no problem booing Mike Vick. it’s not just that he’s another team’s backup QB… this man train wrecked our entire franchise and we would still be dealing with the aftermath had we not hired a couple of genius’s to run things.
do i hope he turns his life around? yeah, of course. but i don’t think there has ever been a fanbase in history that has more of a right to hate a player than Falcons fans do with Mike Vick.

C’mon man, the Falcons did themselves in after being hit by the tractor trailer crash that was Mike Vick’s scandal….Bad coaches and horrible defense…meh..it was way more than just Mike Vick.

yeah but wait
and see. a lot of Vick fans will show up with their no. 7 jerseys on and be cheering on the opposing team. A lot of our old fan base were more Vick fans than Falcon fans. That is why we no longer have that season ticket waitng list of over 50k people. Some things I will never understand…

I don't understand some thing either
I really wish the best for him. I think Goodell must have been bullied in high school or something because it’s just despicable to suspend Vick. Dude payed his debt to society (probably a harsher penalty than you or I would have gotten under similar circumstances) and should be free to resume his profession of choice.
I sincerely hope that the race-war that essentially started in Atlanta over the Vick issue doesn’t follow him to Philly because that was just sad on all sides.
I remember one particular instance back in early 2008 where some caller into a local sports talk show called the Falcons “racist” and said that “they turned their backs on Vick by not supporting him more”. I never understood that faction of the fanbase (which was a lot larger than I initially realized). What did you want the Falcons to do? Go to the federal judge and tell him that he couldn’t sentence Vick because he was a Falcon? I really don’t know how else to put it, but I realized that a lot of the people that were purely Vick fans were just plain dumb.

This.
I really don’t know how else to put it, but I realized that a lot of the people that were purely Vick fans were just plain dumb.
I’ve heard similar reports about how the franchise turned its back on Vick. What these fans do not realize is that the NFL is a business. Vick could not legally suit up and play, even if Blank wanted his team to be associated with a convicted criminal. So what were the Falcons supposed to do? Not play in 07 and 08? No, the Falcons did what they needed to and recovered and are now better off for it.
It has nothing to do with whether or not Vick was a good player or that he was an African-American. It has everything to do with the fact that he messed up, got sent to jail, and could not play football. The Falcons had to move on regardless of what happened. Vick’s imprisonment did not end the football season. True Falcon fans understand this.
Let Vick’s supporters don his Eagles jersey for all I care. The Falcons fanbase is better off without those fickle Vickers.

great points
ya’ know, i’ve never really been that bothered by the faction of the fan base that you’re talking about, because to me their position is so blatantly ignorant of the facts that it doesn’t even warrant acknowledging. i guess it also helps that most all of my friends who are Falcon fans aren’t in that camp, so i never have to be around it.
but you ask a very valid question that i’m yet to hear anyone answer… what exactly were the Falcons supposed to do in this situation? i don’t know that they could have handled it any classier than they did. the man who had more right than anyone to publicly rip Vick is Arthur Blank, and he’s been nothing but gracious about the entire thing.
i guess you could say that they should have let him come back to the team when his sentence was up, but why on earth would they do that? take away the unbelievable distraction it would have been and just look at it from a football perspective. you already have an incredible running attack, and to balance your offense, you need a traditional passing QB. oh, and you just happened to have a guy come in and have arguably the greatest rookie season of all time doing it who is a total class act, an actual leader, and a prodigy at the position. so we should replace that with a QB whose one asset is speed, an asset in which he may have already passed his prime in
i actually heard a caller on sports talk radio this morning say he was a huge Vick fan, but had a lot of issues with Matt Ryan. the statement was so patently absurd that the host hung up on him, and rightfully so. but that’s the mentality you’re dealing with with these people. they are so blinded by what they “want” to believe, and what they “wish” were true that discussing reality is pointless.

Good for him
I’ve been pretty outspoken here against kciV, and I never really cared for him when he was a Falcon. But I’m all for second chances, and this is about as good of a situation for him to land in that I can think of:
1) Strong organization – check.
2) Stong head coach – check.
3) Established starting QB – check.
They also have AJ Feely as a backup QB – but with Kevin Kolb out with a torn ACL, he may have a good shot at moving into the #2 spot quickly. McNabb can possibly help him in the transition from running QB into a bonafide passer.
The only problem is that Reid runs a true West Coast Offense. He’ll have to put in a lot of time and effort (that he wouldn’t before) to know his reads and check-downs, and to work on his accuracy (if he ever wants to be more than a Wildcat option).
Hope he learned from this and makes the best of this opportunity. I just don’t want to see him on the field December 6th.
The system isn't an issue
Vick played for Mora and his west-coast system for three years. The basic terminology is teh same regardless of the style implemented by different coaches. The hardest part will be learning the new names of the plays, which really shouldn’t be an issue either since he’ll be provided plenty of time to get back up to speed.

I was considering posting something lengthy on this
But then I realize he’s already not a Falcon any longer.
I wish the guy luck and I do hope he’s serious about turning his life and his career around. If he is, this could be a great steal for the Eagles. No matter what, though, I’m going to boo him just as hard as I boo the rest of the Eagles when we play them this year.

Racial dynamics played a big part in this
and the fact that McNabb is the starter should put out a lot of fires. Here when people called for Schaub, a sizable number of people thought it was racial. To me it wasn’t although, you can’t prove it wasn’t – so negative feelings lingered. I think it still lingers actually. I’m sure most teams didn’t want any part of that although they would love to have his talent on the field for 10-12 plays a game and you can’t blame them. with McNabb at #1, thats not an issue. This could have been the best landing he could have hoped for.
McNabb is the guy there and he tried to recruit Vick to Syracuse when he was a senior. They know each other and I presume have a good relationship and could possibly mentor and coach him. I’m sure he was in on the decision to bring Vick in. i just don’t see how they could make a move like that without consulting their star.
Hmm
I don’t ever recall anyone openly calling for Schaub to take Vick’s spot as the starting QB. Not from anyone I knew personally, not from the media, and not on any message board I frequented. And I’ve never heard anything race related concerning Schaub & Vick, much less anything else until the ignorant people started calling in when Blank went after Vick’s signing bonus.
Personally, if people I knew were calling for Schaub because of his race, I would strongly reconsider the company I keep. I’m inclined to believe that almost every person here would do the same, at least I hope so. Playing that card only goes to show how out of touch one is with reality these days.
Plus, if someone thought Schaub was a better option than Vick while he was here, they might not have been paying much attention because Vick gave us the best chance at winning every single time he stepped on the field.
"This is America, if we can’t self-righteously look down on others and blame them for our faults, the commies win."-----Cormican on Bleeding Green Nation w/r/t fans overreacting to the Eagles signing of Michael Vick
I'm just saying race is the elephant in the room
People don’t want to talk about it because its uncomfortable – but its there. I wasn’t trying to imply there was anything between Vick and Schaub personally – but I do recall alot of message board/blog chatter to that effect although not here. Actually, the reason I started posting here was to get away from the Vick hysteria
True
I just didn’t recall it ever being an issue when Schaub was around, only recently with Vicks criminal charges and subsequent release from the Falcons.
Thankfully we have The Falcoholic as a beacon of light for forward thinking and intelligent, thoughtful discussion without resorting to classless and close minded debate points.

I can see what he's saying though ...
If Vick were white, would the objections about his passing ability have come up as often. Who knows?

Schaub vs kciV
Jesse – I don’t know about while they were both Falcons, but Schaub has proved himself to be the better QB in these last few years in Houston. His #1 problem has been staying healthy.
No doubt
He was a clear starter from day one, he just happened to be behind Vick at the time. I remember commenting as such to many co-workers that if Vick went down, the Falcons would be just fine with Schaub. No one is questioning Schaub’s ability, but back then Vick was the focal point of this team. He provided something that no other player in football could and every person involved with the Falcons, from the fans, the front office, the coaches, to the players, all believed that with him on the field we could beat anyone.

VICK and FALCONS FAN w/ SEASON TICKETS
Vick was an awesome player who helped to fill up the seats at the Dome…In reality, i don’t think race had anything to do with why Vick was released…Blank couldn’t afford to hang on to a player who was gonna spend time in jail….plain and simple. I rooted for VICK and I rooted for my FALCONS…that what it was. I will continue to root for VICK, even on 12/06.
…There will Just more cheering and rooting for the Falcons to win
His passing…meh it was all right to be generous…but y’all gotta admit that he was a dynamic playmaker for the Falcons.
“Plus, if someone thought Schaub was a better option than Vick while he was here, they might not have been paying much attention because Vick gave us the best chance at winning every single time he stepped on the field.” —jesse28
That’s exactly how it was…he wasn’t a one man show, but he put on one hell of performance in each game. I hope he get’s blessed with his new opportunity with the Eagles (i just threw up a little) I wish him all the best to a new start. #7 Baby!!!
I agree
“You kind of have to go back to the way he was coached,” McNabb said. "The guy had about (two) head coaches and three coordinators. The coach probably taught him if one’s not open, then take off, or look for two and then just go.
NFL.com article McNabb suggests he and Vick could take field together
The guy is a phenomenal athlete and I think he is going to spark the highlight reels again as soon as he steps on the field. I think he is an excellent fit for the eagles and they are going to utilize him well. McNabb sounds like he’s already taken him under his wing and will be an awesome mentor for the guy.
To be completely honest too, I don’t mind rooting for the Eagles so long as they lose week 13. They are possibly the least evil team of the NFC East (well, them or the Giants).

Agreed
Most recently, 2004, which had we gone to the Superbowl, I am sure we would have won easily. The best year with Vick at the helm, they go get TO to save McNabb’s rear in that game.

I think my comments might have been misinterpreted
All I was saying was Vick had a polarizing influence on the fan base way before Bad News Kennels. From a PR standpoint, he was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Remenber that ESPN town hall fiasco? I’m not really sure how that carries over into the club house if it does at all but I’m sure management was doing their best to minimize any fallout.
