Roddy White A No Show At Atlanta Falcons Camp

D'oh!

Apparently those Roddy White rumors weren't far from the truth, as the team's star receiver skipped the first day of training camp, apparently over a contract dispute. This is bad news for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that White is far and away our best receiver.

It's amazing to think that a guy who was so well-known for being terrible at catching the football has become so good at, well, catching the football, but it's a welcome transformation. He still has some issues with drops that I don't enjoy, but it's pretty clear we need him badly, and this is a deal that has to get done. I just hope it's sooner than later.

Weigh in on this compelling camp situation, if you would.

This is time for White to show some maturity. BTW does he still drive that taxi?

by Jon Cushman on Jul 31, 2009 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Maybe ...

I mean, he does have a year left on his contract, so he needs to be there. Thus, the $17K he’s losing a day.

In the alternative, maybe Blank/The Comrade need to show some appreciation, and not make the kid play out his rookie contract when he only has a year left on it anyway and he has clearly proven himself.

Roddy White

Seems to me he has some catching up to do in order to justify all the money he was paid that he did nothing for. Let him go, open up training camp for anyone who wants his job.

Yeah its bad but...

He has really become one of the top WR’s in the league. Sure I don’t think holdouts are the right thing to do, but its not so bad. Its not like he doesn’t know the offense, or at least the basics of it.

I think he does deserve the money though, Greg Jennings is supposed to earn 3 times him this year, and Roddy is a huge part of our passing attack.

I'm going to you assume you aren't being completely serious ...

I mean its not that big of a deal

It’s not like he’s a bad guy or he doesn’t support the team. He just wants to get some insurance and get paid.

And personally I think he deserves a new contract.

by ChickenLay on Aug 1, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

it sux, but I'm not too worried yet,

if this drags out for a long long time then I might worry, but I know the falcons brass will take care of roddy and get the deal done before the season starts, hopefully before the pre-season even starts up.

Come on Roddy!

I wouldn’t mind us giving him 6-8 mil a year on a 4-5 year contract with 20 guaranteed. I’m not yet convinced he’s worth 10 a year yet, one more year of production would have been nice. I personally think it’s pretty weak he’s holding out though. His agent should know…historically we always pay our key guys well, plus we are under the salary cap by quite a bit, so he’ll get his. Roddy, if your reading this, please just get into camp, you’ll get paid, and this year is way too big for the organization for you to start off like this….come on man your better than this.

Also, this makes me even more mad we traded Laurent Robinson for virtually nothing!

This is what I was worried about.

Love me some Roddy, but damn.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

by runningback on Aug 1, 2009 4:05 AM EDT reply actions

There's two ways to go here

1) He should play out his original contract, because realistically, he didn’t play well for the first couple years, and was earning a ton of money for under-producing.

2) He’s matured into a great WR, and as a team staple, he should be compensated.

I tend to think that it’s some combination of the two. However, I also think that in a situation like the NFL, where you’re golden one day and garbage the next, if behooves the players to go out and make sure they’re under contract. He may in fact have one more year of contracted payment right now, but if he doesn’t get that contract now, and then he tears his ACL or something, he’s got no earning power past February. I understand completely the way he feels in that regard.

by blackertai on Aug 1, 2009 12:27 PM EDT reply actions

However

I don’t think that justifies not showing up to work. I mean, you are STILL under contract right now. Get the deal done, yes, but don’t skimp out on your job while you’ve got it.

by blackertai on Aug 1, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

THIS

I totally agree. He needs to be there, but his leverage goes out the window if he shows up. Then, Blank/The Comrade can sit back and watch, maybe for an entire year, all to get a little more empirical proof that he’s worth top-WR-money.

I don’t blame the guy, for now at least. If this stretches into week 3 or 4 of training camp, I might change my tune, but for now, he’s trying to secure his livelihood, and I won’t fault anyone for that.

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

by FrankyWren on Aug 1, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed

This is his only leverage. I totally think this is the right thing to do (from his perspective). I won’t be worried about this unless he’s still holding out into late August. And the Greg Jennings deal virtually guaranteed this will be a $9-9.5M deal (per year, for 4-5 years) whenever it finally gets done, not $6-8M…

Having Roddy White is important...

But maybe this allows up to further evaluate HD’s potential. I know it’s only his 2nd year in the league, but given the snaps he could be a real playmaker. I could see sliding into the #1 role before Jenkins. No matter what, I think it works itself out. I’m looking forward to seeing how Falcons mgmt handles this. In New England, this is when guys get sent elsewhere. Maybe swap him for Boldin , who knows…

I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

by NaGaNole on Aug 1, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions

No way

New England gets rid of guys that aren’t worth the $$ – like Deion Branch…

Arizona is having problems with Boldin because he wants to get paid like Fitzgerald, so if we swapped Roddy for him, he’d still want to get the big $$ extension. Plus:
1) he’s a year older than Roddy.
2) he’s only played 16 games twice in his 6 year career (Roddy has never missed a game).
3) he is not a #1 WR – he is a possession receiver (yes, he can do more than just underneath stuff, but he is not as dynamic as Fitz or Roddy).
So, they’d be paying the same huge money for a guy who is a year older, somewhat injury prone, and not as good of a WR as Roddy.

No thanks.

Yeah, sorry

I know Boldin’s your boy, cause he went to FSU and all… And I respect the heck out of him – I mean he broke his face at the end of the NYJ game, and only missed 2 games… But I’d take Roddy now (and moving forward) over probably everybody in the NFL except maybe Fitzgerald and Andre Johnson… I might could be talked into Calvin Johnson and a couple others, but I’m serious – I think Roddy is one of the best WRs, and at 27 should be right there for several years…

I couldn't agree more, but...

I don’t want distractions. T Owens is right up there, but I don’t want him on our team…

just out of curiousity

who are some of the 8-10M guys? I’ve never really keep up with salaries and I would have never thought Jennings would be on that list. Just to see how Roddy compares.

Here's

A link to USA Today’s Salary Cap tool. You’ve got to remember, though, that it is a list of the 2008 salaries, and there have been several changes since then: Marvin Harrison and Torry Holt cut (with Holt getting a new 3 yr $20M contract with the Jags), Fitzgerald (4 yr $40M) and Jennings (3 yr $27M) to contract extensions, etc. All the guys with “new” money are going to be up near the top of that list…

Roddy White & the boys

I can’t help but see some irony in that our receiving corps and offensive line were both inept and regarded as dog meat (no pun intended!) before last season. The media and fanbase quickly forgot about these deficiencies as the Falcons surprised us. Our inept, underachieving, ball-dropping Roddy White winds up in the Pro-Bowl of all things! Even Jenkins showed promise. Maybe Ryan’s accuracy and timing had something to do with this! As much as I loved Vick, his accuracy was not one of his stronger suits (though I think if he puts the time in (no pun intended once again) he can become an accurate productive QB once again, but I digress. I hate it when players sit out but I can’t fault them. Unlike other sports, most of their contracts are NOT guaranteed which forces the players to get the money while they can. They are one injury away from being cut and disposed like a worn out jock strap. I would like to see more before giving up the big money, but I think Matt Ryan is a big part of our receiving corps success (what else changed??). The Falcons will get a deal done in short order.

by Gridiron Grandpoobah on Aug 1, 2009 4:39 PM EDT reply actions

what else has changed?

In ‘07 is when Roddy finally “got it” our star QB went to prison, we rummaged thru the nfl recycled QBs bin to replace him, our running game was non existant, our D was anything but impressive, but Roddy had a breakout year. Defenses focused on him and Turner last year making it easier for Jenkins, Harry Douglas was a refreshing surprise after I asked myself why we drafted a WR when we picked him, Finn FINALLY came back from 2 knee injuries and every time he caught a pass it moved the chains on 3rd down. I’m as big a Matt Ryan fan as anybody on this message board but he doesn’t deserve all the credit. We played as a team last year, not 53 individuals trying to make a name for themselves.

Matt Ryan is the savior, and we have a shot at winning the superbowl this year, yeah…I went there

by FLA_Falcon on Aug 2, 2009 12:37 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Roddy is overated. didn’t he drop a game winner in the playoffs. Why can’t he prove his worth with honoring his contract. If Vick was the Falcon quarterback White would still be struggling. All I ever see from him is running fairly fast in a straightline and catching 50 percent of the perfect passes thrown his way.

by crawfordlong56 on Aug 1, 2009 5:26 PM EDT reply actions

I dont know about the playoffs

I was at work that sunday. But I do remember him dropping the game winner against denver with about 14 seconds left.

Yes he still drops some catchable balls but he has gotten a LOT better the past 2 years. Remember he had a breakout year with a revolving door at QB…yeah, he’s pretty good. It’s not all Matt Ryan. I understand where he is coming from, like a few others have said, the next play could be your last in the NFL and then no more money. I just wish we could have worked it out before camp, I HATE holdouts but, it is part of the game

by FLA_Falcon on Aug 1, 2009 6:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Well,

The dropped possible game winner was against Denver. He did drop a long pass that would’ve been a big gain (and maybe a score) against Arizona, but the team still got a TD on that drive. He has a fairly high number of drops, but not a high percentage of drops, because was thrown 148 balls last year.

He “proved his worth” by out-performing his contract value by about 4x the last two years. Actually, he only made ~$810K in salary last year (he was a $1.7M hit on the cap with the Signing Bonus spread over the length of the contract), so he outperformed that by about 10×.

By the way, he caught 59% of the balls thrown his way last year. Yes, that’s pretty good; and no, they weren’t all “perfect” passes…

yes i will admit it is the american way to idolize people by the size of their bank account. From a not so wealthy perspective 2.5 million properly invested would ease any fears I would have about my financial future. Being a falcon fan myself I prefer that he take his greed to another city.

Hmm...

I think not showing up to camp is a statement about his maturity and his intent. Sure he does deserve to be paid, but if he values that over practising to win a championship then his goals are out of wack.

I guess so

I mean, he did hold out 6 days for his rookie contract, so he definitely is a guy who will make a stink when he wants to “get paid” and that may say something about “his maturity and his intent”. Heck, even if/when he gets this deal done (say, a 4 year extension?), we’ll probably have to go through this again in 3-4 years. I guess as long as he backs it up, I don’t care…

by orang3b on Aug 2, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

but this is a good thing he wants to stay with the franchise

if his deal runs out any team can pick him up and you know he wants his money so he would hardly be in the red and black if other teams could make offers i love the the falcons but we are not a team known for throwing the money

by mistab50 on Aug 2, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah this is a game..

but its also a business…this is one reason im not a huge NFL fan…but it is what it is. These put a lot on the line and if they have a shot at big bucks…then they should go for it. As long as the money is deserved. Which my be part of the problem..

I believe he will

the guy wants to win just as much as everyone else on the team… he is a Pro Bowl caliber WR now and a super bowl title will be enough to give him more money through endorcements than a football contract will pay him.

I mean Fitzgerald and Polomalu just made $200k each for their presence on the cover of the new madden alone. Sure that seems small compared to a football contract, but in all fairness, that is just one deal, not to mention how many others that opened up for them.

Roddy White

I see Roddy showing up to training camp before too long. Because the reality is that the team holds all the cards at this point. Should they decide not to pay him, he’ll have to show up because he can’t afford to keep giving free money to the team.

Say he plays out this year, and they don’t agree on a new collective bargaining agreement then he is only a restricted free agent and we can match any offers. If the league does agree on a new collective bargaining agreement then we can franchise him.

While I’d like to see a new deal worked out so that our offense can get into synch. I could see him getting Greg Jennings money, but not Larry Fitz. Also, Jenks was also a first round pick, it would be interesting to see what he could do as a #1.

Is it really so bad?

I mean he wants an extension after all.So he wants to be here and obviously the Falcons want him too. .I don’t hold it against him. I don’t even think it shows immaturity. Holding out is the best leverage an NFL player has. He doesn’t want to go into his last year knowing his future earning potential is up in the air. He could play out the string and walk presumably. I don’t know what he makes now and don’t really want to know but it sounds like he could be making a whole lot more if he gambled his health and production hold up this year.

He's going to get his money

I don’t want to disparage Roddy, because I’ve seen few to no signs that he’s not a good teammate, but I never doubted for a second that he’d want his money and make it well known.

For those of you saying let Douglas and Jenkins start, here’s a follow-up question: who goes in the slot? Unless Aaron Kelly makes the team and immediately emerges, there’s not a whole lot of depth to slide up the chart. We’ll end up paying Roddy, but I hope it’s done so that he’s not chewing up a massive amount of cap space.

Brian Finneran would play out of the slot for as long as his robotic knees could take.

I’d much rather see the White, Jenkins, Douglas combo though.

honestly, avoid the 3WR sets

or send Gongo wide… Roddy put up huge numbers because he was the #1 option on a team with limited WR talent. Now that Douglas has a year under his belt and now that we have Gonzo I don’t think $10m is worth it for White. He’s a top 15 WR, but this holdout is hugely disappointing.

by nathan rothschild on Aug 3, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I just posted something to the same effect, really

If we could get him for Greg Jennings money for three years, it’d be a boon. His numbers will take a hit this year, but he’s a good blocker and is still a very, very good receiver.
