About time, you say? Agreed. Vote below for the candidate you think is the best Falcons WR of all time. No stats after the jump. If you want em, go get em. Top 4 in the poll win spots on the team. Then we'll have a fully functioning offense!

As its Monday once again, I'm going to ask that after you vote, please nominate candidates for the Greatest Falcons DL of all time. Let's try to name at least two candidates per position. Gotta somehow make it a contest this time around.

It's insane that White Shoes is third in the voting

Count me among those who loved the guy, but c’mon. This is best, not favorite.

Dave...

I’m happy to have mobile commenting finally but I still can’t vote or see the results….any idea when/if that’s going to be available?

by FLA_Falcon on Jul 21, 2009 11:43 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I can certainly ask

But off the top of my head, I’m not sure. Remind me if I don’t get back to you soon.

Just so you know, though, it’s Andre Rison running away with it, followed by Mathis, followed very closely by White Shoes.

I can barely remember any of these guys....

So, I did what I normally do and voted based on stats and not those cooky things called “intangibles”

I do plan on having a special separate vote for best KR/PRs. Jennings will, of course, not be invited to that party.

You have opinions. Share them.

If we had a most frustrating Falcon category

He’d be in the running. I pulled a Fred Sanford more than once watching him return kicks.

I really thought White was gonna have the advantage

with the whole “more recent” trend these polls have taken…

this is going about how I could expect it to, I’d have Terrance Mathis and Andre Rison as my starting two (basing my opinion on stats).

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

by MentallyMIA on Jul 22, 2009 2:50 AM EDT reply actions

obviously

the majority of voters must be in thier 20’s or fairly new falcon fans. Terrence Mathis should be running away with this thing,. im just sayin…

Life is a garden. Dig it!

by Hardcore Falcon on Jul 22, 2009 7:39 AM EDT reply actions

I'm both...

But my vote would still go to Mathis, he is the only older Falcon I remember seeing play. I was thinking it would be Mathis, Rison, Roddy…I have no idea who the Jenkins guy is

by FLA_Falcon on Jul 22, 2009 8:20 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Then

Go find out. I am a young(ish) Falcon fan – I didn’t really know who Alfred Jenkins was besides hearing his name, until I researched him for this vote – but I can make a good case that he is the best Falcon WR ever (he was my vote). And there is no way he is worse than 3rd all-time. He went to 2 Pro Bowls (Mathis 1, Rison 4) and was First Team All-Pro once (Rison 1). He is 3rd in franchise history in receptions (Mathis 1st, Rison 2nd), 2nd in yards (Mathis 1st, Rison 3rd), 3rd in TD’s (Mathis 1st, Rison 2nd), second in Games played for WRs with 110 (Mathis 126, Rison 78). Roddy will pass all these guys in total stats eventually (except maybe Mathis) if he says in Atlanta a few more years, but he’s not there yet…

by orang3b on Jul 22, 2009 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Jenkins

got my vote – I’m 38 so I actually remember him playing. I would put Mathis at a very close 2nd.
Jenkins was a wonder at catching the long balls – especially the hail marys out of the “Big Ben Left” formation……he and Alfred Jackson made up the most feared “Duo of Alfreds” in the history of the NFL. I made up that last part, but I’m certain it’s true.

Alfred isn't a name that strikes fear into hearts

So I think you’re probably right there.

Jenkins

I am 48 am was fortunate enough to watch all these receivers their entire careers (of course Roddy White is still playing so in my opinion should not be listed) Alfred Jenkins got my vote.

The Steve Bartkowski to Alfred Jenkins combo was the best deep ball threat of the mid 70s to early 80s, helping the Falcons to a then franchise best 12-4 record in 1980 when they should have won the Super Bowl. On the first (?) pass in the playoff game against Dallas (a game they eventually lost 30-27), Bartkowski threw a bomb to Jenkins ( about 60 yards or so) for a TD. What a great combo! Those were the days!

I don’t think you can just go by pure stats, because the game was a lot different in the 70s and 80s than it is today – the running game was much more prevalent. In 1980 for example Lynn Cain rushed for 900+ yards and William Andrews ran for 1100+ yards – I don’t think you’ll ever see that type of rushing production again in today’s pass happy NFL.

by wljames3 on Jul 23, 2009 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions

Good point

But at the same time defenses are better equipped to stop the pass and the QB has more options on the field with 3, 4, and 5 WR sets plus TEs and RBs who can catch ball.

I don’t like comparing eras though because would all the great players from back in the day have the same level of success in todays NFL with the different rules and strategies? I’m sure some would but could you imagine Butkus trying to knock down a guy like Brandon Jacobs without wrapping up like I always see in his highlights? Lol

WIth you

100%

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

I voted for the guy

I saw him play when I was young and he’s got the stats to back it up. I love everyone on this list, but it’s gotta be Mathis.

Rison to me was the best

but also the biggest douche. Maybe we should poll that too.

I nominate
Rison
Jeff George
Deion
Joe Horn

Feel free to add yours

by zooker on Jul 22, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

biggest douche?...

Peerless Price
Adam Jennings
Mike Vick (loved him until 2007)
TJ Duckett
Bryan Johnson? (The S from Penn State)
DeAngelo Hall
Rich McKay lol

by FLA_Falcon on Jul 22, 2009 4:57 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

oh almost forgot

Bobby Punktrino should be granted a special exemption from the tenure requirement to be coach of the douches

by FLA_Falcon on Jul 22, 2009 5:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Petrino

..takes the douche award in my book. Yes, I do actually have a book listing douche awards.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

by runningback on Jul 23, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Petrino was a d*ck

but he skipped town in what 10 months? l’m still torn between Jeff George and Bad Moon

by zooker on Jul 24, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions

very true

If we’re going coaches too, Glanville goes to the head of the class.

Not to flood this thread

But I cannot believe White Shoes is running third. I would like one person to defend that decision, and I mean that respectfully.

maybe...

He has an awesome nickname? Lol or possibly he is voting for himself repeatedly?

by FLA_Falcon on Jul 22, 2009 6:39 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Well, he is a nice guy

I met him once back when I was umpiring girls softball. I called his daughter out at the plate. He could have cussed me because I blew the call but he was very gracious and even talked a little football with me after the game. I didn’t vote for him though

by zooker on Jul 22, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

geez

First you dog his daughter on a blown call, then you don’t vote for the guy despite his great attitude!!

I think people voted for white shoes because of that crazy dance he did after scoring.

by skigator93 on Jul 22, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

lol

Isn’t he one of our strength coaches now?

Here's a pretty picture....

Matty Ice with T. Mathis, A. Rison and R. White…But Mathis was the best to me.

by dubb2210 on Jul 23, 2009 11:03 AM EDT reply actions

Wallace Francis

Along with Jenkins and Jackson, great receiver from the 70s-80s era. But Jenkins was the man, great route runner, exceptional hands. Bartkowski could always count on him to make the tough catch. And you have to remember…..all these guys played on Falcons teams that were not particularly good. A few decent seasons (sigh….1980), but overall they put up their stats with the QB being mauled and little support from the run game.

by Mooq on Jul 23, 2009 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Great call Mooq

I think Francis should have been on the list as well.

by skigator93 on Jul 23, 2009 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions

You could count on Mathis to make the catch.

Rison was up and down his whole carrer.

Upon moving to AL, I let my wife decide who she would root for. After one day at a new job full of Bama fans, she met me at the door with a hearty cry of "WAR EAGLE"

by SandMountainTiger on Jul 23, 2009 4:45 PM EDT reply actions

I think that's what people are missing here

Andre Rison and Roddy White are probably close, given their exceptional talents and their sometimes inconsistencies. What I can tell you is that Mathis was about as reliable a target as I’ve seen don a Falcon uniform. They don’t make ’em like that anymore.

I finally made my vote...

and I voted for Roddy White. Not because I think he is the best. Just because I think he belongs on our top 4 list and I can’t believe he is running in 5th.

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

by MentallyMIA on Jul 23, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions

Why you letting Andre Rison vote 175+ times? I know he’s angling for a Hall Of Fame Vote but surprised he’s so concerned for winning Atlanta all time Greatest WR. Let limit his vote to 2—-one for him and one for his EGO.
