A Falcoholic Fantasy Football Discussion
Before you go nuts, this isn't the announcement about the beginning of The Falcoholic's fantasy football league...yet. We'll get to that before long, however.
Instead, this is an informal forum to discuss your fantasy football history. When did you start playing? Who's been your best draft pick, worst draft pick, or just plain favorite one? What do you call your team?
For the record, the mighty Axes are entering their third year in a 12 team keeper league, and I have one playoff berth to my name. I'll be picking second overall in the upcoming draft, which has a lot to do with the fact that I have the worst receiving corps in the history of mankind. No joke.
Fire away!

Does Madden count as Fantasy Football?
I’ve never taken the plunge into official FF. Might change this year with an official Falcoholic league…
You have opinions. Share them.
Im with you on that.
My fantasy football experience is limited to playing Madden on the x-box.
In Dimitroff we trust
Well,
I’ve been in my main league for about 5-6 years. We play in a PPR Yahoo Plus Head-to-Head league (no keepers). My team name (for the last 3 years) is DapperDanMan, because 1) my firstborn’s name is Daniel, and 2) I love me some “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”…
My worst draft pick would have to be Shaun Alexander in 2007. I think I picked him at #5 or #6, and this was the year after he was hurt and only played 10 games. I was hoping he would come back close to 2005 form, but he sucked even worse…
My best draft pick would have to be my entire draft from last year. I got Aaron Rogers, DeAngelo Williams, and Chris Johnson much, much lower on draft day than what they ended up producing. I also drafted Reggie Wayne, plus pulled off a trade for Larry Fitzgerald. Ya know what? I still didn’t win… Ya know why? Cause Jeremy Shockey is a dirty SOB. I needed about 4 points from him (did I mention this was a PPR league? that should be nothing), but he got me about 2.5 – he is always hurt, he’s got a bad attitude, his hands are like concrete covered in butter, he’s a racist, he beats up his girlfriends, he kills cats, he sets churces on fire, he was involved in the 9/11 attacks, and there are rumors he’s going to stage a coup and overthrow Dave… no, I’m not bitter.
Um, I hate to tell you this, but...
Dave IS Jeremy Shockey….
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

I like your views on Shockey
that made me laugh…
The 08 draft was a great year for surpsrise players – I lost my first pick of the draft (Tomlinson) – but he was quickly replaced by grabbing Michael Turner before game one (he went undrafted)… wow that was a steal.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
I started playing two years ago.
My best pick was Turner in the 5th round last year.
My worst pick was (sorta) was taking Drew Brees 3rd overall 2 years ago, dumped him after the 4th game for lack of production, then he went bananas with the passing yards!
My team name is always Seminoles.
Lat year I won my league, in 2007 I finished 9 out of 12 teams…

Addiction
I went through a pretty nasty FF addiction a few years back. I was in like 7 leagues and it basically took all my time. Since then, I have made it a point to only be in three leagues tops. I join a random NFL.com autodraft league, The Justice League which is one that I started with some really great friends that is heading into its 6th season, and one more league of my choosing which last year was the Falcoholic league. I will be the first to admit that my Falcoholic league showing was pretty dismal.
I am also a firm believer in getting at least somewhat creative with team names. My standard team names year in and year out include:
-Black Sabbath Vol. VI
-The James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub
-The Hidden Agenda
Worst pick ever Larry Johnson @ #2 overall the year he decided to only play 8 games. Best pick was def. Turner last year pretty late.
In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.
Let me see...
I started playing in 1990, sometime in the Byzantine Era I think it was. We had 8 people, and I was commissioner. All of us worked at the same place. We eventually expanded to 10 teams. Keeper league. I hand typed our newsletter each week, with rosters, scores, and standings. A little time consuming, but we had a blast. That league lasted until 2002, if you can believe that! Eventually we all kinda drifted apart and didn’t see each other (except on draft day), so it wasn’t as much fun. The last couple of years we were online.
I also started a league at the place I started working in 1994, and we still have that one even though I don’t run it anymore (nor do I work there anymore either). No money involved in that one.
About five years ago I joined a keeper league made up of people who live in my area; I’m in a fantasy baseball league with a lot of them as well. This one’s for money, and the pot is a pretty good one.
My team names have varied over the years.
The first league: Diz-Busters. After the Blue Oyster Cult song, “7 Screaming Diz-Busters”- seven players in our starting lineup, get it?
2nd league, Hellboys. Yeah, I read comics.
3rd league: White Russians. You know, Big Lebowski and all that.
Best draft pick, probably the first one in the first league: Barry Sanders. Rode him for years.
Worst: Can’t think of any offhand, although I’m sure there were duds- I remember drafting Trent Dilfer pretty high and hanging on to him for years.
Worst trade I ever made was in ‘91, when I traded Warren Moon and Heywood Jeffires for Christian Okoye and John Elway. Elway was probably the worst QB in fantasy football, next to Aikman, but he was a throw-in; it was Okoye I wanted to replace Bo Jackson and give me that elusive 2nd stud RB to go with Sanders. I don’t think he played 10 games that season and was out of football a year later. Moon and Jeffires hooked up for a skadillion points for years after that.
Fantasy football will drive you crazy. It’s 20% preparation, and 80% luck.
Oh, and...
The reason I thought I could part with Moon was that I had Chris Miller in the run-and-shoot! Sigh.

Totally agree
With the 20/80 (heck, luck might be even higher than that). I used to read every FFB publication I could get my hands on, but there’s always gonna be some injury, or your WR getting pushed out of bounds on the 1 (and somebody else’s RB pounding in the TD), or something to screw it all up…
Derrick Moore
Barry Sanders’ personal touchdown vulture. I’ll never forget that name…

FFB
I’ve played 4 or 5 years now with a group of guys from college. I’ve made the playoffs the past three years, but was cursed when the first year I did I pulled the equivalent of the Hasselbeck, “we want the ball, cause we’re gonna win” interception and was demolished in the championship.
Last year I had a good showing with Turner, DeAngelo Williams, and Matt Forte and i rode them all the way to the playoffs.
I played in the Falcoholic league last year, but stopped keeping up with it after about week 4. I just couldn’t get use to the FleaFlicker interface after playing on Yahoo for so long.
I’ve always wanted to do a PPR league, but the fellas I play with are not interested.

started playing 2 years ago
A friend of mine finally talked me into FF. I had been against it for a while because I want my team to shut down whoever they play in real life. I didn’t want to put myself in a position of hoping peyton manning would throw for 500 yards and 6 tds but the falcons somehow still win the game. But I finally gave in and it was fun. My worst pick was my entire first draft. Picked drew brees in the first round then proceeded to pick mainly falcons players. Wasn’t a good year to be a homer. Last year had the #1 pick and at the last second decided to take Peterson over Tomlinson. By far the best decision ever. Finished in 4th or 5th without a qb (picked hasselbeck hoping with a depleted runing game his passing numbers would increase, but he wound up being hurt) and to balance out my stroke of genius not picking LT, my computer crashed and I had no way to update my roster until it was too late to matter. Hoping to be able to put it all together this year
And my team name is A Town Stomp

I've been playing for about five years now
It’s my third in the keeper league.
My best draft pick was Maurice Jones-Drew near the end of the third round of a four round draft, rookies and previously undrafted veterans only. It’s become a little bit of league legend. I leaned over to several fellow league members to ask if I needed to trade up past him, and all of them told me they thought he was too short to make it in the NFL. Oops.
My worst draft pick was Justin Medlock, a kicker with the Chiefs who bounced out of the league after his rookie season. I picked him very high in the second round, believing he would be better than Mason Crosby and Nick Folk. Again, oops.

Yay for FF posts!
I think I pretty much covered my FF history in my previous two fantasy sports posts, but I’ll expand on the parameters put forth for this post.
I first started playing fantasy sports in general sometime around 1992, primarily baseball. I got into fantasy football when I was in the Marines in 99 and have been involved in just about every sport since then. I have been in one league with a group of guys around the world for about a decade and I have also commished a few leagues with co-workers and friends for about 7-8 years. H2H/Pts style leagues for the most part, but also Salary Cap and for the most part they have not been Keeper leagues. Almost all of my leagues recently are Yahoo based, but some have been manually maintained.
My worst pick might have been Devin Hester two years ago. Almost every league I run, I use individual defensive players instead of a whole team’s defense. Well, this was a friends league and they were using defensive teams. It was the last round, four hours in, and I was pretty much drunk, as was everyone else, and I got this bright idea that I should get Devin hester for all those return yards and TD’s. Yeah, I just inadvertantly drafted my bench WR.
Best pick probably has to be drafting Turner and Peterson last year. RB domination at it’s finest.
My team names have usually always involved something Falcons related and they change over the years as events with the team change. Vick Dominates YOU! > Vick’s Lawyer > Vick’s Parole Officer > Kill My Pet Rhino > Matty Ice and The Burner (and yes, I had them both on this team, and yes, it was awesome!).
I envy your RB tandem
I had Turner and Westbrook… fortunately Turner was carrying the slack – Westbrook was so hit or miss last season. I did wind up settling for Forte for the few games Westbrook was down and that was a manageable combo… still with turner carrying the load for like 3 players most of the time.
I was so about to go get Matt Ryan (who was also undrafted in my league last year), but Drew Brees easily held his place on my team.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
FF
I’ve been playing for 3 or 4 years. Every year i end up finishing one spot better than the year before, last year I finished 3rd so I’m more than likely I’ll finish 2nd this year. Worst pick last year was Hasselback(not spelled right) he played like 2 games last year, my favorite pick was Wes Welker 07 season, he was money. My team names are Chuck Norris character and movie names. Col James Braddock, Maj Scott McCoy, JJ McQuade, A Force of One, The Octagon, Good Guys Wear Black. I change my name alot.
I've been in one for three years now.
The first year was a standard NFL.com league with some friends. Then someone got the idea to turn it into a church fund raiser. So for the past two years we’ve had a 12 team keeper league. This year we’re doing a offline draft which should be pretty cool. I’ve made the playoffs two out of the three times and was runner-up last year thanks to three stud running backs.
I usually stick with the same name: Darkhorse, but I’m thinking about switching it up.
My best pick would have to be Turner last year. I think I got him in the 5th or 6th round.
I’m not sure who my worst would have been, but my biggest disappointment was Kellen Winslow last year.
Welcome to the site!
Offline drafts are the best, I’ve found. Lot of potential for trash talk, post-draft analysis and eating a ton of junk food. One of my favorite days of the year.

I've got a bit of a dilemma
Perhaps some of you would care to weigh on it.
I have the #2 overall pick, and I know Knowshon Moreno (ha!) is going first overall. My choices would seem to be either Beanie Wells or Michael Crabtree, who I could also potentially get if I moved down a couple spots.
Good running backs are always good to have, of course, but I do have Pierre Thomas and Maurice Jones-Drew. For receivers, I have Donnie Avery, Eddie Royal and Chris Cooley, so I clearly need help there. Which way would y’all go?

Punter
Every Championship team needs a Punter!
Seriously though, Crabtree would be my pick if given those same choices. I’m assuming that by you listing those as the only options, that these players possibly fill your biggest need. As such, I go with Crabtree. In this situation, my thinking would be that every year there always seems to be some unknown back-up quality RB that storms into the first half of the season and ends up being a stud, like Hightower last year, so if I’m looking to fill a third RB spot for the future, that’s what I’ll be looking for given this not-so-great choices of rookie RB’s this year. I think Crabtree is more than worth the risk given his play-making abilities, much like Calvin Johnson a couple of years ago.
Obviously, when looking to draft a rookie, you are playing the risk game because no one really knows how well a player will transition to the pro level. There’s not a single position where there hasn’t been major busts as well as major succeses. For every Peyton Manning, there is not only a Ryan Leaf, but also a Tom Brady or Matt Cassel. But personally, I would take Crabtree.
Well, the other choice would be move down several spots
And pick either Shonn Greene or Jeremy Maclin, someone like that. It’s a four round draft in a 12 team league, and only rookies and veterans who have never been drafted are eligible. With this weak draft class, I figured I’d stick near the top and take my chances there.

I agree with Jesse
you gotta go WR – Crabtree is going to be solid and the 49ers are going to utilize his talents quick. Your RB tandem already looks pretty sharp, this is going to be a great year for both of those guys and if one of them goes down, I’m sure you can find a hidden gem waiting in the FA that is going to have a breakout year.
know what you believe in and why you believe in it
I also have Ray Rice

I'm confused...
How many players do you keep in your league if you’re drafting rookie RBs that early?
by johnnybacardi on Jul 10, 2009 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions
20 per team
And everyone you don’t keep goes into the free agent pool. It’s a rookie and previously undrafted veteran only league, so you’re pulling in fifth or sixth round running backs by the end of it sometimes.

wow
The first league I was in, the one that ran 12 years, we kept 15 out of 20, cutting 5, and usually the draft was rookies and FAs, like yours. Everyone else I’ve encountered since acted like that was the worst thing in the world, so I’m a little surprised to see someone else doing it!
The league I’m in now, we keep 3 out of 15, and we still have people whining about keeping one or two, or even drafting from scratch every year. A plague on their houses!
by johnnybacardi on Jul 10, 2009 10:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly, I love it
It’s also scoring only, so there’s very little margin for error. You look at players in a way you never would in a more typical format. A guy like Jerious Norwood can be a valuable backup in a yardage league, but his scoring makes him a last guy off the bench type option in this league.
Maybe I’m just weird.

Jerry Rice
I might have mentioned this before, but remember that one year that Jerry Rice went to camp with the Broncos but retired before playing? He was in the player pool all year long for my league. The day after our season ended I picked him up so he could retire a member of my team. Like when players sign one day deals to do the same in real life.
Yes, I am a nerd.
In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.
It's the NFL off-season
And we’re on a football blog talking fantasy football. I think it’s safe to say we’re all nerds to some degree…
Hoo-hoy!
