Remember Joe Delaney

Was over at PFT and read that today marked the anniversary of the death of Joe Delaney.  For those of you who don't know he was a running back for the Chiefs back in the early 80's that died trying to save three kids from drowning even though he himself couldn't swim very well.

I remember he came to prominence when I first started really getting into pro football (around the age of 10).  I collected football cards and I remember how happy I was when I opened a pack to find his rookie card.  It's strange, I still remember exactly where I was when I heard the news of his passing.   Anyhow, I also bring this up because nowadays it seems like most NFL news you read it either the prima donna antics of disgruntled players who wine about everything while at the same time they are killing people while DUI or shooting themselves in the legs, etc.......

If you have the time, here is an article written by Frank Deford back in 1983.

I remember Joe Delaney

I tell the story of Joe Delaney everytime I’m in a discussion about people performing heroic feats.

His story deserves to be told

A true hero if there ever was. Of course his on the field potential can’t be overlooked. He only played two years. In his rookie year he only started 10 games or so and still gained almost 1200 yards on the ground and made it to the Pro Bowl as a rookie. I recall that his 82 yard run was the longest of the year.

In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.

Touching

It does a soul good to remember that people like Joe Delaney have trod on this earth. Thanks for posting, runningback.
