Christian Crushes the Competition
via photos.upi.com
Bob Christian's heart prevails. With nearly 60% of the votes, Christian easily takes the Greatest Falcons Fullback crown.
It's Monday again and you all know what that means. That's right, Falcohol sippers, it's time to nominate some more great Falcons! This time around, your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find a fantastic Falcon tight end. Good luck, fanatics. This blog post will self destruct in three days or when it's pushed off the front page, whichever comes first.
Rules? If we must...
- The Tight End must have been in Falcons colors at least three years.
- Tony G is not eligible, despite what your dreams at night tell you.
- I'm nominating Crumpler now in order to force you guys to dig deep.

sorry
im callin BS on that one. Hampton is the obvious best. I think that we are once again seeing a vote com down to who people have seen play and who is most current in your mind. I didnt think it was a popularity contest…

With ya on that one HF,.
I voted for Hampton because he was, statistically the best. Heart may matter in certain situations but in the long run, stats win out.
I told Dave that I think this greatest Falcons team will be 90% of the 1998 team simply because that’s the last “greatest” season we’ve had that qualifies (2008 being too recent).

Doesn't a poll = a popularity contest?
The simple fact that there is a poll means you are asking for people’s opinions, therefore it will always come down to a popularity contest. If you wanted to base it off of stats alone, then the answers to all positions already exist, just go grab the statistically best player at each position and list them as the all-time greatest Falcon team and stop asking us for our opinions.
My opinion is that Christian is the best fullback as I define that role. Hampton was a RB in every sense of the word. Strictly my opinion though so ymmv.

Where's the fun
without the debate? I’m a stats guy. But stats only take you so far. You guys are in control here. Christian won out, so he’s our FB. That’s the way this works. Majority opinion > my opinion, or anyone else’s

NEVAR!
I don’t hate your posts man, but you are just coming off a little bullish about the FB poll so I’m simply reciprocating. Though I will say there are a few things that would stoke the angst for eternity between us, namely your horrible choice in higher education, but I’m willing to set that aside for the Falcons sake, haha! I’ll wear red and black with you on Sundays brother, any other day you are dead to me.
THWG!

Props to him
From a pure educational view (which really is all that matters for most kids), they are both good schools, each having their strengths and weaknesses in varrying departments, so good luck to him regardless. He’ll look better when he graduates in white and gold though, just saying, haha!

There's no doubt Hampton was great
And I do love Hampton. I thought he should’ve at least garnered some consideration for RB, simply because he was a runner and belonged in a top five list of Falcon running backs.
That said, I really think Christian was a criminally underrated blocking fullback. Roles change, I know that, and Hampton was more of a complete package. There’s still very few fullbacks over the last two decades I’d rather entrust a running game to than Christian, who was also tough as nails. I firmly believe stats should decide most contests, but in this case I think it has a lot to do with how you’re going to view the role of fullback.
Just my two cents.

All I've ever known is Crump...
And he was a beast. Wish I could offer more insight.

re: sorry
Bob Christian was a true fullback—-blocker. Dave Hampton was more in the RB mode so of course his numbers would prove much better. Both played 4 years for the Falcons but please don’t compare stats when Hampton was given more opportunity to touch the ball. And of course the most recent players will receive more consideration and votes—-overall they were much better athletes.
Sorry to say but that applies to all sports——the athleticism overall of the newer generation exceeds that of the older generation.

Yeah,
Maybe the average athlete now is bigger/faster/stronger than past athletes, but one of the best ways to measure greatness is to see how good a player is compared to his peers. That is (one of the reasons) why Babe Ruth is probably still considered the best baseball player ever. For instance, here is his home run numbers and the runner-up in HRs from 1926-1928: 47-21, 60-47, and 54-31. That would be like Tom Brady (50 TDs to 36 for Romo) in ’07 (or Manning in ’04 or Marino in ’84), and doing it for three straight years (or more)! We can see how great the past players were by how much better they were than others playing at the same time, not necessarily by comparing them to current players.
And I’ll say it again – Fullbacks now are used as blockers first. But in the ‘70s (and before) they split carries with the Tailback, were involved in the passing game, and blocked. Just because that is how a FB is used now, doesn’t mean that is the definition of a “true” Fullback…

In my 30 years of watching the falcons..
I don’t remember any TE better than alge crumpler. I mean he was a multiple pro bowl selection, can any other tight end in falcons history boast that? When he was in his prime with Vick , Crump was the best TE in the nfl(other than gonzo) for a few years, and then came A. gates. I remember doing NFL drafts in the first half of this decade and if you didn’t get crump, gates or gonzo, then you didn’t have a TE that even mattered. Granted, crumps last season with ATL wasnt good at all, but the previous 5 years were all pro!!

The only others
That I see possibly challenging Crump are Jim Mitchell and Junior Miller. They both went to two Pro Bowls, and Mitchell is fairly close to Crump in stats (Miller was only a Falcon 4 years, but his per game stats are pretty similar).

Here's a name for you to chew on, gang.
OJ Santiago.
Yes, his numbers suck but compare him to his previous Falcon peers. orang3b will likely have those numbers in spades.

Are you calling me out?
Well, I’m there for ya… You’re right – Santiago’s numbers suck. But he does have one thing going for him: 1998.
I’ve got one for you to chew on, though – and the best I can tell, I’d take him ahead of Santiago: Arthur Cox.

Cox makes Santi look horrendous
Even if he isn’t the most prolific TE himself.

Falcon TE
My favorite TE was Jim Mitchell. During his 11 seasons as a Falcon he only played in two playoff games, 1978 at home against the Eagles (a win) and on the road against the Cowboys (a loss). He made a 1 yd reception for a touchdown with little or no time left on the clock to give the Falcons an improbable win over the Saints. On the play before Mitchell’s touchdown the Falcons were trailing the Saints 17-13 with just a few seconds left for one more play so “Big Ben Left” had been called. Bart unloaded one into the left corner of the endzone for an incompletion. But wait! Is that a yellow flag! YES!!! Defensive pass interference on the Saints CB. The ball was placed on the 1 yd line with no time on the clock. The Falcons lined up. Bart took the snap and with a brilliant playfake to Haskell Stanback let go of a throw with a bit of touch to Big Jim Mitchell who was all alone to the right in the endzone. TOUCHDOWN!!!! Falcons win preserving their first chance at a playoff spot in team history.

Junior Miller...
He was the fastest tight end I ever seen. And was a good blocker also. Just think if we had used him like TE’s are used now? He would be a beast!!!

I still say it’s crumpler though!!

C'mon, best TE was that Kelly kid Reeves traded a 1st rounder in the next draft for..!
Dan was right about him being the missing link! He successfully helped us move from NFC Champs back to chumps in 1 season…
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three.

While I agree with you on the need for research
I’m going to shaz a brick if Crumpler doesn’t win this next one. Mitchell and Miller are serious contenders, but it’s hard to find someone with the sustained success of Crumpler at this position.

Well
I wouldnt be mad if crump won, but I do think Mitchell deserves recognition as well. At the time he played he was one of the best there was at the position.

I agree
And I think Mitchell is going to be running the closest. I think you’re going to see a lot more players from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s when we get to the defensive side of the ball….
