Atlanta Falcon Position Battles: Strong Safety
If you know anything about me by now, you know that I love to decry predictions and then make my own. It's a sickness! Get me help!
While they're busy measuring the dose of tranquilizer it will take to bring me down, you might want to try projecting our starting strong safety this year. I'm going to put in even the most unlikely candidate, but the catch is that if you're picking a guy like Eric Brock, you've gotta comment and give a reason. I realize I can't hold you to that, but consider it the honor system and a good way to generate discussion. At the start of the season, we can take a look back and see how far off we were.
My guess is William Moore. Vote away!

Moore
If he stays healthy I believe that he will be a force in our secondary. If you watch tape from his junior season before he was hurt, he was fantastic. If we see that in Camp then without a doubt he will be starting next too (and learning from) Eric Coleman.

Moore
or DeCoud, with the edge going to Moore. Moore just seems like a guy who would be fun to watch. Someone who is going to fly to the ball and lay the smackdown on some poor WR or RB. I include Decoud because he has had a year in the system while it might take Moore a little while to learn the defense.
In Dimitroff we trust
Moore, he is a playmaker.
Nothing wrong with DeCoud, he is quality depth. I just don;t feel like he can beat out C4…

Dave:
I’m surprised you didn’t include a DeCoud/C4 platoon option in the poll. If we’re talking long-term, I think Moore is our guy. But given his occasional struggles in coverage, I could see a DeCoud (on passing downs)/C4 (on running downs) platoon in the works.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.
When you're right, you're right
That option should’ve been in there. I think it’s safe to assume that we’ll see some of the top two candidates no matter what.
safety
I think Moore, but DeCoud was the fifth rated safety (Kiper) and ran a 4.48 forty at the combine in 2008. Reputation out of college was good cover and good hitter but maybe not absolute top end speed. So if I am DeCoud, this is a real big year for me. Obviously, DT/MS felt they needed more back there than they had. DeCoud kind of disappeared in 2008. I think that maybe long term, they are thinking Moore strong and DeCoud free?
My thinking exactly
Together, they’d make ONE perfectly well-rounded safety. Since we can’t meld them together, put them both back there and let them teach each other. I think they may develop into an elite tandem one day.
yet again another ditto
but moore is just about for sure at strong because he plays the reciever more than the ball which would mean he probabley wont be a ed reed pic city hreat but more of a ray polamalu (if thats how you spell it) saftey hit first go fo the pic second but i have absolutly no problem with that and deCoud he is wait ing for his chance to shine and has promise to be a probowl saftey
Moore
Yesterday I was looking at a couple things, and I noticed that DeCoud was listed as the 2nd string Free Safety on the Depth Chart at the Official Site. Does this mean anything? Probably not – I just thought it was interesting…
Coleman's rock solid
But it’s not illogical to think that DeCoud will be groomed for that position. He would seem to be a better fit at FS than William Moore for the long-term.
TD said
that in our scheme that ideally the safeties could be interchangible. So im thinking that FS and SS depth charts could just read Safety.
In the future im seeing DeCoud and Moore back there manning the spots for us…

what about this crazy idea
What about moore at FS and DeCoud at SS. have both our young up and coming guys back there. brining more speed and playmakeing abilities. cause someone up there said moore has some playmaking abilities. For me im not to sold on him yet. but just throwing that idea out there

The Scope
William Moore will be the starting SS, maybe not Day 1, but he will be. He’s a definite NFL starter, no question. The issue is FS. Eventhough Coleman is there and is doing a good job, he is not my ideal starting FS. I would put Thomas DeCoud at FS. He is extremely good in space. At 6’ 2" nearly 200 lbs, he’s not afraid to lay the hit. A good tackler and he played all DB positions and Special Teams in college. This is his 2nd yr in the same defense. If he adds about 5-10lbs, look out Ronnie Lott! LOL!
Situational
I think that Moore and Decoud will rotate based on various situations. Moore will probably be in more often on teams that are big running threats like Carolina, but Decoud may get slightly more time against teams like N.O. Of course, Moore did show some coverage skills his Jr. year. Still, I think the D focus is going to be on trying to get QB pressure from the front four, especially the ends, and the SS will be up in the box frequently to help with run support and coverage on TE’s/ Backs given our youth at the LB position. I imagine the majority of deep coverage is going to fall on the corners and Coleman. Otherwise we may have to play more nickel and get an extra corner on the field.
Strengthening the middle
William Moore, Eric Coleman, and Thomas Decoud will all be in the scheme that allows the Defense to step-up this 09 season. The importance of this is evident by our GM/head coach’s direction. With Babineaux’s strength showing up last season at DT and Curtis Lofton as our shining Anchor at M LB in place, we bring in Peria Jerry to solidify the other D tackle spot and the above mentioned trio; the safeties gives us a real chance to make The Wall! Taking care of business at these spots then allows the ends, OLB’s , and corners to become the real Hunters; and that is what we’ll remember .
