Who will be the Falcons 53 Man Roster?
I'll have my entry in a couple of days, I'm going to take my time. I expect everyone to give this a try. You can give reasons Why? or Maybe Which was the hardest player to cut. Have fun with this. I think it's going to come down to how many CB's we need, if we need 5 TE's, having 5 RT's, having 9 WR's, and having 5 RB's. I also think we should keep the bulk of our Defensive Lineman and most of the Line Backers

well ...
I couldn’t drop the last three. So, more or less, I think he’ll be one of the last three cut (I dig my bold predictions). But, consider this: he was three-time All Big 12, he excels vs. the run, he’s known for his efficient/disciplined play, Gilbert ain’t all that and a bag of chips, Adkins is VERY raw, and Vishnu told me so.
So THERE!

I almost agree...except this is a 56 man roster...and...
Only change would be at DB where I expect Middlebury to beat out Irons Take off Snelling, James, and Butterworth. I think Bobino gets dropped if we can find a b/u FB…

I agree ...
re: Snelling and Butterworth. But I’m not ready to write off James, and I think there’s a distinct possibility that both Irons and Middleton are cut.

just move snellings to fullback
he has did nothing to sa he shouldn’t make the team

Not over Brown.
TB has been impressive during the spring, and would have made the team over Snelling if he had not got hurt…

my opinion
is that Kelly will beat out Weems for that roster spot.
also, I hope that you didn’t list the names in order of where they would start. I really think Jerry will start over Lewis. We didn’t pick him with our first pick to play backup.
Other than that, it seems like a very likely roster IMO. I think the CB corps is going to be the most debated… I like who you chose for it, I don’t think Middleton will be making the roster this year.

I like Kelly, but I really doubt he beats out Weems. The 5th WR spot is more than getting 5-10 receptions, and Weems has shown he can do different things. The staff and players like him, so I think he is safe for the season.
Yeah, I have Lewis starting over Jerry. Starting doesn’t mean he gets the most playing time though. If Lewis can get back to what he showed us in 2007-08, then he will most likely get the starting spot. IMO, Jerry is more valuable coming in for certain downs.

My stab at it…
I’m trying to squeeze most/all the draft picks onto the active roster – the only one that’s really going to have trouble (in my mind) is Middleton. And maybe Adkins, I guess – I feel like we have about 10 MLB’s and 3 OLB’s right now.
Offense (25)
QB (3): Matt Ryan, Redman, Shockley
RB (4): Turner, Norwood, Snelling, Ovie Mughelli
TE (3): Tony G, Hartsock, Peelle
WR (5): Roddy, Jenkins, Harry Douglas, Finneran, Kelly
OL (10): Baker, Blalock, McClure, Dahl, Clabo, Ben Wilkerson, Brett Romberg, Garrett Reynolds, Ojinnaka, Renardo Foster
Defense (25)
DE (5): Abraham, Jamaal Anderson, Chauncey, Sid, Biermann
DT (5): Babineaux, Peria Jerry, Trey Lewis, Vance Walker, Jason Jefferson
LB (6): Lofton, Peterson, Stephen Nicholas, Wire, Tony Gilbert, Robert James
CB (5): Houston, Chevis, Grimes, Owens, Middleton
S (4): Coleman, Moore, DeCoud, Fudge
Special Teams (3)
K (1): Elam
P (1): Koenen
LS (1): Schnek
Hardest Decisions:
A. Offensive Line – Interior Line is plenty covered: 3 can play center, 6 could play guard, but I felt like I needed another possible OT backup… That’s why I have Foster over Alex Stepanovich. I’m also figuring Butterworth and Stancheck on the practice squad.
B. Snelling over Thomas Brown
C. Linebackers – I have no idea past the top 4. I gave Tony Gilbert the nod over Edmond Miles (back-up MLB, special teams ace). I’m not crazy about Robert James, but I can’t give that spot to an UDFA. I think we’ll have 1-2 LB’s on the practice squad (Adkins, Bobino, ?)
D. Cornerbacks – I guess if they think they could sneak Middleton onto the practice squad, they could keep Hutchins (he is versatile enough to play CB or some FS). But I’m not sure they’d want to keep him at, what $1.5M, to be the #5 CB (that is not originally my idea – but I agree with that thinking; check the link). I’ve not really seen any evidence that they’re in love with Irons – actually, I think the opposite may be true.
E. WR – I am really, really rooting for Aaron Kelly to make the team. I’m just not sure if that’s what will really happen… In this scenario, I’d have Weems or Chandler Williams on the practice squad.

great predictions
and well thought out too… I never even thought about that idea with Von Hutchins – ‘cause that’s the only place I would have been able to argue with you. I think TD and Smitty are going to try to play their picks versus the old team anyways (not that it would have been done intentionally like that, but they do have a way of picking players late in the draft).
I agree with you on Kelly also… I really liked that kid at mini-camp and I would like to see him make the roster this year.

a few things
david irons charactor will keep him on the team
jason snellings will be back up full back
decoud will start a free saftey
and i think coy wire will start
by mistab50 on May 26, 2009 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well i'm not Convinced with everything you had to say.
David Irons maybe cause he practices hard and cause the rookie’s hurt.
Jason Snellings I agree will possibly be a back-up for Ovie Mughelli.
No way will Thomas DeCoud start over Eric Coleman cause in last season he was one of the top tacklers on the Falcons defense.
Thomas DeCoud and William Moore will battle out for the SS position and I’ve been hearing Moore has the advantage.
With Coy Wire you just might be right he’s got experience and size on Robert James.

Verron Haynes
Is not eligible for the practice squad (if I understand the rules correctly).

To: Dave the Falconer
I’m interested in who you think will make the 53 man roster. Cause I’m sure you’ll give good reasons for why they make the roster or why they don’t make the roster in your eyes. I’ve gotten good responses from everyone. I just want to say thanks to everyone that participated and (All Atlanta Falcon Fans) try to get more Falcon fans involved in this blog.

I'm about a week behind
Hopefully I’ll get to this before the weekend’s out. I definitely have a rough roster in mind, and thanks for great content. Everyone should be recommending this post.
