Happy Memorial Day, Falcoholics
It's a holiday today, which means many of you are likely to be striking out for family events, BBQs and the great outdoors in general. I actually have the day off myself, so I'll be checking in to see what discussion ensues here.
Feel free to use this thread for anything Falcons, anything holiday or anything site-related. Enjoy the day, fellow Falcoholics!

I wanted to ...
throw a shout out to all the vet/active service bloggers.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.
you all...
are awesome. I’m glad I can be apart of this community. I do love it here
I’m just curious though, I know that Jesse is ex-marine and I think most everyone knows I’m still active army, but who else in this community has spent time in the service?

Thanks!
And MIA, if you ever call me an “EX” Marine again, you will not be welcome in my home! There is no such thing as an Ex Marine, there are only legalized killing machines or non-legalized killing machines, but we are all Marines.
Ok, you’ll still be welcome in my home as a fellow Falcoholic and vet, but there will be loads of Army jokes thrown your way. And maybe a flaming brat.

hahaha
I knew that’d get you going! I get the same reaction out of my uncle and he served back in Vietnam.
Good stuff though… semper fidelis, right? That would be the extent of your ability to speak Latin, wouldn’t it? Or wait… did I just teach you something? Yeah… semper fidelis is “always faithful” in Latin. Careful… you know too much now, will the Marines still accept you?

Well played sir
No, we let the failures join the Army so we can use them as a distraction while we do the real work.

Also
I think its quite sad that the men and women serving this country, and the military in general, gets so little attention, most of which are stories covering the small percentage of bad news. You always here of the guy who came homefrom war and shot his wife, or the young kid who made some really bad decisions involving the locals where he was stationed, but rarely do you ever hear the stories of the kids, and they are almost all kids, who give their lifes saving their unit or trying to protect some non-combatants from being ruthlessly murdered.
I mean seriously, go down the street and ask ten people if they even know what the Medal of Honor is or how one gets awarded it. I’m willing to bet that most will answer that its a video game, if they answer at all. It’s really sad. I think the American population has generally forgotten what these people do every single day to make sure the benfits of freedom exists.
Now, I’m not going to take us down some political debate, but I just would like to ask everyone here to take the time to find a story on one one of these service members and maybe get a different perspective on what they gave up for you. If you feel like doing a little more, go to Wal-Mart and buy some toothbrushes, toothepaste, or soap, and take it down to your local VA’s office or recruiting station and have it sent overseas. Ask anyone in the military who has served in a combat zone, they will tell you that those things are often in short supply or not at all.

not at all is more like it
any kind of luxury from America is more than welcomed out there. Soldiers are forced to live with the Iraqi culture which is very different from ours. They are very filthy people that consider a weekly dip in the Euphrates a bath. They use their hand and a bottle of water for toilet paper. Their eating utensils are their hands… now I’m not trying to downplay these people, this is their culture and it has continued to function for them. However, Americans have adapted to a much more luxurious way of life which is hard to come by out there.
Soldiers are normally well provided with toilet paper and eating utensils, however, most hygeine products are often in short supply. Any kind of American treat is more than welcomed (assuming it isn’t something that would melt in a 150 degree climate while the soldier waits to get it).
Donating to soldiers is a very easy process too. Perhaps the easiest way is to take items to a local recruiting station and they will be able to inform you of the unit with the greatest need, if not ship it for you.
I’ve already served my tour out in Iraq and I have no intention of going back. There are still over 100,000 troops out there away from their families that rely on the support of people back home to keep them going when everything seems meaningless.

Well,
It may just be that I’m so out of the loop that I haven’t heard this before – but this past holiday weekend I saw (on Mike Huckabee’s show) the re-telling of the story of the Navy SEAL who fell on a grenade to save others. He was also posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
Yeah
That’s typically the most common way of “earning” that award, unfortunately. Here’s raising one for all of those who fell defending those who couldn’t defend themselves!
