A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Your Rookie MVP

I like to keep these discussions focused, so I'll cut right to the chase.

Who do you think is going to be the best Falcon rookie this year, and the best rookie in the NFL? Back up your arguments with facts or, if you prefer, a series of unintelligeble ramblings.

And...go!

It'll be a season-long battle between

Jerry and Moore. I see Moore ending up with the most impact at the end of the season.

As far as Rook MVP in the NFL? Probably either Sanchez or Stafford. I’m leaning towards Stafford because the Lions are at the bottom-most position. They only have one direction to go.

I agree on C4 and Jerry

I think Jerry has the ability to be the more productive of the two while Moore will have the chance to be a playmaker, forcing fumbles and intercepting the ball.

For the rookie of the year I would go with either Sanchez or Wells. If Wells can give the Cards any resemblance of a running game and help them get back to the playoffs I think he will have a good chance. I could see Sanchez winning it if he does just enough to not loose games for the Jets because they already have a good team.

I believe the Falcons rookie of the year will be William Moore. I think Jerry has a good season, but I think his statistics might not look as sexy as Moore’s at the end of the season.

For NFL Offensive ROY, I’ll be a homer and go Knowshon Moreno. I just think Moreno is a heck of a football player and will make it happen wherever he goes. Also, I don’t believe Stafford and Sanchez will even be mentioned in this vote. Mark Sanchez is the most over hyped player in the history of football right now. I just don’t understand how you go from a top 10 pick to the greatest QB in NFL history in just a few minutes.

For NFL Defensive ROY, I’ll go with Aaron Curry. Curry only because it would be stupid not to.

I agree... for the most part

I stated below, Jerry is going to make Moore shine and isn’t going to catch as much glamour on the highlights (though, 8 sacks would be enough to make me drool on myself). Or even two games where he has multiple sacks… oh… the possibilities.

You are probably right about Knowshon… and that isn’t even me being a homer. The Broncos lack a prolific passing game now and they are going to depend on their running game to make up for it. The guy is going to have lots of opportunities and I just don’t forsee it going to a QB this year. Sanchez and Stafford both seem to have a lot of growing to do. I don’t forsee Freeman being a starter any time soon… though I hope he is… he’ll be fun to watch the Falcons eat alive twice this year.l

Defensive ROY and the most positively talked about rookie of this season is going to be Aaron Curry. He will probably see 110 tackles and I wouldn’t be suprised if he has 6-8 interceptions.

The problem with the "Moreno" argument

Denver has somewhere around 347,823 running backs on the roster. Judging from Josh McDaniels’ analysis of his team’s talent (you know, where he concluded their incumbent Pro Bowl quarterback wasn’t good enough for them), there’s no telling who is going to get the ball in Denver. There’s definitely not enough carries to go around to compile the ridiculous stats necessary to win a MVP trophy.

you make a fair point

I’m just thinking this years offensive ROY is going to be a RB – even if it isn’t Moreno

Going with Moore

I hope Jerry will be great, but D-Line appears to have the steepest learning curve in the NFL. It’s been awhile since there was any real impact rookie DT or DE in the NFL (see the production of last year’s top 10 picks).

I’m going with the AP ROY awards as well:
Offensive ROY: I put the geek hat on and looked it up. In the superbowl era, it’s been a RB 3 out of every 4 years. I’m going with Donald Brown – the Colts may look to run more having fewer star receivers now and 2 good young RBs. Brown looks perfect for them.
Defensive ROY: Yeah, Curry is as good a bet as any.
BTW – great blog!

I go with Jerry.

DT are the soul of this D, and last year our depth was horrible. Having Jerry there, and getting Lewis back is huge for us. So I go with Jerry…

it's gonna be a tough call

I’m thinking Jerry’s impact is going to make Moore shine. Forcing his way up the middle and making QBs make terrible decisions that Moore is going to eat alive. All you’ll see on the highlight reel is Moore coming up for an interception and running it down the field 20+ yards. Jerry will probably hardly get mentioned until film gets watched much later, but it won’t be enough for him to earn the title.

Depends, if he gets >2 sacks this year, he'll get plenty of notice...

As a Falcon it will prolly be Moore.. I think Offensive rookie of the year will be Knoshawn Moreno, and defensive rookie of the year will prolly be curry..

can't argue

C4 just has the feel like he’s gonna be the “man” maybe not stat wise this year but enough to our ROY
Off ROY i’m gonna go out on a limb and say Hakeem Nicks i loved this kid at NC and think he makes the transition to the NFL
Def ROY Brian Orakpo i like anybody on the same line as Albert
feel free to call me crazy

hmmm

I’ll go with Moore, for many of the same reasons as above: little impact for most rookie DT’s, higher visibility/stats for Safety.

Offensive ROY: Beanie Wells – by default. Hightower sucks, and Edge is gone. If Wells gets hurt, they’re going to have ZERO running game (again). I think Crabtree might be my #2 choice. Unless he can’t handle the transition from spread offense to pro-style, he should be their best WR from day 1. I don’t think any of the 3 QB’s will have an impact this year (I doubt any of them will start week 1 – maybe Sanchez…). And I don’t think Knowshon will get enough chances to make a huge impact. They have about 14 RB’s on the roster now, and the Pats split the carries up nicely last year (I know some of that was because of injury, though). McDaniels also loves to spread it out and throw the ball around (and he has good WRs in Marshall & Royal) – not that Arizona won’t be throwing it a lot, too…

Defensive ROY: Curry has to be the favorite, but they have 2 other very good LB’s (and I think he’s gonna play weakside, so he might not get the tackle stats the Mike will, or the sacks that the Sam should), so I’ll go a little off the board and say Brian Cushing. If Houston gets to the playoffs (and they’ve got a good shot) and he puts up decent #s, he’ll get some votes… #2 I’ll go with Malcolm Jenkins – I think he’s going to be very good. My super dark-horse would be Louis Delmas – stories from Lion’s mini-camp/OTA’s make it seem like he is Superman (and a leader on their defense already). I think Aaron Maybin won’t have too much of an impact this year – and even if he does, nobody pays attention to what happens in Buffalo anyway.

my take

I think the ROY for the Falcons will be Sidbury. I think he is going to take over JA starting spot and put up decent numbers because he is smarter and faster. This probably mean it will be Moore just because I picked Sidbury, but I like being different so w/e.

As for the NFL, offensively I think I’ll go with Sanchez just because he’s already on a team with all the pieces ready for a deep playoff run, putting him in the best position to succeed. I thought the Jets had one of the best drafts this year also. Defensively I’m going with Orakpo.

Sidbury is not big enough to play SDE.

He doesn’t have the size to take on and shed the block for strong side runs…

Personal pick is also Moore

I have a feeling he’s going to put up gobs of tackles and be surprisingly effective in coverage, which will be enough to get him the notice he needs.

ill go with moore are dbs were horrible last season 4 team ints thats bad if he is average he will win it

by mistab50 on May 24, 2009 7:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

what ever happened to poo?

I know him and Dave weren’t able to make it to the public mini-camp, but I was looking for them both.

for prediction’s sake, aren’t they both still valid candidates for defensive ROY?
