A little discussion maybe?
I do not want to dwell in the past. In fact, I am firmly focused on the future. But with the draft over and done with, and the regular season a full summer away I started missing football. So, as I was checking the Atlanta Falcons home page I came across a video interview with Harry Douglas.
The first thing that struck me was that he is very well spoken and totally in step with the party line. One of the things that they spoke of was his role on Special teams, which was crucial following the release of Mr. Indecision Jennings. Just a reminder of the difference between the two (like you need a reminder), take a look at what HD does when he returns a punt.
Any thoughts on special teams? Does Norwood still return Kicks? Does HD? How about Thomas Brown? The blog has seemed a little down over the past couple days. Just trying to get the juices flowing again.

My apologies, it has been a long day.

just so you know
you can click the little button under your post that says “edit” and you can fix any typos… I don’t know why you can’t do this on comments, but you can do this on the topics you create.

yes
The no editing of my own comments is highly irritating.

My vote: More HD in HD!
Harry Douglas should definitely be back there returning kicks and punts while continuing to grow as a WR. I’m not opposed to Brown in the backfield with HD on KR, one on either side. Norwood has done a good job in the past, but I think he no longer needs to do it now that we have two viable options in HD and Brown.

Thomas Brown
I would love to see TB get a shot at this role. I think he would do a really good job. Harry is ok too, but I think TB would be really good.

i dont know who we could use to do it,
but i think JN and HD are due to become too vital of options from scrimmage to exercise their talents of special teams.
not to say special teams are less important, obviously, but i think the reason JN wasnt full speed last season, and more dominant than he was, was the beating he took on returns. HD should make a name for himself this year at reciever.
but i have heard the clemson kid has experience returning, my fear is he doesnt have speed for that. maybe bergeron (?) the indoor football player could fill this roll.
one of the falcons strong points in recent years, and a saving grace, has been return men (JN, and praise be to Allen Rossum may he live forever) so it is key, but i just dont think we can expend these players energy here anymore. thoughts?

Norwood
Honestly, I like seeing Norwood lined up to return kicks. While I do worry that he could get banged up I think that it is vital to have the best player back there who isn’t irreplacable. For instance, if they lined Roddy up back there I would think they were crazy. Norwood came 4 yards short of returning one for a TD last year, and had a number of very good returns. No he isn’t as good as say Reggie Bush or Devin Hester, but there still is talent. I was hoping to see us draft a return specialist, but alas no such thing happened.
Concerning HD, I think he will develop into his roll as a PR to complement his ability out of the slot. He is just too explosive not to put on the field in a situation like a PR. The picture above is when he got caught by the punter. He almost broke 2 returns for a TD in that game. If a player has that kind of game changing ability I’d rather have him on the field as much as possible.

Harry
While Thomas is a solid return guy, Harry is electrifying. He has the ability to return any kick all the way, something that Brown won’t do.

How do you objectively quantify something like that? I’m not a huge GA fan, but I really like what Brown brings to the table. I mean, at the very least, I think it’ll be a good competition (i.e., even if Brown is cut). Then again, maybe the coaching staff will want to split the returning duties between the two.

Harry is electrifying?
Bold comment. I dont see it. I think he is slightly above avg at best. I still think Brown could beat him out as the return guy if given the chance.

I probably agree
But I think the coaches might disagree. 39 Targets in the passing game, 12 Runs, plus Punt Returns. They were clearly trying to get him the ball (as a rookie). I think that will continue this season…

Gotta go with 3b
Not sure if electrifying is the right word though. He was certainly productive when given the chance. He has good speed and quickness. On the end around for a TD he had help from a great block by Eric Weems, but on some of his punt returns and long catches he just out runs everybody else.

Let's hope that Brown can stay healthy
Then we’ll have a great “problem” – which of 3 talented return men do we put back there? Those are the types of problems I like as opposed to having to resort to Adam Jennings back there.
I am glad we didn’t use a draft pick on a return specialist. We don’t need to draft what we already have on our roster. We can always bring back Noriaki Kinoshita to return kicks if need be. I wanted to see that guy make the team anyway.
