According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, that might just be the case.

Hmm

While I don’t necessarily oppose them moving somewhere else, I don’t think the Georgia Dome has exactly run its due course yet. Is a dispute about leasing and management really that big of a deal to force the team to want out? Why not just buy the rights to all of that straight from GWCC? That seems like it would save any and all that would be involved with building a new staduim a ton of money, and in this economy Blank would be wrong to not consider that option.

I'm confused

DLed says that Blank wants the home games played downtown, but none of the “proposed sites” are downtown.

Last night

I was thinking about this after I posted and last night I realized that this may simply be a strong-armed move to force the GWCCA to renegotiate the current leasing & management contract. If the Falcons leave the Dome, there is no way the GWCCA could sustain a profitable revenue stream. I have to imagine that the Falcons represent more than 80% of the incoming revenue to the Dome so why would they jeopardize that by playing hardblaa with Blank? I sure hope they don’t think that concerts, motocross, and monster truck rallies are going to be enough to not only break even with operating costs, but also make a profit for them.

I agree that Blank should look at all options, and doing so well ahead of time is a very responsible move on his part. Also, I think that statement meant Blank wants to keep the games at the Dome downtown, but that he is just considering all other possibilities in case he can’t work things out with the GWCCA.

Makes sense ...

I love the Dome, heck I liked it when it was pink and purple. The “noise factor” alone makes it an attractive venue. If/when we do relocate, I hope it is to another closed stadium.

ya know

I absolutely love the Dome. I like its design and layout. It’s unique and as huge as it is, it definitely holds its own downtown amongst everything else. But, as much as I like the dome, I love Bobby Dodd stadium ten times more for football, with its open-end design and beautiful downtown skyline views. If I had to choose, I would hope that Blank would embrace the city in that way, building us a large open-air and open-ended stadium that provided all seats with a nice view of the downtown skyline.

Of course, that’s all personal preference.

um sorta with ya

I am almost with you, except that I think a retractable roof is a much better idea. I used to go to the games at Atlanta – Fulton county stadium and it sucked most of the time becuase of weather conditions. Especially later in the season. I pay too much to sit outside in the pouring rain and in the freezing cold. On nice days though I would love to have the open air stadium.

I'm definitely down...

…with a retractable roof. I went to some games at Fulton also, but it’s issue was that it was a baseball stadium first and it always felt wrong. The retractable roof option gives you the best of both worlds.

I reported on this a little while back.

Personally, I’d rather just rennovate the dome again (as if it needs it). It’s nice, air conditioned, and allows the crowd to get more involved (increased crowd volume).
