Around SBN: Sean Keeley's Week 12 College Football Buffet

With literally a million cornerbacks on the roster, many of you may wonder why I'm even bringing this up. Roderick Hood is a pretty talented corner whose production suffered last year, but he could be worth a flier if the Falcons aren't happy with what they've got. I'd guess they are, but I'm no mind reader.

Your thoughts?

well

looking at his production based on game by game stats (NFL.com) – it looks like the only productive year he had was 2007 (this is after 7 seasons in the NFL).

2008 would have been a good year to guage his true talent too, with the amount of time the Cardinal’s defense spent time on the field (the team was only 9-7).

I do like his size, but even with his veteran presence, I don’t think the Falcons will see him as a need. I don’t think I really care whether or not we make this aquisition.

I'm inclined to think we don't need him

But I did want to put it out there for discussion.

Depends on how many corners we carry ...

We have the cap room. Heck, he’s a better option than Hutchins.

Something like this would work:
Houston
Jackson
Owens
Hood
Middleton/Grimes

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

I dont think we need him, I mean if TD is going to look for a veteran CB, then maybe look into Chris McCalister ex raven. He is golden compare to R. Hood.. But again I dont think falcons are going to make anymore free agent moves. Although I wouldnt mind signing Larry Foote.. But besides him or McCalister, i dont think we have any more needs, for now..

haha

Verron Hayes is from my home town up in good ol’ Woodstock, GA.

I wonder why we signed him.

Not sure ...

I mean, 30 yr old back up RBs who haven’t played football for a year aren’t generally very helpful. Nonetheless, I fanposted it (but maybe Dave thinks it isn’t fanpost worthy … ‘cause I’m getting no front page love).

No front page for you!

Kidding, I was at a propane tank fire simulation. I’ll get it up now.

propane tank fire simulation

I’m not even going to ask … but I like how you threw it out there casually. As in, “I just got home from the grocery store.”

Bunch of firefighters practicing fighting a propane fire

Fireballs shooting 30 feet in the air. It was, in a word, awesome.

Are you the real Hank Hill?

Well,

He generally show up near the top in Football Outsider’s DB Game Charting #‘s (success %, Yards per Attempt against), but he is also usually ends up near the top in Targets too (teams don’t really respect him). I’d feel more confident in him that any of our CB’s except maybe Houston. But with all those young guys, I’m sure TD wants to get them out on the field…

Also, his cap # in 06 and 07 was ~$1.5M, but last year it was ~$5M. I’d think it would take about $3-4M per year to land him. I doubt they want to make that kind of investment for what they would probably feel is a Nickle defender – or at best a stop-gap for young guys…

Bingo

For the money, it’s not worth it.

I also happen to love Football Outsiders, and he grades out pretty well, but I suspect part of that is the anemic offensive state of the NFC West. Who else, other than the team he is on, is at an above-average level of throwing the football?

I don’t think we need him, unless it was for incredibly cheap (and even then he’d be an “in case” guy, and that’s not going to happen.

Well,

in 2007 he performed much better than Arizona’s other CBs (Eric Green and Antrel Rolle – I can’t find ’08 #s), and he usually graded out pretty well in Philly, too…

But I agree – it’s probably not gonna happen. I think he’d want a starting spot (and starter’s $$), and I doubt that’s an option here.

Have to agree

The Falcons are throwing young spaghetti at the cornerbacking wall and seeing if it sticks. Clearly Chevis Jackson is going to, but beyond that they don’t seem willing to cede any spots.
