The Falcoholic's 2009 NFL Draft Live Blog, Second Round

And we're back! The first day thread was starting to chug a little, so consider this your new thread for all things second round.

While you're here, start weighing in on who you think will be available for the Falcons in the second round. I don't know about you, but I'm starting to get nervous that we're going to find ourselves in no-man's land once more, with most of the best players in the second round off the board again.

At any rate, this is a glorious day. Raise a glass to Peria Jerry and follow me to freedom!

Star-divide

9:55 p.m.: With the last pick in the second round, the Broncos pick TE Richard Quinn. Very good blocker who isn't great at catching the ball, which makes him kind of a weird pick in the second.

It was a great first day of the draft for the Falcons, and I'll see you all back here as often as possible for tomorrow's action. I'll have a scouting report on William Moore up shortly, so be sure to weigh in.

9:48 p.m.: Cody Brown, a defensive end from Connecticut, is the pick here. They're telling me a talented kid, and he's got the numbers, but I'd have to watch tape to really tell you a lot about him. There have been some real surprises in the second round.

9:46 p.m.: There goes yet another pick in our little mock draft exercise. The Titans reach a bit for Sen'Derrick Marks, the sometimes unmotivated defensive tackle out of Auburn.

9:41 p.m.: Sean Smith is a steal for the Dolphins, and I am sweating my ass off. That is it.

9:38 p.m.: The Giants continue a very good draft (bastards stole Sintim!) by taking tackle William Beatty, an athletic left tackle out of Connecticut. Gotta give them props.

9:30 p.m.: Our detestable rivals in Carolina make another quality pick, with safety/cornerback Sherrod Martin. He may be able to step in as starter early on unless his nagging injuries catch up.

9:25 p.m.: Next up, the Patriots continue a very good draft by picking up huge offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer. I'm a little surprised to see him go this early, but he fits well with their offensive line.

9:24 p.m.: The Ravens pick up Paul Kruger, who in addition to slashing your face off will also tackle your quarterback. Nice pickup for a team that alreayd had a very good defense.

9:19 p.m.: The Colts pick up Fili Moala at defensive tackle, which is a very solid pick. Lot of USC players in this draft.

9:12 p.m.: The Falcons select S William Moore, who is pretty much the best value still available at this point. Well-rounded safety who will compete with DeCoud to start and will likely be a starter at one of our two spots within a year or two. Very happy with this pick!

9:10 p.m.: Who is this guy? And why is he picking Phil Loadholt, who is awesome? Damn him. The Falcons are ON THE CLOCK!

9:07 p.m.: The Iggles pick running back LeSean McCoy, who is an excellent fit for their offense. Please, everyone pick offense so the Falcons can get who they want.

9:03 p.m.: David Veikune, potential outside linebacker and defensive end, goes to the Browns. We're getting to the point where I have legitimately never heard of some of these guys.

9:01 p.m.: The Bills pick Andy Levitra, who will definitely give them a surging lift. Oh, wait, his name is Levitre. My bad.

8:59 p.m.: I think the Dallas Cowboys just missed their pick. I think those were just mannequins in their draft room, honestly.

8:54 p.m.: Seattle picks Max Unger at center, which is a very solid pick, while some other team goes with some other guy with a really long name. I'm sorry, I was looking for more beer.

8:47 p.m.: Speaking of insane, the Broncos go with safety Darcel McBath. I think I speak for everyone here when I say "what....the...hell?"

8:43 p.m.: Al Davis is certifiably insane. Michael Mitchell? He sounds like he should be doing my taxes or mixing my drinks, not playing safety in the NFL.

8:41 p.m.: If I see this commercial where the dude with the face the size of a dinner platter tells me steroids are as American as apple pie, I'm going to go into a roid rage and break my brother's face. Or, you know, have another drink.

8:33 p.m.: Clint Sintim goes to the Giants, and I'm pissed. I will survive, but this is the official mancrush of The Falcoholic. I...I need a moment to grieve.

8:30 p.m.: GREAT pick for the Dolphins here. Pat White will fit in perfectly in the Wildcat, and the Dolphins are a dynamic offensive team. They're not going to be a lot of fun to play, that's for sure.

8:24 p.m.: Our earnest foes, the Carolina Panthers, got a truly awesome value in Everette Brown. He should've been picked in the 20s but made it all the way to 43. Incredible value, and I don't like it because of it.

8:17 p.m.: The Bills select CB Jairus Byrd, which is a very interesting pick. Love the name, too. Not sure he was the best CB on the board, though.

8:13 p.m.: And the Patriots follow up with CB Darius Butler. The Patriots are re-inventing the defense, so I gotta give them props. Their secondary has been a weakness for years.

8:10 p.m.: Welcome back, guys! The Patriots pick is in, and it is....DT Ron Brace! Very good choice there, as he's a run clogger, but I was nervous they'd go Sintim. He survives for another pick.

Ron Brace

Did the Pats really need a DT?

by Pack Man on Apr 25, 2009 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

Haha

Well, they’re secondary struggled last year didn’t it? But you’re right, they’ve been among the best teams forever now.

You can take our Raji ...

BUT YOU’LL NEVER TAKE OUR JEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYYYY!

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

But they’ll never kick our freedom!

well played, sir... well played...

Patriots are solid

most of these guys are going to grow before they start… I fear that team

by MentallyMIA on Apr 25, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

yeah..

hopefully our offense won’t have to see their new rookies this new season

by MentallyMIA on Apr 25, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Dave who did you want again?

New Orleans Hornets: The most inconsistent team in the NBA.

by Grayson on Apr 25, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

Clint Sintim

Every pick that goes by where he’s still there, I get more excited. I can’t imagine TD passing him up if he’s still on the board.

by Dave Choate on Apr 25, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

I have an eery feeling that a certain S from Missouri is going to be a Falcon ...

He's a real option, too

I think either he or Sintim is going to make it there, and I’d be more than happy with either/both.

that was a pretty good call….

by Dave Choate on Apr 25, 2009 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree completely

Elite PR TE or super Safety… no inbetween for me.

For Franky… I guess I’ll settle for a super OT too… but …. yeah

I know

I’m alive and well. I wish him well in New York, but I hope he gets zero tackles every time he plays for the Falcons for the rest of his life.

by Dave Choate on Apr 25, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

there goes sintim

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Just kidding.

by Pack Man on Apr 25, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

I'll survive

but it’s gonna take a lot of effort at this point

by MentallyMIA on Apr 25, 2009 8:33 PM EDT reply actions

Too bad though

I think it would’ve been a good fit

by Pack Man on Apr 25, 2009 8:35 PM EDT reply actions

I'm just disappointed

Every year I have a guy I zero in on and identify as a real need for the team. TD and the crew know better than me, but I really thought this kid could be special. I will survive now that I was able to swear.

Everybody feel free to unload their thoughts, by the way. This is too emotionally charged for fargin’ shaz.

Al Davis is insane...

he just picked a saftey with a 7th round grade in the 2nd…. i think he is going to drink his life blood so he can live a couple more years.

this is actually pissing me off.

Al Davis should be forced to retire. he is literally destroying a franchise like I’ve never seen. I mean Detroit sucks just based on stupidity but AL …. i don’t know but he need’s to be sen’t to the home before he trades up to draft Jeff George.

I mean really. when is the last time he drafted someone that actually worked out. Vishnu! i don’t know why this piss’s me off. i don’t even like the raiders. okay im gonna stop now before i burst a blood vessel.

If we gotta go OLB

Let’s go Marcus Freeman. I think the kid’ll be a good fit in Atlanta.

by Dave Choate on Apr 25, 2009 8:47 PM EDT reply actions

Denver's draft is very solid.

Also, watching Carolina take Everette Brown made me spit out my dinner. Holy f’n cow, we gotta deal with Peppers and Brown?? Thank god their DT are so bad.

do we plan to take defencive secondary

later in the draft ….or is there anyone who would fit for our second round pick

by Funballad on Apr 25, 2009 8:50 PM EDT reply actions

Depends who's available?

We sure need help there, but we need LBs too. Best athlete available I guess.

by tom slick on Apr 25, 2009 8:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm beginning to think we have to address the RT issue now.

The value is in Phillip Loadholt…

back when he picked butchers and felons to run his defence? he feed them blood in off season then staved them during the season to make them eat the other team. as you can tell i never liked the raiders

have never been anything more than disappointing in the last 10 years

Darn this draft… What on EARTH will the Falcons do?!?

by MentallyMIA on Apr 25, 2009 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

lol Agreed Fun.. I was not a Raider’s fan but I knew when a team had gotten too cocky..

I think you are seeing a run on Defense because a lot of teams are getting on the old side

why?

Our pass rush would tear QB’s apart.

Priorities

DE is a need, but it isn’t a bigger need than S and OLB.

Agreed

As a Tech fan it would be awesome to see Johnson as a Dirty Bird, but Safety was a higher priority.

You know, getting a linebacker or defensive end might've been nice here

But we have needs in the secondary. I really like this pick, as I do believe Moore was the absolute best player available. Period.

by Dave Choate on Apr 25, 2009 9:14 PM EDT reply actions

I agree

regardless of how much I want a pass rushing LB

William Moore was best available.

It was a good pick and the draft is far from over.

Filled a big need

Good size and tools, one capsule I read said he regressed a little last year though. We sure needed help at that position, I don’t see anyone clearly better than him.

Let me tell you something

I’m excited for tomorrow, even though I’m going to miss better than 50% of the draft because of work. I hope the team will find an outside linebacker.
