Detroit Lions Make Georgia QB Matthew Stafford First Pick Of 2009 Draft
The Lions signed Stafford to what could be a $78 million contract, with over $40 million guaranteed. What really ticks me off is that we already know who they've signed, but we're still going to have to wait ten minutes tomorrow for the team to come out and announce it. What do they do behind the scenes, anyways?

....
I fell sorry for Stafford. I pray they draft some o-line help for him.

Not to be mean, and I like Stafford, but...
Matt Ryan was a senior coming out, and had a chance, albeit a small one to be successful. Stafford will still need a year of coaching, and they don’t have a power running game. Since UGA is my 2nd favorite college team (they still have our OC on loan, lol), I root for their players. Does this remind anyone of Joey Harrington? Same path, hopefully different results…

I can only hope
that even with that huge contract… he doesn’t wind up being their starter this season. He has some more developing to do and they need to have a stronger offense to help him grow. They need a running game and they need some tackles. Hopefully they do this right or else this kid, who I really enjoyed in college, is going to flop, really really quickly
Stafford's Accountants
…should be thanking Matt Ryan right now.
It’s been said SO many times and I hate to beat a dead horse, but with a very few exceptions drafting a QB that high is a pretty horrible idea. I think there should be a rookie salary cap myself. Something like you can only sign rookies to 2 year contracts with exclusive rights to negotiate after it ends. 41 million guaranteed for Stafford? Sorry to all you Bulldog fans, but I don’t think Stafford is ready just yet for the big time.
In a way, each of us has an El Guapo to face.
Trust me when I say
That Stafford will not be the reason Detroit does badly this season. The kid maybe should have stayed (there are 41.7 million reasons that argue against that), but he is a perfect NFL starter. Who thought Eli Manning would turn into the success he did, and he’s a poor man’s Stafford, body build and college game-wise. Stafford played in the SEC East, which is a murder’s row, and played against some of the best defenses in the game. I’m not saying he’ll be Matt Ryan, but he won’t be Leaf. Look more to Peyton Manning’s first couple seasons for Stafford.
Cool

I 100% agree with that. We’l see. Should be interesting.

I guess
But there’s a reason everyone outside of Athens calls him Matt ‘Pick-6’ Stafford.
Also, I think it’s funny that a Detroit Lions fan wrote that he was another Harrington waiting to happen. Also, did you here what Young said about him? Basically wrote BUST across Stafford’s head forehead. They should have taken Oher instead of Pettigrew. It’s no wonder that team went 0-16 last year.

just don't get it
it never has made sense to me why QB’s come out of college early, you think they would want the extra coaching not to mention a college degree
