AJC Reports Tony Gonzalez Owed $14.25 Million Over Next Three Seasons
Sometimes a headline is so self-explanatory that you have nothing to add to it. That never happens to me, because I love to type. Type type type.
If Gonzalez plays at a high level for the next three seasons, that number doesn't even faze me.

he's worth the money but
I think the Falcons will re-sign Gonzalez to a new deal with a more managable cap number before the start of the season. Even it they don’t, there are a multitude of contractual adjustments teams can work out with their veterans to free up cap room. Not a big deal, imo.
hmm
So basically a little under 5mil per? Pfft, I’ll take it and you can’t really argue with that for the value we are getting. Re-working the contract to make it easier on the cap I’m sure will be nothing to worry aout, from either side.

Nope,
not even a flinch from me either.
Btw, this is a new deal.

Hate to be a little crude..
..but I am feeling a Pulp Fiction quote is appropriate right about now. And I will try to keep it as clean as possible..

He is a little long in the tooth and 3 more years of a high level of playing to me might be just a little bit of a stretch. At least a level of play worth 5 million. That being said, I am just really happy that he is on the team right now and will make a huge impact this year. Beyond that it remains to be seen and I don’t know if I am as optimistic as others.

Normally, I would agree with you but
age hasn’t seemed to have caught up with TG just yet. It might be because of the way he takes care of his body or just exceptionally good luck on his part, but his production over the last few seasons has been right up there with the best of his career.

2008 – 16 games started, 1058yds, 10tds
2007 – 16 games started, 1172yds, 5tds
2006 – 15 games started, 900yds, 5tds
In fact, he has only missed playing in two games since he became a starter in 1998. Maybe he’ll start to drop off in production this year or next, but it wouldn’t be part of any discernable trend that I can see.
We do need to realize in the offense that he's not gonna have those #s...
Some people will start to say he’s slipping, but that will not be the case. look for a 25-35% drop in his #s

I've been thinking about that...
I know we are going to be primarily a power running team, but depending on how other NFC South teams manage to adapt their defenses (i.e. linebackers) to covering TG I could see him challenging Roddy White as Matt Ryans first passing option especially in the redzone.
Also, back in 2005 & 2006 when Larry Johnson was racking up over 1,700 rushing yards for the Chiefs, Tony Gonzalez still managed to get +900 recieving yards in each of those years.
I wonder if the talk about our offense not strictly requiring a big play maker at tight end actually reflects the fundamental nature of Mularkey’s philosophy or if was merely the result of us lacking one on the roster.
good points

Then, TG was KC's #1 target, Roddy is ours...

Maybe...
I think the NFC South overall has better coverage corners than coverage linebackers/safties. Depending on how the defenses adapt or who they draft, I could see Gonzalez (or Winslow and Shockey for that matter) putting up major numbers.
Honestly, I would not be shocked if Gonzalez leds our team with receptions while Roddy leds in reception yardage through more explosive, long-range plays. However it ends up, I think we are going to have a VERY entertain offense next season. :)
Oh yeah
An elite WR, a bada** RB that chews up yardage, solid QB who won’t make many mistakes and Gonzo.
I like our odds of being at least a top 5 offense,

Great point!
This was one of the reasons why I felt that the loss of Crump last year wasn’t going to be as bad as some thought. This brings up a good question actually. I can’t imagine that they are going to stick with the offense from last year that where the TE wasn’t a huge part of the passing game.
I foresee Gonzo putting up 60-70 catches maybe and maybe about 750 to 800 yards with at least 7 td’s.

That was supposed to be..
