Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Isn't Up To Speed On Jeremy Lin, 'Linning'

This day gets better...

Per Comrade Dimitroff this move frees up the Falcons to focus on Defense.  Per Rotoworld:

"Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff acknowledged Thursday that the team will focus on defense at the top of the draft following the Tony Gonzalez trade.

Dimitroff admits he's seen many mock drafts sending Brandon Pettigrew to Atlanta at No. 24, but they'll likely pick a corner, defensive tackle, or outside linebacker now. The Falcons are close to Week 1-ready on offense. "

I gotta think Alphonso Smith, Darius Butler are the CB options, with Cushing, Matthews, Sintim, being the OLB options. DT Perry and Hood will hopefully be available but fingers crossed Ron Brace is our 2nd Rd Pick. Either him or Chung.

Thoughts?

"Close to week 1 ready"?

I would take this offense on the field today. Like I said, I want one more offensive lineman. But its great to know that the top of our board just went 100% defensive.

Reassuring

Agree that we need more OL talent. With Weiner gone, we need depth badly. If the Falcons’ brain trust can rebuild the D as quickly as they did the offense last year, we may have our elusive consecutive winning seasons this year!

I saw in the Bradley article one person had Jenkins falling all the way to us but isn’t the consensus pretty much that he’s gone way before us?

by BVaz on Apr 23, 2009 4:13 PM EDT reply actions

I said it once on the other blog...

But if you don’t have Cushing, Jerry, or Malcolm Jenkins available at #24, and Pettigrew is still on the board, we have some very good leverage because some teams that pick after us may be licking their chops for Pettigrew to fall to us. That means that we could possibly use Pettigrew at that spot to trade back, pick up one of the aforementioned players (Sintim, Matthews, Brace, Hood, Alphonso Smith, Delmas, Chung, or English) and get another pick in the fourth round somewhere.

Now if that’s not the best of all worlds I don’t know what is.

by LetsGoFalcons on Apr 23, 2009 4:18 PM EDT reply actions

And that was a horribly written description...

In short,

If no Cushing, Jerry, or Jenkins…

Trade #24 to a team drafting later (maybe the Bills with the 28th pick, or any of the early second round teams)

Pick up the best available of that group of guys, and add an additional pick in the 4th

by LetsGoFalcons on Apr 23, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it'd be great

And it’s still a very realistic scenario.

Cushing, Cushing, Cushing...

I’m finally talking myself into him being available at 24. Either way, I won’t be disappointed after what’s already been accomplished.

Quadruplates

What is the one team that had all pros at running back and wide receiver in 2008? Falcons. What is the one team now has all pros at RN, WR and TE? FALCONS!!

The Cowboys can have their triplets, we just got the quadruplates!!

by Whopper Dawg on Apr 23, 2009 4:40 PM EDT reply actions

All pro at QB also

I know you said quadruplets so he is obviously one of the 4, ps F the cowboys

Matty Ice is going to cool down Hawaii come next February

by BVaz on Apr 23, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

our Matty Ice

was pick number 4 for the Pro Bowl. He was a scheduled backup.

Sooooo… he was close enough to me.

I know I said 3,800 passing yards and 23 touchdowns for Matty Ice this season… but I wanna bump that up to 4,000 and 25

Hold on there....

I don’t expect the Falcons to get away from the power running game. I know we’re gonna have a chance to improve the D, but not enough to ignore TOP. Also, I think you’ll see YPC go down a little bit. That’s not a bad thing per se. Longer, time consuming drives are just what we need…

I just see a very Patriot-esque seasons in our future

remember when the Patriots went 16-0? Of course you do.

They had a decent defense and an incredible offense. Their offense put huge points on the board in answer to their defensive folleys. Falcons are all about big plays. Run, run, run, 65 yard pass and TD. They had a problem with scoring in the red zone last season, the majority of our touchdowns came from huge plays. I don’t see that changing too much. Sure, Gonzo will help us a lot in the red zone, but I also see a lot of big plays that take us deep.

The more points the defense allows, the more points our offense has to put up. I see a lot of 30 point games in our future.

Brace w/ our 2nd Rd?
Didn’t we just send our 2nd to KC?

by Mick Shrimpton on Apr 23, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions

We sent our 2nd rd pick for 2010

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

by FrankyWren on Apr 23, 2009 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions

awesome!!

hopefully we get matthews in the first round, and alphonso smith in rd. 2. perry hood and brace might be gone by the time we get to them

by dunndada77 on Apr 23, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

Love It!

TE is deep this year and there are good reciving TE in the draft. In my opinion we need an OLB with the departure of Boley. But seeing as we had a awful pass D I could see gettin a corner or a good pass rushing OLB. Just my 2cents

There's a rumor going around

that the Falcons are not yet done dealing with the Chiefs. KC has been shopping Glenn Dorsey around to several teams this offseason, and its a possibility that they are waiting till draft day to trade him to Atlanta for the #24 pick. It was only 1 year ago that we had that Ryan-Dorsey debate and now the Falcons can have both….Dimitroff is a genius.

by atlantaray on Apr 23, 2009 10:15 PM EDT reply actions

I would love to see that

but I don’t think it will happen – KC would have to take a huge cap hit to trade Dorsey right now and they still prize him as the 4th overall pick from last year, but for just our first round pick, I’d love this trade.

by MentallyMIA on Apr 23, 2009 10:54 PM EDT up reply actions

its tempting...

but I don’t know if the Chiefs would take the cap hit (most speculation I’ve seen puts the number around 18million). If they did, I wouldn’t give up more than our first rounder for him. There are just too many other holes in our defense we need to fill.

by Leon07 on Apr 23, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

If its anymore than the 1st rounder and maybe a later round pick, forget about it. Then you’d just go ahead take Peria Jerry or another defensive player at 24 if that’s the case. But if its on the table and KC figures out how to do it without taking that big of a hit, you do it in a heart beat.

by atlantaray on Apr 23, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Im hearing that as well.

Its based on JA 98 and the number 24 overall pick on draft day for Dorsey. Also LOVE YOUR AVATAR…

This rumor is draft day based bc ATL wants to move back into the second round somehow and have 2 2nds…

I know

The deal may be contingent on us trading with someone else to get the addl 2nd. Not with KC.
