Ladies, Gentlemen, and Dave... I give you... Tony Gonzalez

The Falcons agreed to acquire Pro Bowl tight end Tony Gonzalez from the Kansas City Chiefs for a second-round pick in next year’s NFL Draft, the team announced Thursday.

“Tony brings a new dynamic to the Falcons offense and we are very pleased that we were able to make the trade with Kansas City,” General Manager Thomas Dimitroff said. “His career numbers and records are top notch and he will no doubt be an integral part of our offense.”

The 13-year veteran is the all-time leader among tight ends in receptions (916), touchdowns (76) and receiving yards (10,940). He’s played in 191 career games and missed just two starts since 1998. Gonzalez’s 93 catches (1,058 yards) last season marked the third-highest single-season total of his career. He also added 10 touchdowns, the third time he’s had 10 or more scores in a season.

Time will tell

Not sure about the long-term wisdom of giving up a 2nd rounder for Gonzalez, who’s still productive but has seen his best days. On the other hand, I was skeptical about drafting Ryan, so what do I know? I guess Comrade gets the benefit of the doubt for now.

Nice to have that extra offensive weapon with our limited front-line talent at WR, for sure. I do hope this isn’t indicative of an offense-leaning mindset going into the draft, though.

Because we need help on D now. Smart move. Our 2nd pick maybe the last pick in the 2nd round next year!

What a steal.

From a Chiefs fan:
Congrats. He is the greatest ever. Tony Gonzalez is not as fast as he used to be, but somehow he still keeps getting better and better every year. Damn. We got hosed.

Tony G.

Is the best player to line up in the TE position….EVER!!! You guys got one HELL of a player, on and off the field he is synonymous with professional (he could even save your life).

The only thing that I ask is that your team gets him the ring that IMO he deserves, and I wish we could have given him. I will be rooting for the Falcons every game this year.

I'm not complaining.

Giving Matt Ryan another offensive weapon is stacking the deck in my opinion. Yes, I would have liked to have kept that 2nd round pick but who am I to question the man who put together a draft class that had two or three immediate impact rookies.

WOO!

I am actually uncharacteristically excited about this. I was so afraid of losing this year’s draft picks.

I really hope that we just gave the chiefs the last pick of the second round next year. I’m predicting Matt Ryan throws for 3,800 yards and 23 touchdowns this season.

I really hope we get to keep this guy for a couple of years.

Out of the 3,800 yards and 23 touchdowns.

Tony G should account for 1000+ yards and 5-10 TD’s of that.

I really do hope so

I’ve never been a Chief’s fan, but I’ve always admired TG as a player (just as I do Tom Brady, LT even with is decline, Polamalu, Lewis, Abe, etc.)

For Tony G faithfuls (the Chiefs fans), I truly do hope the Falcons are the ticket to his SB ring. His Hall of Fame jersey will always belong to KC.

hoo!

great trade. ..and i’m so excited about the draft.

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that.

Damnit! This sucks!

I’m a big Saints fan and a fan of the Falcoholic (hey, the dood has great posts). This blows for us Saints fans. We already have crap pass coverage. Now we need a safety who actually can cover someone, too?

And since when did all the top tight ends come to the NFC South? It’s getting ridiculous.

This Rocks.

okay so let me break this down. we have Matt Ryan QB, Michael Turner RB, Roddy White WR, and now Tony Gonzales TE. hhhmmm does this remind you of any previous teams?
Answer: Denver Broncos of Super Bowl XXXIII ( yes the one we lost) we are so going to destroy the division.

Woah tiger, that team also had a defense...

Lets wait and see how tonight goes, then we can declare ourselves Super Bowl champs… =)

I dunno

but when people keep naming off our team of all stars. They keep leaving out our other key offensive “powers”. Norwood is damn near a starter quality RB. Mughelli never dropped a pass last season and he may be by far the best blocking FB in the league. Every other player seems to be developing really quick too. We are lacking a super elite line of tackles and guards… but we will get that in time. Hopefully we can find at least one of those in the draft.

You are very right too NaGaNole… our D has some serious holes in it. I do believe that if we could build our pass rush a little in the draft though, that will strengthen the whole defense enough to keep us winning. Just think about it. If our offense puts up a 14 point lead by the end of the first half, it is going to force opposing teams to go for “big plays” – this gives a pass rush a chance to shine.

Who knows… maybe I’m overly optimistic. I really do think that our defense can be powerful with the addition of a DT and a pass rushing LB. A little more depth at corner, and as Madden would say it, BOOM! We’d have a defense.

also, we seem to also fail to mention we have one of the best special teams units in the NFL, which I believe was key to our success last season.
