I'd probably care about this a lot less if Jay Cutler wasn't on my keeper league fantasy football team. Feel free to discuss the trade here if you're interested.

Compensatin

Um, wow. Preliminary reports (PFT) have it at either two 1st-round picks and Kyle Orton for Cutler and a five (Jay Glazer, FOX) or two 1st-round picks and Kyle Orton for Cutler and a three (John Clayton, ESPN).

Either way, who is Cutler going to throw to?

More compensatin' goin' down

NFL.com reports it’s two 1sts, a 3rd, and Orton for only Cutler.

And on the “receivers to throw to” subject, Chicago WR Earl Bennett played with Cutler at Vandy. Just saying.

I'm an Earl Bennett fan

But they really should be working to get him more help.

That sounds like a bit much ...

I live in Milwaukee, and let me tell you: Bears fans are less than forgiving MOST of the time. If this doesn’t pan out, it’ll be an epic FAIL.

woah

I didn’t see this coming at all. I honestly was fearing that Caronlina might aquire him through some freakish trade involving Delhomme and Peppers… but maybe I’m overly paranoid with the unlikely after last season.

I’m just glad the trade was out of our division. I don’t think the Bears came out on top with that trade though. They were willing to trade the house for that guy. Orton cannot possibly be an answer for Denver at QB. What do you think their plans might be at this point?

by MentallyMIA on Apr 2, 2009 6:46 PM EDT reply actions

Well,

Simms/Orton will fight to start this year (I’m banking on Simms), with the possibility of getting Bradford/Tebow next year if Simms/Orton can’t run the offense.

Tebow?

Yikes …

Actually,

I think Orton will be OK there. He was decent last year until he hurt his ankle, Denver has plenty of weapons (Marshall, Royal, Scheffler), and he played in a quasi-spread in college. AND – don’t forget – his coach just turned a guy who hadn’t played since High School into a 2nd Round draft pick (and people were mad that they got ripped off)!!

I was really hoping

We wouldn’t have to face cutler again, either in Carolina or Tampa. At least its only in one game this year instead of two. I sure hope our defensive backfield comes along…

by phoenix falcoholic on Apr 2, 2009 7:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah ...

But who is he going to throw to? Brandon Lloyd? Marty Booker? Desmond Clark? Oh dear.

the thing about Cutler is

he’ll be able to hit Hester on those deep routes. Hester hasn’t slowed down much – he’s always a threat on a streak route and with a gun-slinging, deep throwing, accurate QB, he might finally get to shine. I can very easily see a similar Hester/Cutler chemistry like you see in White/Ryan where a receiver that appeared to be a bust (to the media, I always had faith in White though) becomes gold when the right QB gets thrown into the mix.

by MentallyMIA on Apr 2, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess ...

I thought Hester was A LOT smaller than Roddy, but apparently Roddy is only an inch taller and 15 lbs heavier. So there goes that argument. Nonetheless, D Clark started over Hester last fall, so I think he must be lacking in some regard. But you’re absolutely right, maybe Cutler can help him break out, so to speak.

Geez

The whole Cutler situation reminds me so much of what we had to put up with D. Hall last off-season.

I agree

i reckon Cutler will be a FAIL for the Bears just because whiny, im-the-number-one-and -want-everyone-to-love-me kind of players usually do, karmas a bitch and Cutler is definitely a bitch.

I disagree

I think he has a right to be upset with the broncos. He was repeatedly lied to by the organization, then put on the trade block the season after he went to the probowl. It was clear he and McDaniels weren’t going to get along. The fact that he came back and had a great season after finding out that he had diabetes is pretty impressive.

No matter which side you fall on

Trading a franchise quarterback usually doesn’t work out well.

I'm not offended ...

I’m guilty of drunk posting from time to time. Heck, at least you’re putting it out there. So where do I pick up this Falcohol? Do they sell it in the States?

So this leaves the Broncos in the hunt for a QB in the draft, right?

Workinzzzzz. Out of state training for the new job.

Having to write the manual, knowledge base, and internal customer FAQ/Quick References for an industrial meat wrapper. Fun times.

Once I have a laptop (soon as work approves of my order…) I’ll be on much more frequently.

I've heard speculation

That they might try to stock up on defense, then trade their first round picks in 2010 to get the first pick overall, and grab the qb they want. Next year’s qb class (Colt McCoy, Tim Tebow, maybe Sam Bradford) should be stronger than this year’s.

by phoenix falcoholic on Apr 3, 2009 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

Denver could go QB

Which would free up what likely would have been a defensive selection. Just a guess there, though.

Ala Hershel Walker!

Personally I thought the Bears gave up a bit much for the biggest cry baby I’ve seen to wear a football uniform. If the Broncos can draft wisely they certainly could rebuild that team for years to come. The Bears in the otherhand, are lucky if they win a couple more games with Cutler at the most. If you think they’re going to go 13-3…your out of your right mind. I hope he breaks his clavicle in week 1!!!!
