Drafting Advice for POD Mock - I have the Falcons.
Hey Everyone,
I picked the Falcons to draft for in the Pride of Detroit mock this year. I am a primary Detroit Lions fan, but after living in Augusta for 5 years and attending Falcons games that entire time, they are my second love when it comes to the NFL.
I see the greatest needs as being DT and OLB, would most of you agree? My problem is that there are several players I like and I can't decide which would be a stronger fit, so I thought I would try and get some help. Here are the players I am considering :
1. Clay Matthews - He is still available but I have seen that several on here don't like him. I believe he is the best and most versatile OLB left, why do you not like him or was that just a minority?
2. Ziggy Hood - He's a beast, I just can't decide if it is a reach and if DT is more of a need than OLB.
3. English and Sintim are both still available and I know that many on these boards like them. I still don't believe however, that they are better than Matthews. Do you like Sintim better than Matthews with both being available? I feel like we lucked out having Matthews fall to 24.
Any advice would be great, thanks!

Matthews
That would be my pick

Well,
Of those 4 choices, I’d go:
1. Hood
2. Matthews
3. Sintim
4. English
I consider DT the biggest need this offseason, and I’d love to have Hood. I think his skills would be a great fit for the 1-technique (NT) we need. Plus, I don’t think he would be a reach at all, really (NFLDraftScout has him as the #26 prospect, and Matthews at #22).
As for Matthews – I am always scared of guys in great Defenses (other players can hide their weaknesses) or a single standout in a terrible Defense. Plus, I think he’s getting bonus points for his “bloodlines”. He didn’t start until 3 games into his Senior season, and now he’s a first round prospect?? It doesn’t make sense to me.
Sintim’s been well discussed here, but I worry that he would fit better in a 3-4 scheme. Plus, most of what I’m seeing has him as the biggest reach (not Hood).
I’m worried about English even more than Sintim. He played DE in college, and I don’t want to have to worry if he can make the transition to OLB. I think he might be better in a 3-4 also.
One name I would at least consider (if he was still around) is Vontae Davis. Certainly not ahead of Hood or Matthews, though.
Sintim
He’s been mocked higher than Hood in many mock drafts I’ve seen, so I wouldn’t say Sintim is the reach of this group. Actually I’ve seen all these guys interchanged and would venture to say each team has them mixed and matched on their draft charts. I like Sintim here, just because most of his negatives (fluid hips, plays tall, turning and covering in man coverage) can be coached and his strengths and intangibles are exactly what our defense needs. I wouldn’t knock Matthews because of his limited time as a starter. He’s a self-made hard worker than never quit and earned a spot in the spotlight and shined. He is a solid player and I wouldn’t mind having him either. I will put faith in TD’s decision here and won’t be upset with any 1st round pick that’s a DT or an OLB. TD knows more than I know about these folks and has proven to have good instincts, so who am I to blast the pick?
MatthewDC, I think that OLB should be drafted first, so in your particular situation I’d go Sintim.

Sintim's where it's at.
Don’t know much about Matthews. I’ll have to look into him.

I'd go
Hood and then Matthews. We really need a mammonth on the interior part of the line and Hood looks like he will fit the part. Matthews is a beast and you can’t overlook the NFL pedigree.
Well
Just give JA another year and he will be well over 320 lbs. Heck, I bet he’s getting close by the day.

I’d like to see what Ziggy and Babs could do in the middle of our D-line. I think it would be awesome. Maybe trade up for Sintim in the 2nd round.
