A Very Falcoholic Discussion: The Next Atlanta Falcons Signing
Man, it is slow out there right now. I keep waiting for the Falcons to make a music video or create a legion of superheroes or something, but so far there's been no luck.
Looking ahead to more exciting news, I'd like to see who you all think the next Falcons pickup will be. There's no way they go all the way through the rest of free agency without signing someone--though not necessarily someone of consequence--so why not take a stab at it? If you're right, you'll win a fabulous prize of my choosing, which means it probably won't be fabulous at all.
Might as well start, no?

Waiting is NOT sweet sorrow
I don’t think you will see anything until the next wave of cuts hit. That should come after the draft.

confused!
ok,i feel like im eating crazy pills! i am completely confused by all the mock drafts out there saying that the falcons will take brandon pettigrew.
I understand in Mike Mularkey’s offensive system,BLOCKING tight ends are the preference. But dont we already have 4 on the team already? Peele,Rader,Hartsock, and Zinger. Those are all BLOCKING tight ends with developing hands.
now,why in the name of Matt Ryan would we draft another SLOW,BLOCKING tight end??? i know he has better hands than our guys, but he still ran in the 4.8’s .
Dont WE (the proverbial WE ) need a tight end that can stretch the middle of the football field? Someone that can get linebackers quickly out of position, letting Turner/Norwood hit the second level a little bit easier. A tight end that can get safetys out of position letting OUR recievers get more 1 on 1 coverage?
IM personally a fan of Jared Cook from USC in the second round.BIG guy, good hands, 4.48.
Anyways, point is, can anyone tell me why WE should get Pettigrew?
im totally open to reasonable arguments,i just cant figure it out??? lol

Welcome to the site
It’s not that Pettigrew can’t be a good player, but the Falcons need defense. We had a very good, young, dynamic offense, and spending a first round pick on that again when we have such clear needs everywhere in the D isn’t my idea of a great idea.

Pelle: Not a blocking TE.
Zinger: Not very good …
Hartsock: An excellent blocking TE, but he has poor hands.
Radar: Not very good …
I apologize for the brevity of this reply (I’m busy at school right now), but I think your analysis of our TE corps might be a little off. Pettigrew is a true dual-threat TE, something we are currently lacking.

Same thing
FrankyWren said, but I do like your use of Matt Ryan as God. I saw him at the airport the other day. (Him obviously referring to God, as mortals can’t see M-tt Ry-n)

I like the omission ...
his name is far to sacred to be written out in its entirety.

Cook
I’m sure he’s a great guy, but his blocking ability is below average. He played in a spread offense, so he has little to no experience lining up alongside the big boys. His attitude has been questioned as well (he’s known to lose focus).

Maybe we'll sign...
…a mediocre DT with potential like Dewayne Robertson, Tank Johnson or Shawn Cody.

pettigrew
this is the simple way i see it ( maybe to simple) our offense is ranked #6 in the league ( yards/game) our defense is ranked 24th in yards given/game. off of that stat and the way free agency is going, there is no way in hell I see us taking a TE as first pick. As a side note can anyone believe we made it that far with a defense that ridiculous?
I also have no earthly idea who we are going to sign, but what I do know is it will not be someone we expect, and we will pay minimum for them.

Just to play devil's advocate...
Most of us didn’t like the Ryan pick either. But if TD thinks that Pettigrew will be a special Gonzales/Whitten type talent, and doesn’t have the same faith that anybody else available will that special at thier position, thenyou gotta take him. Who cares if we need a DT/OLB/SS/CB if they guy we take at 24 is only a notch better than what we have now? Yes we do have needs, but you don’t skip the special talent for needs. If he feels that Pettigrew is no better at TW than say anoyone else is at thier pos, then he’ll draft for need….

Lawyer Milloy?
I can see resigning him at a reduced cost.

I agree.
I can see the Law Dog coming back before training camp.

Not to mention
That I would be excited to be able to refer to the “Law Dog” again. Or if he ever made a tackle, I’d get one more season of “OH, he just laid down the Law!”

Oh, that's a fun game
“Houston we have a problem” – actually, that one works if he gets beat by the WR
“He was bound to be killed by Abraham on that sack” – would probably work better if there was a QB named Isaac
“Gotta get that guy the Sintim” – you know, the scent-em, the smelling salts; no? too much of a stretch?
Well I said it was fun – I didn’t say I was any good at it.

No way IMO
Peter King (earlier in the pre-season) wrote about how problematic he was in the clubhouse. I think Smitty was happy to see him go.

TE
Surely a play on scheffler is on the cards if Denver truly are shopping him. He’s not missed too many games with injury, catches well and still young so loads of upshots. I suppose its just a question of what it will take to get him. 3rd round pick if we’e lucky?

Crud, I was hoping Falcons @ Cowboys would fall on Thanksgiving...
Instead, it’s the Raiders. Which makes so much more sense.
