The 2009 Falcoholic Mock Draft Spectacular: First Round
To no one's surprise, you guys suggested an incredible number of defensive players.
That's right, not even one offensive player made our draft list. You guys actually nominated a monkey riding a Segway, but not tight end Brandon Pettigrew. I don't know whether to be surprised or just revel in your oddness. I think I'll go with the latter.
The important thing is that we have our field of candidates for the first pick in the 2009 draft. There's a fairly good mix of defensive line, linebackers and secondary in here, so there's something for everybody. I'm going to leave the voting open over the weekend and we'll pull the winner either Sunday night or Monday morning, depending on whether or not one guy takes the rest out behind the woodshed.
In the comments, feel free to nominate guys you think will still be there for the second round or just gripe about how the voting is going. Above all, have fun discussing the draft. Besides the season itself, it's the most wonderful time of the year!

Gotta say, we picked up a LB in the 2nd round last year and he turned out pretty well…
And by pretty well, I mean Freakin’ Awesome. I hope we do something similar again this year. Or if TE Jared Cook out of USC (South Carolina, not Southern Cal) who i feel will be pretty good.

Sorry people, but
Brian Cushing ain’t gonna be there at 24
"If the Falcons ever manage to win a Super Bowl in my lifetime, I'll french kiss a toilet." - a friend.
Yeah, I'm starting to agree
He’s the ideal pick, but his stock has gone up and I’m betting he gets picked in the 10-20 range. However, I’d take his teammate Matthews.

I agree
Its easy to select Brian Cushing from that list, but bottom line is he wont be available with our selection.

We're gonna trade out....
…most people assume the quality is as good from picks 24-40, so why not trade down and pick up an extra 2nd rounder, above pick 40. It’ll be the kid from Alabama (Rashad Johnson). Then with our reg 2nd round pick we can take Phil Loadholt out of OU. He’d be the dominate right tackle for 7-10 years. If you’re worried about SS, I say wait till next year and take Eric Berry. If you’re dieing to have a SS now, you could take the kid from Clemson (Clemons sp?). He should be there in the 3rd round.

Cushing would be awesome
Sadly, that ain’t happening. Of that list, I think Jerry would sit best with me. I just don’t like the 24 pick. If things shake out the way people are predicting, I would love to see a trade. Up or down could work, but I would prefer the team move up for a blue chipper or load up on draft picks. Maybe we could entice somebody to throw us a 2010 first rounder.
Segway Monkey
Can you imagine it! we would actually have a pass rush. that and the monkey could distract the opponents by throwing crap at them or showing reruns of Curious George…

I'm sticking w/ the segway monkey ...
No, seriously, if Cushing is gone … Sintim or Maybin are our best bets IMO.
For those of you supporting Jerry, what say you about his age/below average technique/present inability to fit our scheme?

Really
They shouldnt even take a Def. player in the first round if the TE brandon pettigrew from oklahoma state is there. Hes a great blocker for our already good run game. Then our Franchise player Matt Ryan needs a big target for the redzone and as a former QB. Look at the other teams out there. Big Ben , and Heath miller. Tony Romo and Jason Witten. just some examples. we need that type of player at TE. he didnt run blazing speed at the combine but you cant judge him all on that. looken at the film of his college career hes the top TE.

I still like Pettigrew
But I think our defense needs such a substantial overhaul that I don’t know if Dimitroff will let the first round or second round pass without hitting multiple defensive needs.
I agree ...
I can’t remember who wrote the FanPost, but elite TEs aren’t always first-rounders. In fact, in the status quo (read: the league right now), they usually aren’t.

ok
TEs like gates though are hard to find. your assumeing that a late round TE will be a probowler or a hidden gem. some examples of the number 1 TE in the draft, first one selected . 1 13 Tony Gonzalez Chiefs California 1 14 Bubba Franks Packers Miami (FL) 1 31 Todd Heap Ravens Arizona State 1 14 Jeremy Shockey Giants Miami (FL) 1 24 Dallas Clark Colts Iowa 1 6 Kellen Winslow Jr Browns Miami (FL) 1 30 Heath Miller Steelers Virginia 1 6 Vernon Davis 49ers Maryland 1 31 Greg Olsen Bears Miami (FL) 1 30 Dustin Keller Jets Purdue.
some of the TEs that went first TE drafted that year. Some with already Superbowls and Probowl apperances. All of them have helped there team some period in there years in playing like heath miller blocking in the superbowl agaisnt the seattle. just useing an example. I just believe that seeing Brandon play in college that he might or could be like some of these TEs.
But yes i will agree you may be able to get a TE later but thats a might. There are depth at DE and at Linebacker. with the add of Mike peterson a vertern linebacker he will bring some smarts and toughness to the team. Yea i guess i was just thinking TE only cause i have put all my faith in Matt ryan and dont want him to fail because we dont have as much talent around him. like colts or pats or even Steelers

Hey ... I'm w/ ya
But given the needs at DT/LB/SS, coupled w/ the apparently imminent signing of LJ, it doesn’t seem likely that we’ll pursue Pettigrew.
Trust me, I wanted Pettigrew … but I was talked out of it (thanks Falcoholics).
I think Blue Falcon did the FanPost on successful TEs taken in late rounds, so maybe he can provide some insight.
My feeling is the TE is a need, but w/ the defense resembling swiss cheese at the moment, nabbing Pettigrew at 24 probably isn’t the most prudent pick. Heck, given his performance at the combine, I’ll be surprised if anyone picks him in the first round.

How can you not have
Matt Stafford or Mark Sanchez on this list? I would take either of them over anyone else on this list.
Because this is picking for the Falcons only
And I think the last thing the Falcons need is a quarterback.
I think he was joking ...
but you the man Dave.

Probably
And I am definitely the man!
I gotta avoid hitting the site when I’m too exhausted to think straight.
X-Mas present for Dave?

Says a lot about Falcoholic posters
that the Segway monkey got 19votes haha
and i normally chose these options.
go hard or go home
I like the Segway Monkey
but I think we could pick him up in a late round or maybe FA. I also like him on offense, probably as a slot reciever. His ball skills might not be great but I think I’d just putting him in motion would be distracting enough for defenses
