A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Projecting The Cornerbacking Corps
Let's try a little depth chart action today.
You're taking our current group of corners and one draft pick. That's all you're allowed. What you're then going to do is pick the starters and establish a pecking order for those guys. Assume that your cornerback pick is not in the first round and then go nuts from there.
For kicks and giggles, try to project the number of tackles, interceptions and pass deflections each of those guys will get, too. If you somehow get it all right, you'll win a fabulous prize that I will probably come up with in the very last week of next season. It's win-win!
Right, on with it, then.

Here's my try at it
Starters: Houston, Jackson
Next in: Hutchins, Rookie CB, Grimes, Irons
Stats are so hard to predict for corners, especially tackles. I’ll throw out a guess and say Houston gets 65 tackles. He only get 4 picks, about 20 pass deflections.
Jackson: 50 tackles, 5 picks, 20 pass deflections.
Hutchins: 20 tackles, 2 picks, 5 pass deflections.
I have no idea with the other guys.

Here we go
I say the starters will be Houston at LCB and either Grimes or Jackson at RCB (depending on who wins out at Camp) with the loser switching to Nickle back.
I don’t know where Hutchins fits in, but he might compete for a starting spot, or at the least compete for the Nickle back.
I’m a fan of David Irons, but from what i’ve heard the Coaching staff is not too sold on him.
If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother.

Hutchins
will be competing to start opposite Houston.
Remember it was TD that brought him in.

Oh dear ...
Houston and a platoon of Jackson/Hutchins will start.
Then (in this order) our draft pick, Grimsey, and Irons.

Just a feeling...
I think Hutchins is going to be a very pleasant surprise, and probably starting from the outset.

Just curious Dave ...
do you see no scenario where we trade for a CB? I mean, I understand it isn’t a given. But neither is drafting a CB, don’t you think?

I could see us maybe trading
But it’s easier for me to conceive of us using a draft pick than making a trade, which is why I put it in there. Not sure who’s out there the Falcons would have any interest in.

i thought we might go for Lito Sheppard, alas not to be

That's fair ...
I was looking for an updated list of FA CBs, but I don’t think what I found is completely up-to-date. Anyone know where I could find such a list?

I'm not sure what you were looking at
But I like to use the one at scout.com . It’s usally a day or so behind, but nothing’s happening really fast now. Or you could always use the FA tracker at espn.com, but you have to be an “insider” to get much more than the list of names.

could be anyone at this point
I cant project numbers when I have no idea who’s going to be the corners. If I had to guess It would be….I don’t really know? They could all rotate for all I know. Houston will start along with Hutchins platooned with Jackson and Grimes. lol This is the most up in the air position right now. I don’t even know if TD knows?

Tall Rookie CB
I’m ok with letting Hutchins and Jackson battle for one side with the loser being the nickel. Hopefully we concentrate on the front seven early and then use the 3rd or 4th pick to grab a taller CB. This guy could develop over time and help out immediately in the redzone with taller receivers. Somebody like…

I kinda like the way you're thinking
Even though I thought Sherrod Martin would be strictly a FS. Here’s some more names for you:
-Morgan Trent, Michigan
-Kevin Barnes, Maryland
-Donald Washington, Ohio State

true
my idea isnt about size get speed for the star recievers in the nfl thats why we lost the play offs im not saying any names “lawyer milloy” but if we get speed we can develop hitting power and hopefully he comes with hops and he will be feared but i dont think we should take a chance pick up a vet corner on a 1 year contract and if the rookie doesnt put out we have someone we’re sure can do the job
by mistab50 on Mar 13, 2009 2:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
what about trading vick
for a corner and a draft pick but first we would have to resign him to a better contract

I don't know ...
I was a Poli Sci/French major, but that seems like a PR nightmare waiting to happen. But you’re right, nobody is going to want Vick’s current contract.

Here's the starters
Chris Houston (even though he still constantly gets burnt. Rashied Davis burnt him for that TD during the Chicago game) and Chevis Jackson
