AJC: Falcons Could Have Up To Nine Picks In 2010 NFL Draft
Wonderful news coming from D. Orlando Ledbetter, who tells us that the Falcons could get up to four compensatory picks in a draft that should have plenty of attractive options for the team. Thomas Dimitroff strikes again?

We lost so many free agents last year
Boley, Brooking, Foxworth, among others. It wouldn’t surprise me if we got a bunch of compensatory picks. I believe that’s how they’re determined, that being based on how many players you lost to free agency/retirement.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!" -Wes Durham
This Has Been Dimitroff's Plan All Along
If you wondered why he didn’t go about signing a free agent immediately. This is the reason why. For every unrestricted free agent that we did not resign last year that signed with other teams before June 1 last year (Brooking, Boley, Foxworth, etc.), we received draft pick compensation under the CBA. This allows us to get a stock pile of picks, which gives us greater flexibility in next year’s draft (trade up to get a player, trade down and stockpile more, etc.).
Now, if we had gone out and signed some guys, we likely would not have been awarded these compensatory picks, and the NFL Management Council takes into account FAs signed. Dimitroff likely decided that it was better to be younger and faster than older and experienced at this point in our time frame, so he signed a couple of key veterans who were inexpensive (Peterson, Williams) and who wouldn’t cost us on the draft pick compensation. With Brooking, Boley, Foxworth, and Grady Jackson, it’s pretty likely we’ll get awarded some decently ranked picks, and those are way more valuable long term than any overpaid free agent.
We will get 3
Peterson makes up for Brooking…
This is what Im thinking, looking at early mock drafts, the beast out of Alabama, Terrence COdy is going med-late in first round, should Falcons take a risk on him and move Babs to end? Also there is a stud DB Coming out of FSU I think… We should take the risks.
I'd love to see Cody dressed in red.
I’ve been told he’s a good move for a 3-4 scheme but not a 4-3. I gotta disagree. I think he’s big enough to take up space in a 3-4 alignment and quick enough to get upfield in a 4-3. I don’t see him as “taking a chance” but a lead pipe lock (Okay as close as one gets in the League).
How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?
GO FALCONS!!!
I have a feeling
that the Falcons are going look downright scary after this next draft. Mark my words, we WILL be a dominant team in 2010.
Continues striking
I think is the more appropriate phrase.
I know everyone feels like this past draft class was underwhelming but injuries happen. Let’s see how things look next season. I seem to recall some people frowning on Decoud last season and he came to play this year.
I think Moore, Jerry and Owens will pan out well. We still need a true #1 corner more than anything else and I genuinely believe our pass rush will advance with Jerry’s return and Sidbury’s development.
Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish — a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow — to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested...Res ipsa loquitur. Let the good times roll.

with draft not guaranteeing automatic success
can we expect team management to trade some picks to other teams in exchange for a #1 CB?

I think that’s a bad idea. There’s a reason the NFL powerhouse franchises are compromised almost entirely of their own draft picks.

I agree with you
and that’s long term thinking. but it also depends on what is the timeframe within which the owner is expecting results from this team
