A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Beating The Buffalo Bills

If you're not familiar with the format of these discussions by now, you're probably brand new. And if so, welcome to the site!

What we're doing here today is brainstorming ways to beat the Buffalo Bills. Considering we're at home in the dome, their top two quarterbacks are injured and we should be getting a few injured players back, that may not seem daunting, but it never hurts to have a plan in place that our coaching staff could follow, even if they won't.

So brainstorm, plot and plan through the day today, and we'll cobble together our official Falcoholic strategy for whupping the Bills.

Just a matter of slowing down Fred Jackson, who is just short of his first 1000 yard season.

Beyond that, this team is plagued by injuries, poor qb play, and general inconsistency.

I think the win at the Jets has given us the energy and tenacity to finish extremely strong.

So long back-monkey!!!

i say

the backups backup at qb, we blitz blitz blitz. we can get pressure and that will make this game easier, just roll a little safety help over t.o’s way and it should be good to go!

by BigSkee on Dec 22, 2009 1:38 PM EST reply actions

We need to trust our secondary

and use our LBs to constantly blitz Fitzpatrick. Our secondary shined against New York on the road; we just have to hope they can perform two weeks in a row.

run the ball

but do it with some creativity – not plain up the middle. don’t make Ryan throw the ball even if he feels ok – I think the Bills have one of the league leaders in pick-sixes.

run the ball

Well he doesn’t have any pick sixes, but Jarius Byrd does lead the league in interceptions as a rookie so at least we got one thing right with the draft last year!

by J-R on Dec 22, 2009 3:39 PM EST up reply actions

Brian Brohm at QB?

If their top two guys can’t go, we’ll get to see Bobby Petrino’s Louisville QB, small world eh? Bet the Falcons are salivating at the prospect of a QB that’s never taken a regular-season snap!

Bills’ D appears to be vulnerable to the run. They rank dead last in rushing yards allowed per game, and 31st in yards allowed per rush attempt.

by tom slick on Dec 22, 2009 2:18 PM EST reply actions

RUN, RUN, AND RUN AGAIN

Ryan should have no more than 20 passes, like slick said were playing the worst run defense, run the ball make the game shorter, 8 man fronts on defense and blitz to put the game on brohm’s shoulders IN GRIMES I TRUST

by gritzblitz on Dec 22, 2009 2:35 PM EST reply actions

The Bills D has not been very strong for the most part, but lately they have been doing a much better job. Besides, who is going to run the ball for you? Turner will be hurt on his first play back and Snelling and Norwood wouldn’t strike fear into my 90 year old grandmother. This is going to be a game like you had last week against the Jets. low scoring, ugly and the least mistake wins the game.

Now with Brohm starting his first game and this being his first week not running the Practice Squad, I am willing to bet our mistakes outway yours..but we will see!

by J-R on Dec 22, 2009 2:54 PM EST reply actions

Snelling is a beast

He can run through the Bills’ D. Provided, of course, that Mularkey doesn’t have him running into brick wall up the middle all the time.

by Gemini-RU on Dec 22, 2009 3:28 PM EST up reply actions

A beast? Michael Turner is a beast. Snelling is an average RB at best, but we have a below average run D, so you might be right!

by J-R on Dec 22, 2009 3:40 PM EST up reply actions

Not average

Godawful.

Sorry, but you have the worst run defense in the NFL. Snelling got almost 4 yards per carry against the best defense in the NFL, and he did it with crap play calling from Mularkey where he was forced to run into a brick wall. Norwood slowly getting healthier too.

I agree that Turner is a beast though. Who knows, if he plays and lasts the whole game, we might be talking a very different story…

by Jebidillah on Dec 22, 2009 8:37 PM EST up reply actions

Snelling is reliable

and that’s all you need in a game like that. of course, it also depends on which Bills show up. you were able to beat Carolina in Charlotte, so obviously you took care of run defense in that game, and you gave hard time to the Pats twice. But you also lost to the Browns in the “punt battle” by an ugly score of 3-6.
I think we should win though, provided there is no complacency involved. and judging by what I hear (Turner willing to play) I can say the Falcons are serious about this game.

I hope you are right

I think we will win, but by a smaller margin. A lot will depend on playcalling here. You have the obvious choice of running the ball against poor rush defense, but you are also looking at a strong pass defense. I think the key for us is NOT to turn the ball over and give them a chance.
Also, I may be wrong, but I think the Bills have top-tier special teams with a great return man. So, limit turnovers and watch out during the returns – and we should win.

should be doable

Although, as someone mentioned above, their pass defense is not that bad , actually it’s 3rd in the NFL, and Jairus Byrd is imo defensive rookie of the year (tops the NFL with 9 interceptions). OTOH, Falcons fare well against good pass defenses (W against Jets, Washington, Bears, Bucs, split with Panthers), if we keep Matt in the background and work with the run. Bills are dead last against the run. Looks like a hint to me. :)

Is a beast.

But, people, HE’S INJURED.

He is a beast. Great story, too.

He’s hurt… he’s not injured. And he has had the groin injury all year. He had surgery in training camp. Yet he’s still picked off a league-leading 9 passes.

Carry on. :-)

OK so I was wrong.

Byrd was just placed on Injured Reserve. The timing is odd since he’s been playing with the injury all season.

Up the middle.

Snelling willo run up the middle 20 times and on every first down. Even I can call the plays.

by old cuss on Dec 22, 2009 3:45 PM EST reply actions

If you want to win I’d run to the outside and off tackle, not up the middle. Misdirections and stuff off the edge give the Bills and their crappy LB squad fits.

I think we have to stay away from Jairus Byrd

He’s leading the NFL in interceptions and essentially takes away the middle of the field on his best days. I don’t want to see a wobbly Matt Ryan pass in his hands.

Buffalo's pass D can bite you, indeed

As a team they lead the league in INTs, as well as the lowest QB Rating allowed (under 60). They also rank 3rd in passing yards per game, and per attempt.

by tom slick on Dec 22, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions

They lead the league in INTs, but only have a +3 TO differential.

We have what seems like the fewest INTs, and we’re positive (Albeit only after the Jets game)

I have a feeling the Bills will be giving the ball away a few times this week. So long as we take care of it, we’ll be fine.

More play action!

I think the Falcons need to Keep running the the ball, but need more play action off the run. They are to predictable. Just my opinion.

My defensive strategy.

I think it goes without saying that we need to make their QB (whoever it is) beat us through the air.

If we’re going to roll safety help, roll it towards Lee Evans.

T.O. can be covered 1 on 1. While he is in fantastic shape, he can be covered man-up, easily.

I think the Bills have a decent pass catching TE, too. And Fred Jackson is a threat in the backfield.

One thing the Jets didn’t do is run screen plays (at least I don’t remember any) we should expect at least a few of them from the Bills to alleviate some of the pressure we’ll be bringing.

I’m hoping this’ll be an easy victory, but I don’t call them the Heart Attack Birds for nothin’.

32nd ranked run D

I don’t care who is carrying the ball, as long as someone is on almost every down. Also, this is a great game to get Matt Ryan back in a groove to finish out the season strong. Need for him to be at 60% completion percentage at the least. Two-Thirds run v. One-Third pass… Simple as pie. Defense: Eight in the box to stuff the run and force their Twentieth string QB to beat us down the field.

Fun fact for you guys.

ESPN has none other than the Falcons defense projected to be the highest scoring fantasy defense this week.

All I can say is, “Lolololololololololol.”

Wouldnt be suprised if you did…

We are not a good offense at all, and we’re starting Brohm whose never taken a snap and only been with us about 5-6 weeks. I am excited to see him and hoping he can do something but you guys if you play a smart, ball possesion game should take care of us …

…But thats why they play the game!!!

and regarding our run D. Yes its bad, yes it needs to be fixed but to be totally honest we keep rb’s in check most the game but every game they break a long one or two to skew those numbers a bit, but yes we are still a bad run support team.

Playing for pride

Hopefully the boys show up to play Sunday so we can try for the ever elusive back to back winning seasons. Injuries ravaged our season, but a winning season would definitely be a nice thing to hang our hats on considering the injuries. Hopefully Atlanta is smart and does not play Turner the last 2 games though. We need that boy if we are going to make some noise in ’10! LETS GO FALCONS!!! Stop T-eam O-bliterator

Chargers scored 80 total points on them.
Philly and Baltimore Scored at least 30.
Other teams had anemic offenses, or simply struggled. Steelers, Redskins, Jags, Raiders, Giants (27) with the Manning injury, Cowboys before Miles Austin broke out.
