A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Watching Out For Jets CB Darrelle Revis

Darrelle Revis is a beast.

Arguably one of the best cornerbacks in the league, Revis will be a major obstacle to overcome on Sunday. As good as Roddy White is, I'm not extremely confident that he'll be able to get separation from Revis, and the Jets already have a swarming defense that is going to put Chris Redman or (maybe) Matt Ryan on their heels. They're also one of the more capable teams in the league when it comes to covering tight ends. Unless Michael Turner is making his triumphant return this week (again, maybe), the Falcons are going to have to go through the air often. It just may not work.

So the question I pose to you, dear readers, is how we can effectively get around Revis and that tough Jets D this weekend. What will it take for the Falcons to have an effective game through the air? Should they forget about it and just turn to Snelling and Norwood early? What, why, where, how?

Go!

I was worried about this game before we played Philly and NO

even though the Jets were miserable back then.

I think we will have hard time passing the ball, as both Redman and Ryan struggled this season against good pass rush. With Roddy covered, a lot will depend on which Jenkins shows up – the one that dropped a bomb in the Saints game or the one who caught one in the same game. Although there won’t be many deep passes – mostly screens. Playing Weems as slot receiver might help.

I expect this will be a low scoring game, and our success this time around may depend on how our defense performs. If they can play like in the second half of the Saints game, and along with special teams set up favorable field position for our offense, we can win the game.

And yes, this will be a big test for Bryant – but he already showed confidence.

100% right

And it’s been mentioned a lot in many places, but learning a few screen plays to offset blitzes might actually be a good idea.

What's a screen pass?

I don’t think this team knows how to run a screen pass… Unless you mean the WR screen where we immediately pass out to someone with no blockers and a defender five feet away.

I think Norwood would run a nasty screen, letting Dahl and Baker get out in front of him, but noooooooo Malarky(sic) doesn’t run those screens…

Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish — a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow — to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested...Res ipsa loquitur. Let the good times roll.

Huuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrreeeeeeeeeeeeck'ed!

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Ditto!

Screens, and Wildcat Formations should help too.

One thing that we've done pretty well this season

Is spread the ball around. We have a fair number of capable receivers, including two running backs who can make plays after the catch. Against a top-flight corner back, you just have to make him a non-factor. Sure, Roddy may not have a career day, but if we can come out with a win by passing to everyone else on the field, I don’t think he’ll complain.

Its true. I'm a Falcoholic! I just can't live without Falcohol!

The Jets have the best Pass Defense in the League

Not going to lie, this game is a good opportunity to get back to doing what we are SUPPOSED to do best: running the football.

Ideally, we get Turner and Dahl back into the lineup and we start pounding. Then we use that to set the table for play action to Tony G. I’m pretty sure that Revis is just going to shadow White all game. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try to get it to him, but our bread and butter for this game has to be running the football.

I know what we should run!

We should run a scre……..oh wait. Our OC doesn’t know what those are.

I’m out of ideas.

Cold and windy Sunday...

Being that the weather isn’t going to be conducive to a pass attack game plan, we are going to need to give them a heavy dose of Snelling. He is from Toms River New Jersey, which is about an hour and a half south of Giants Stadium. I’m sure he will want to put on another show in front of his home state like he did against the Giants, in the same stadium, several weeks ago (25 for 76 & 2 touches). He is the type of runner that needs the reps to get in a rhythm. Throw Norwood in on third down every now and again and that should be enough to keep the D on their toes. Ground and pound with Snelling toting the rock and Ovie leading. Throw in some Play Action over the top to Gonzo, and that should be enough to keep the O on the field a long time. KISS… Keep It Simple Stupid! is the way to go.

I expect

to see lots of running, screens, and maybe a long ball or two. Not too much short or medium passing. I think we win it by a TD. The Jets are not very good.

Even a one-point win would do at this point

The Jets aren’t good, but we aren’t either. And these Jets held the mighty Panthers and Bucs (our neighboors that gave us hard time) to just two and one FG, respectively.

does anyone know why/how snelling jumped ahead of norwood on the depth chart? if this is really the last year we are going to have him, why not get all we can from our most explosive runner in this game? i say let snelling be the change of pace

by BigSkee on Dec 15, 2009 5:26 PM EST reply actions

Norwood doesn't look as explosive since he's returned

And Snelling has proven he can handle the workload when called upon. I think we should be using Norwood more often, but not to the point where Snelling gets a handful of carries.

we should take a note from the saints use of reggie bush

similar to norwood, bush is not an every down back but very useful at the goal line… but, on second thought. maybe we should stick to snelling four times up the gut for zero points. that’s a better plan imo..

Agree

Maybe he’s still struggling with that hip flexor. But it is pretty obvious that the coaches/management don’t think he’s much more than a 3rd down back, anway… They’ve shown that over, and over, and over again.

yeah that will be the day.

Wasn’t Grimes interception against the Giants three weeks ago, the last Turnover we’ve forced (asides from opponents missed field goals)

Screens, Draw Plays and Play Action Passes...

Pound the ball up the middle until defense rotates up then mix screens, play action passes and run some draw plays in obvious passing downs. Defense play like they are at the Dome and score points every time we have the ball. This will give us a chance!
