Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints Open Thread

New Orleans Saints at Atlanta Falcons, Dec 13, 2009 1:00 PM EST

Remember how last week, I said the Eagles game was a big game for us? Well, this is even bigger. This is a giant game. This game is so big, it's threatening Tokyo. You get the picture.

I'd ask that each of you bring your A game to today's comment thread, on the off chance that us sending enormous amounts of positive energy the Falcons way bring us victory. Stranger things have happened, I think. After all, someone let me write a Falcons blog!

Follow along after the jump, my friends.

What? Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints, 1 p.m. EST

Where? Georgia Dome, Atlanta, Georgia

Weather? No weather for you!

Injuries? Chris Houston and Justin Peelle are out. Everyone else on our entire roster, apparently, is questionable. Joy.

The Saints have a huge list of probables, but I expect almost every single one of them to play. LB Scott Fujita and CB Jabari Greer are out, which should help our offense.

Odds? You don't really want them this week, honestly.

Foe? You all know to  go visit Canal Street Chronicles, right?

GO FALCONS! Let's kick these Saints square in the ass!

Both of those are fine by me

Why risk your franchise offensive players over a game that doesn’t matter in the long run? Sucks for today, but you’ve got to be smart that way.

I'll be working, once again, through the bulk of this game

But I’ll be here in spirit. And also probably midway through the third quarter.

May the best (our) team win!

Hey guys.

Just got back from work. How’s the game? All I’ve seen is Brees stat line. 17/19 (something like that) for 212 and 2 TDs.

That’s……beyond pathetic. The fact that we’re down 7 means the O must be doing something right.

Seriously, why is our D so terrible? And furthermore, why were they so good against the Dolphins? The Phins are a decent team. Our D hasn’t been good since……the 9ers game.

I agree with that. We definitely need someone better to run the D. We do have a lot of young guys who with the right coach can develop nicely. But first we need some height in the secondary. Receivers keep getting taller, but our DBs are shrinking.

A couple key FAs and some depth for the d line will go a long way.

4:42 left in the game.

We need 3 to tie. Redman is the QB. Do I feel more deja vu coming? We need to be smart with the ball. Plenty of time left. DO NOT….I REPEAT…..DO NOT ABANDON THE RUN. WE MUST HOLD THE BALL UNTIL 0:00 is left.

Now that any hope of the playoffs is gone

It’s time to start rooting for breaking the curse. It’s perfectly reasonable that we win out, given our opposition for the rest of the season, and so we should root hard for it.

But it’s really time to look at this team through the jaded eyes I know we all have somewhere. What’s wrong with them? Who needs to stay and who needs to go? Because damnit, I want to win. I want to win so bad it hurts.

At the end of the day

The problem is that we’re not good enough. We don’t quite have the personnel we need to win and our coaches make terrible calls at exactly the wrong time. That doesn’t happen to good teams.

by Jebidillah on Dec 13, 2009 4:02 PM EST up reply actions

Eagles fan here, happy to see yall almost beat them at the end. Terrible thing falling short, but it seems every team just falls short of the Saints. I think they’re overrated as hell, but that’s neither here nor there.

The play calling on that last offensive drive reminded me a lot of Andy Reid, with the passing play 1 yard short of the first down to a guy with 2 defenders on him. Really disappointing, almost as disappointing as that reverse play call.

Overall, without the BAD playcalling yall with that game. Without the missed field goal from pissing range, the Skins win that game

by kelvis on Dec 13, 2009 4:00 PM EST up reply actions

i know all too well about the refs. I think that the NFL has certain teams that they like, and well the refs have a bias towards those teams. The saints and their feel good story seem to have that bias working for them

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Dec 13, 2009 4:03 PM EST up reply actions

It's true.

Remember the interview with Tim Donaghy and he said he based his bets off of other ref biases, but didn’t change his calls at all? Call me crazy, but I believe him. It’s a brilliant way to win money by not dirtying your hands with horrible calls. I know it’s out there, regardless of what Mike & Mike claim.

it’s like with any sport, there will be biases. Refs won’t see certain fouls/penalties because of their personal opinion on the game. I won’t go as far to say that the refs influence the overall product, but they do provide a push to a game that’s teetering on the edge.

by CoburnsCuddleBuddy on Dec 13, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

yea ur Eagles got screwed by the refs in the cowboys game

its getting to where every play needs to be reviewed , esp saints and pats games

by kelvis on Dec 13, 2009 4:06 PM EST up reply actions

As much as we got screwed, the playcalling put the Eagles in that place to begin with. Andy Reid and company should claim that as their own responsibility. As for the Cowboys, they’ll lose again in December, led by that QB who couldn’t carry Aikman’s shell. The Cowboys will crumble, rest assured

They sniffed it out perfectly. Roddy didn’t pull the backer that was spying Redman, and it caused him to come up and hit Snelling once Redman eyed Snelling.
