A Look Ahead and the Bleak Prospect
We're facing the Philadelphia Eagles minus our wunderkind QB. There's not much else to say, really.
Philadelphia Eagles
Where: Georgia Dome
When: Sunday December 6th, 2009 @ 1:00pm
Network: FOX
Why: Because Eagles and Falcons are natural enemies.
Importance: Serious Business. Duh, again
Notes: No Matt Ryan. Perhaps no Turner. Perhaps no Baker or Dahl either. What did we do to deserve this?
The Falcons win if: Matt Ryan's turf toe mysteriously heals the morning of game day.
The Eagles win if: they realize we've secretly replaced our secondary with Oompa Loompas.
Prediction: Falcons lose.
New Orleans Saints 2: The Season Definer
Where: Georgia Dome
When: Sunday December 13th, 2009 @ 1:00pm
Network: FOX
Why: Divisional Game
Importance: Serious Business.
Notes: If we win this, I will do a backflip off a moving truck and upload it onto YouTube.
The Falcons win if: a miracle occurs.
The Saints win if: their bus doesn't break down on the way to Atlanta.
Prediction: Falcons lose.
New York Jets
Where: Giants Stadium
When: Sunday December 20th, 2009 @ 1:00pm
Network: FOX
Why: Because New Yorkers couldn’t get enough of us the first go round against the Giants.
Importance: Serious Business
Notes: Really, really, really hoping the crappy Sanchez shows up. Also, hope we show up as well.
Prediction: Falcons lose
Buffalo Bills
Where: Georgia Dome
When: Sunday December 27th, 2009 @ 1:00pm
Network: CBS
Why: The Bills aren't looking too good. Uh oh...
Importance: Serious Business
Notes: Even mediocre QBs look awesome against our defense. But hopefully, the Bills are in such turmoil that they won't notice that.
Prediction: Falcons win.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers With a Vengeance
Where: Raymond James Stadium
When: Sunday January 3rd, 2009 @ 1:00pm
Network: FOX
Why: Divisional Game
Importance: Serious Business
Notes: Tampa won't make the same mistakes twice, especially on their home turf.
Prediction: Falcons lose.
Current season record: 6-5 (Wins against MIA, CAR, SF, CHI, WAS, TB; losses against NE, DAL, NO, CAR, NYG)
Current season prediction: 7-9 (Wins: MIA, CAR, SF, CHI, WAS, TB, , BUF, TB; Loss: NE, DAL, CAR, NO, NYG, PHI, NO, NYJ, TB)

Not so fast, my friend
I don’t think we’re doomed to 7-9 just yet. 8-8 at least, and possibly 9-7. A few reasons why:
- We’re not the only team that’s still going to get hit by the injury bug. As the season winds down, so do bodies… even young ones… and sometimes major ones. I’m not speaking any curses on anybody, but we won’t be the only team with major injury losses.
- Falcons were likely gonna lose to the Saints and Eagles with or without Matty Ice, the Burner, and Harvey “I’m gonna eat your face for breakfast” Dahl. Give them 2 games to rest up, get fired up after some losses, and make a final push towards a winning record.
- The Eagles are a Jekyll & Hyde team. The Falcons have at least some sorta homefield mojo. Even with half the team injured, this upcoming week could be a surprise victory. Raise your hand if you thought the Eagles would lose to the Raiders or need a 90 yard drive to beat the Redskins. Now put your hand down, no one can see you through the computer.
- The Jets, Bills, and Bucs really just aren’t that good, and we will have a fire lit after the Eagles & Saints to finish strong.
- I just gotta hope that this is the year. Even after wishing all those sportscasters and writers wouldn’t jinx us by constantly saying “this is the year the Falcons finally get back-to-back winning seasons”… still gotta hope that this is the year.

The Eagles lost to the Raiders because
They had Jeremiah Trotter starting at MLB and because his FF opponent started Brian Westbrook so he didn’t run the ball (He plays against this guy alot). Trotter was swiftly replaced with Witherspoon and with Westbrook hurt he can run the ball more without hurting his FF team.

The negativity is staggering.
It seems people don’t realize we’re allowed to play a back-up QB if Ryan can’t go. We don’t have to line up with nobody behind center.
Sure, Redman isn’t as good as Ryan – but he is good. Hell, he performed admirably last week, and you could practically see the dust from my seat in 350. This week, he has the mentality of a starter, and will take all the reps in practice. And again, HE’S GOOD.
We’re even deeper at RB, by the way. Jerious will have a game back under him, and Snelling has proven worthy of a roster spot.
We’re probably going to lose to the Saints. But that’s it.
Oh, by the way – the Eagles ain’t the healthiest team either. And even when they are healthy, they can lose to the Raiders. We’re NOT looking at the regular NFC champs of a few years ago.

Yep, no Jackson, no Westbrook
They’ll have McCoy, who’s a solid running back, but our run defense has played great. Obvious concern is McNabb throwing the ball all over the lot, but we’ll see.

Think Positive!
I agree with you. I’m sick and tired of this negative BS, let’s have some positivity flowing around here. That’s right. The Eagles LOST to the Raiders, and that seems to get lost in all of this so called “doom and gloom”.

agree
Even with Ryan down, and half the team down, they can pull this one off if they play with their hearts. If not, neither Ryan nor Turner will help. They just brought in a new kicker-long snapper tandem, and that should help boost confidence of the whole team.
As a side note – everyone points out that Eagles were beaten by Oakland. But let’s keep in mind it was just an abberation, they ran the ball only 14 or something times, and they kept throwing the ball. And hadn’t scored a TD against the Raiders’ secondary. Ironically, exactly the same thing should be fine for them against us, but we do have to stop the run first, and expect a miracle from our pass defence.

I dont see you losing that much.I think the Saints is a lose for you.I think the Bucs play you tough but you win.But I believe you beat the Jets,Eagles and Bills.
I also believe we wont get much love on your power ranking’s this week although we totally exposed the Pats for what they are we gave up 17 points

Mark Bradley is kind of hit or miss for me
But he has a great article on the AJC, and though admittedly I slurp some Falcons kool-aid I think his logic is very sound.
It’s disappointing that Ryan won’t be able to play for the Eagles game, which is an important match-up for a tiebreaker. But it’s also worth note that neither Ryan nor Turner has been placed on IR. Our last three games are against the Jets, Bills, and Bucs. We can beat all three of those teams with a healthy Ryan and a healthy Turner, which would end our season at 9-7 assuming we don’t pull one off against the Eagles and Saints, which I still believe we can do. The Bucs game was a bad game, but we’re a very good home team, and it’s not going to be easy for anyone to escape the Dome with a victory.
Again, I’m a massive kool-aid slurper, but if we do what we SHOULD do down the stretch (beat the Jets, Bills, and Bucs) and steal even one from the Eagles or Saints, we’re still at 10-6. I have some faith that this coaching staff will come out with a little fire this week.

Okay, everyone leave Tloz alone...
I don’t like the predictions either, but i can’t argue with them, and a lot of people seem to be confusing “reality” with “negativity” and being fair weather.
The fact of the matter is that of our 6 remaining games, the game at home vs. Tampa Bay was arguably the easiest one, and we STILL only won it by the narrowest margin possible. Yes, Philly is a strange team and a win against them is possible but not likely with as many injuries as we have. And since this team hasn’t been able to stay healthy for the first 11 games, it’s hard to imagine that they will for the final 5.
That being said, even if we get every single starter back, how encouraging is that really? Assuming they do shake the rust off immediately and are playing at 100%, has anyone honestly been impressed with any of the Falcons performances this year, apart from SF? The defense has become a joke (our secondary is literally the laughing stock of the NFL), the offense has been an unbelievable disappointment, and we are having to hold open tryouts to find someone who can hit a field goal.
I’m not gonna say that it’s impossible for us to turn the ship around because crazier things have happened, but if you’re gonna look at this from a totally logical standpoint, Tloz’s predictions are totally reasonable. I don’t like ‘em, but then there hasn’t been much about this season I have liked, including the $ I wasted on season tickets.
by cheshire falcon on Dec 1, 2009 9:59 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
Not saying that's incorrect
But despite all those factors we’re STILL 6-5. We haven’t run up the score on anyone like any of us have hoped and we didn’t improve at all in the secondary, but we have played decently in spite of all that. Outside of the Dallas game we’ve never been blown out of the water.
Tloz’s predictions are reasonable but they are at the low end of a spectrum of reasonableness. At the high end is probably a 9-7 record, and 10-6 is stretching it.
by LetsGoFalcons on Dec 1, 2009 10:06 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
"Reality"
is the disappointment that when the organization recognized a significant weakness in the secondary we picked up Tye Hill instead of, oh, say McAlister or McKenzie, both of whom played better cornerback last night than I’ve seen from any Falcon (Grimes occasionally excepted) all year. “Negativity” is assuming that the problems and the injuries the Falcons are dealing with will necessarily result in another losing season. Offense can still score enough points to win a game as long as defense finds a way to play mediocre pass defense, which they’ve managed to do once or twice this season. It is pathetic that a visiting Saints fan has more faith in the Falcons than some “fans” posting here. Fair weather, I say again.
by elroy on Dec 1, 2009 10:11 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
True
That was pretty disconcerting to watch McKenzie and McAllister play well. The logic seemed sound at first that they might not be up to game speed but man both of them looked pretty good last night.
by LetsGoFalcons on Dec 1, 2009 10:18 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
agreed on McKenzie and McAllister...
i’m not gonna start bashing Dimitroff for not getting them because the man obviously has a pretty good track record, but i hated watching two guys light it up last night that we could have easily had in our backfield.
one thing i like about Dimitroff is that he doesn’t always make the obvious move (i.e., getting Larry Johnson when Turner went down)… but on the other hand, that also kind of annoys me. sometimes it’s the obvious move for a reason: because it makes sense. and that move may have made a lot more sense than getting a younger guy who was a bust for another team, and appears to be a bust for us as well.
by cheshire falcon on Dec 1, 2009 10:30 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
when you are not making obvious moves
you are basically gambling and at the end of the day there could be a big reward or the opposite.
But there are possibly two explanations:
- either our FO missed those obvious choices (now, again, the word obvious is not the right word, not many people thought that secondary could kill Brady), or
- the saints were able to build a system, and their D functions well regardless of who is inserted – more or less. there were too many veterans who succeeded with them this year.
The first thing I would do in the offseason is find a replacement for BG.
by Gemini-RU on Dec 1, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm inclined to think it's systemic
As their secondary has been plug and play just about from the get go. You have to take into account the fact that Charles Grant and Will Smith are two of the best book-ends in the NFC.
by LetsGoFalcons on Dec 1, 2009 10:51 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
exactly
so unless we fix our system (and that can only occur if we change DC) we can keep putting in new players and keep saying how they all suck.
what made me think this way – the fact that ALL of our players in the secondary and pass rush were bad, with some rare exceptions. And this is the sign of the problem being systemic.
by Gemini-RU on Dec 1, 2009 5:12 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
let's not forget that Brady was on his back a few times
the pass rush is really what got the Pats offense out of rhythm. i’m not trying to take anything away for the cornerbacks, they did a stellar job. it’s just that when a QB has to get rid of the ball more quickly, it definitely helps the secondary.

by armchair quarterback on Dec 1, 2009 5:56 PM EST up reply actions 1 recs
but, ....
don’t you think that a franchise has to earn the faith of their fans? I mean i like Dimitroff and Smith and i believe we are headed in the right direction, but given the history of this franchise (which is all i really have to go from), i have to have that proven to me. and until i do, i’m going to expect the worst, because, guess what? that’s all i’ve ever known! so i don’t see how that’s “fair weather”. I mean if i keep touching an electric fence for 43 years and it keeps shocking me, does that make me fair weather to think that’s probably gonna shock me the 44th time i touch it?
this is what’s so frustrating about being a sports fan in Atlanta. we constantly get criticized for not supporting our pro teams enough, but our critics conveniently ignore the fact that our pro teams have never given us anything to support. and don’t tell me the Braves, because they were the worst at breaking your heart over and over again, which is why they were eventually unable to sell out playoff games. no one wanted to get emotionally invested in a team that was inevitably going to choke in the postseason. and i don’t see why that makes them bad fans.
alright, sorry, lot of pent up bitterness coming out now :) i’ll stop typing…
by cheshire falcon on Dec 1, 2009 10:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well,
We’re Falcons fans. That comes with a lot of deeply ingrained cynicism, occasional bitterness and lots of disappointment. If we wanted to root for consistently winning teams, there’s the Steelers, Colts, Pats, etc. All I’m saying is that this team has a lot more going for it than a great many Falcons teams I’ve rooted for, and has potential, even with the injuries we currently face, to pull out a winning season. It is a stretch to think we’re going to beat the Saints this year (possible, but then there’s “reality”) but the current roster matches up reasonably well with current Eagles roster, and while Jets at Meadowlands won’t be easy, I like our chances because Sanchez isn’t a cold weather QB which negates a big advantage yankee outdoor teams usually have at home late in the season. Somebody’s bound to come off our bench and light ’em up. Hell, play Coy Wire as a pulling guard or something. Go Falcons!
by elroy on Dec 1, 2009 10:44 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with this
It certainly isn’t fairweather if you’ve followed this team for as long as most of us who post here have (I’m assuming at least since I’m new, but this is certainly a hardcore fan blog)
I’m definitely not feeling too good about this team right now, and it’s the same feeling I’ve had before so many times. I still have faith, since I always have had faith and always will. I know our fortune has to turn around eventually, and truly believe that I will see this team win a Super Bowl before I die.
All that being said though, we’ve been pretty unlucky this year, but the positive thing is we have a coaching staff in place that will not let the people we have left on the roster give up. Our birds will fight to the bitter end, even if its with the entire second team starting on both sides of the ball. That’s one thing that does make me feel good, since if we do not break the curse this year, it will certainly happen soon.
What’s 5-10 more years of waiting for greatness when we’ve already waited 43?

fair points...
and i’m not entirely willing to say that the season is over because anything can happen.
i think the reason i tend to be negative is because in the 20 years i’ve been a Falcons fan, i’ve had other moments where I thought things were gonna turn around and then they didn’t. so i’m just hoping this isn’t another one of those times. and yes, every one of those times, i can look back and come up with great explanations as to why it didn’t turn out well, but i’m hoping that isn’t the case now too… like as much as I like Matt Ryan’s future, am I gonna look back on this in 10 years and say “yeah, of course Matt Ryan ended up being a bust, he wasn’t ”? you wanna think things are different, but you need a reason to believe that. and part of what i needed was an encouraging season this year, which i’m not getting at the moment.
the big frustration for me this year has been our offense. with as many weapons we’ve had on the field, it’s absurd to me that we can’t put more points on the board. we should have been one of the top 5 offenses in the league, and i don’t know where we currently stand, but it’s nowhere near the top 5. and the worst part is that there’s no explanation as to why they’ve been so bad. one week it’s the running game. the next week Ryan throws 3 interceptions. the next week our receivers can’t catch. now everyone is injured. it’s just always something and they can’t ever seem to put it together.

To address something I've seen crop up a lot in recent days
I can understand the frustration with the negativity. It’s easy to read what tloz and I have posted in recent weeks and picture us as a couple of bitter old men who have come to hate this Falcons team and think they can’t possibly win any more games ever. While we are bitter, I can assure you we’re also young. What was my point again?
Oh yeah. Please don’t ever accuse me of being a fair-weather fan. I respect everyone’s right to take issue with a negative outlook, but don’t question another fan’s strength of fandom based on that. Fact is, no matter what I predict in the week leading up to the game, I start off every Falcons game believing we’re going to win, as irrational as that may be. I follow them week in and week out and love this damn team regardless of how terribly they play or how many injuries they suffer. I don’t doubt that every single one of you on this site is the same way.
So I guess what I’m saying is, let’s keep these discussions to the merit of the arguments being made, which is mostly being done. If the end of the season does actually go south, the last thing I want is a witch hunt for fans who aren’t dedicated enough.

the theory that some opinions are valid and others are ‘out of bounds’ is bogus, especially when it is dictated by popularity. i can be a die hard fan and hold fully different opinions about the direction of my team. nobody has a monopoly on commitment, and our common bond should cause us to entertain each other’s divergent opinions instead of ad hominem dismissal.
tloz i respect a fan who errors on the side of blase realism as opposed to a naive optimist. anyways, we all hope that they win every game they play so wtf people, less rhetoric more understanding.

To be fair ...
There’s a fine line. If it’s reasoned doubt, then fair enough. But when your rants are nonsensical and lack any sort of rationale (besides your frustration), then it’s probably fair to expect some flack. All the more reason to make the “Rant Fest” thread a permanent addition to the Falcoholic in my opinion.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

And I’m sure I’ve been guilty of that myself.

Dave, I’ve been a Falcons fan since the 1970’s. And I’ve been through the ringer, believe me. I may be one of the most dedicated fans out there, and I really get on these guys when the tough get going, but I’m a optimist, and that keeps me going from day to day. I love talking Falcons with you and everyone else here, it’s great! I do think that the Falcons will defeat the Eagles on Sunday to go to 7-5, which will make it 2 to get to 9. I do agree with what you said, by the way, but being negative is not my way, my friend.

We need optimists like you and War Wolf here to even us out. It’s important to have a mix of views.
My personal feeling is that if we can steal the Eagles or Saints game, we can eke out two wins in the final weeks of the season barring any other catastrophic injuries. With the way things have gone recently, I’m still holding cards close to my chest until the Falcons do get one of those wins.

I do agree with you Dave, I’m just like you, and I appreciate your kind comment. I think we can get that Eagles game due to the fact that they are a Jekyll and Hyde team, and the Saints can be beaten as well. The schedule looks good for us, and I definetly see 9-7 or 10-6. I’ll take the back to back winning seasons first, then, look at the postseaon. Eagles first before anything else!

pessimists like me to drag you back down.
Nah but seriously I think we can beat the Eagles if we can squeeze any ounce of talent or ability out of our defensive backs. I think the large part of the problem is our defensive lines pressure, or lack there of.
I think that Abe has to show up these last few weeks or else we could be in for a rocky finish. He (and any other lineman) in my view is the difference between 10-6 and tloz’s dreaded 7-9 prediction.

Turf Toe
Maybe if you are a running back. Back up on your heels, release ball, repeat.
by falcons11 on Dec 1, 2009 2:27 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Let me rephrase that...
“Back up on your heels, lose balance, take sack, repeat.”
It’s nearly impossible to move without use of the toes, and it’s even more impossible to move efficiently without the toes. When you plant your foot, you don’t plant your heel, you plant the ball of your foot using the toes to help clamp down.
Proper drop back of the QB requires quick movement at times, requiring the use of the ball of the foot and also the toes.
Lack of toe usage hurts much more than one might think.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!"

what if it's not just turf toe?
Is there such possibility that our Smitty and Ryan are simply not disclosing what exactly is wrong? If it were something that could heal soon, they’d at least wait until they HAVE to file a report on injuries.
I’d want to see Ryan play even through some pain, but if it is indeed something serious, I’d take “ordinary” Redman over suffering Ryan.

Interesting take on the rest of the season
Right now I don’t contribute “potential” future loses to Ryan being hurt. His numbers were stinking up the place a little and his confidence seemed to be a little shaken. Redman is good enough to win. He is experienced, has a decent skill set and doesn’t get too shaken under pressure. It might be good for Matt to have some bench time, just a shame there’s an injury involved. I’m more concerned about who would take Redman’s spot if he goes down. Then we’re in trouble.
We’ll be okay at RB as long as Norwood can stay health. The OL is a little of a concern. The big issue is our non-existant defense, as we’ve all said all season. That’s why well lose some of the remaining games.
One reason why NO’s defense works is because all of their opponents are playing catch up for the entire game. When a team gets down by 14 in the first quarter they have to throw the ball a lot. The DB’s can sit back in a tight zone and the DL and LB’s can rush the QB. All they have to do it protect from deep completions, sort of like a really aggressive prevent D.

dude i hope this prediction is wrong too
but that being said, there is no reason to assume that this assesment isn’t very, very possible. i hope we go undefeated from here out, and maybe we do win 4 more games, or whatever, but this could easily happen.
as smitty says, it’s a process. we are just missing a few more pieces and some maturity. if we can keep winning this season it’s all gravey.

Yikes Tloz ...
Can’t say I agree. But I respect your right to be wrong.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

If I was at all phased by being a falcons fan, I would have jumped in 99
When we followed a Super Bowl appearance with a 5-11 record.

Nothing more frustrating than...
The 1981 season. If you want more on this, I’ll be happy to discuss this with you. You thought 99 was bad…

Personally
I always figured that there was no way things could get worse than ’99 although this year is close given the amount of shit i talked to my friends prior to September.
Glad to know that there were more painful memories that preceded my birth so that I don’t have to carry that with me. lol
Gotta LOVE being a Falcons fan!

I really don't believe
the falcons have no pride at home. Losing back to back games at home? Really?
Atlanta will win a championship....someday

Well, we won the last home game.
We’re gonna need the crowd to be hella loud.
Maybe even louder than it’s ever been if we’re gonna get 9 wins. I just hope that the fans understand this and show up nice and loud.
"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!"

We're undefeated at the Dome.
Let’s hope it stays that way. We do get loud. Hopefully my section will continue to rattle my tooth fillings.

Man that was quick
I gotta go back and reference your previous outlooks tloz but I highly doubt we are suddenly going 7-9. Let’s not reach for the paper bag masks just yet buddy.
Matty Ice and the Burner are out (damn whoever let Turner on the field on Sunday!) but Redman is one of the most capable backups in the league and the Eagles are pretty banged up too. I will be watching in enemy territory (South Philly) on Sunday with my Falcons t-shirt on and I intend on witnessing a Falcons upset. Pray for my safety.
Maybe I had a few too many swigs of the Kool-Aid but I am holding out for a 4-1 finish to the season (Saints L, they are awesome right now) and us squeaking into the playoffs.

I thought we Eagles fans were a negative bunch
Trust me, the Falcons will be in the game with a chance to win on Sunday. Put it like this: Chris Redman isn’t Matt Ryan, but he’s better than Jamarcus Russell. Tony Gonzalez is a lot better than Zach Miller, who managed to score a 90-yard touchdown on the Eagles. Plus, you can never discount the Georgia Dome factor.
If anything, it’s the Eagles who need to be worried, as we are without Desean Jackson, Brian Westbrook, and our defense is banged up. Asante Samuel can’t tackle (so Roddy White will rack up some YAC) and Sheldon Brown has a gimpy hamstring.
