Matt Ryan to miss Philadelphia game with injury

From NFL.com, just about ten minutes ago, and the Falcoholic about 20 minutes ago- Matt Ryan was diagnosed with turf toe after being injured on the first drive against the Buccaneers. Some thoughts and panic after the jump.

Star-divide

That's not a good sign. You can argue that Chris Redman is a good QB, and he does have starting experience. However, going into a must-win with a playoff-caliber team, that's not exactly a manage-the-game situation. Andy Reid subscribes to the vertical, pass up and down the field philosophy and he most likely won't shy away from it against the bad Falcons secondary. If Chris Redman can score, the load is relatively light, but considering the extent of Michael Turner's injury hasn't been revealed, you're asking for a guy who hasn't thrown 20 TDs in a nine-year career to be your big-time QB.

This FanPost was written by one of The Falcoholic's talented readers. It does not necessarily reflect the views of The Falcoholic.

Gizflam!

Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish — a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow — to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested...Res ipsa loquitur. What are the odds...

that our defense steps up and has a monster game this week?

Slim to none I guess. I should just lower my expectations now so I don’t get let down. I’ll still be at the game cheering the team on like I have been every week for years. There just won’t really be a confidence in my cheering like there would have been if we still had the iceman in there.

Have Faith

Hey LSFF, Have Faith, the Falcons are going to show up and play, and you better be there cheering your head off, because I would be if I lived in your neck of the woods. Been a Falcs fan since the late 70’s. Anything is possible.

I already wrote in another thread

Injury status of our o-line starters is equally important – if they can’t make it (Baker & co), it will be much tougher for Redman and for our RB’s.
And the fact Philly might be missing Westbrook and Jackson won’t be of much help

by Gemini-RU on Nov 30, 2009 4:52 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Injuries are a part of the game.

But Atlanta has been hit more than any team this year.

DeSean and Westbrook may be out, but it will be hard to defeat Philly if these guys do not play :

Harry D
Brian Williams
Matt Ryan
Sam Baker
Burner
Harvey Diehl (sp.)
Peria Jerry

Still, if anyone can pull it off, the Falcons can.

Freddie Falcon reportedly will suit up !

Latest report on NFL Network is that Celek, Eagles TE, may have torn ligaments, but may still play.

by WarWolf on Nov 30, 2009 6:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Injuries.

Well, they suck.

(On a different note. I thought turf toe was a result of the skin on the toe being ripped off/torn blister style, or something. Maybe I’m wrong. If I’m right, he COULD play with it if it was bandaged up. It’d hurt like hell, but he could still play. It’s not the kind of debilitating hurt that would prevent you from playing. That is, of course, if my understanding of turf toe is correct.)

Anywho, we’re without Ryan. I don’t know if any of our missing OL will play. Turner must be tougher than sin if he hasn’t been ruled out this week.

However, as others have pointed out, Jackson has a concussion (they may not be able to play him with the new focus on concussions lately) Westbrook is Westbrook (Always injured) and Celek won’t be his usual self (aka Coverable, even by our secondary.) if he really has some torn tendons.

McCoy is a solid backup RB, so I wouldn’t expect much fall off there. Philly is as inconsistent as we are (almost losing to the Skins, in their case.) so we could essentially consider it to be an even match, despite our records. Their defense is a little (read: a ton) more stout than ours, but their loss of Jackson (if indeed he doesn’t play) would be a much bigger wound to their offense/special teams than our drop off from Ryan to Redman, assuming Redman has a decent game.

Don’t fret too hard just yet. Let’s see how this week develops before we hit the panic button.

"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!"

Philly has talent with 2 super rookies McCoy and Maclin

McNabb and Reid provide exp

But their D misses Johnson and Dawkins still

And they may be without Westbrook Jackson and Celek

Eagles will be favored and are darn good.

But this year they have laid eggs vs Dallas and the Raiders.

Also, there is one unseen advantage for Atlanta – Vick is on their team !

my hats off to Redman, but...

the problem is that with him at the helm, we still only scored 17 points (10 if you don’t count the very last second) against a 1-10 team. my hope is that we just don’t get embarrassed too bad this weekend, then get healthy and win out.

quick discussion about the secondary...

just wondering, how would you guys go about fixing our secondary in the offseason? i mean would you keep any one of these players? Owens looks promising, but if i’m Dimitroff, i have to consider cutting every single one of them. But is that doable? Then we might have to actually (gasp!) sign a free agent, unless we’re gonna use every single pick in the draft on our backfield.

Just curious what you guys think…

by cheshire falcon on Nov 30, 2009 10:32 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

One piece

I think it’s only missing one piece: a legit #1 CB. It also needs pressure. DB’s can stick with their coverage for several seconds but after 6-7, they’re gonna get beat (because the WR’s know the route and the DB’s don’t).

Christ, getting healthy might just be enough. Williams was playing well, and that allows for a lot of depth. If we add a legit #1, that gives us Williams with Grimes/Houston/Owens/Jackson to play Nick/Dime situations.

Having Jerry back should help a lot. I also think Moore will blossom and we’ll see a Decoud/Moore safety tandem.

Best fix for this secondary is a D-line.

It would make a world of difference if the opposing QB was uncomfortable.

Agreed

Effective DBs and pass rushers are practically a tandem, you need both to excel.

by tom slick on Nov 30, 2009 11:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

We've got some talent, just not starter-quality

IMO we need 2 new starting CBs that actually have one-on-one coverage skills. Grimey, Chevis & Owens would give us good depth. Seems a stretch to do that in one draft, doesn’t it? Signing a veteran FA sure would grease the wheels there.

by tom slick on Nov 30, 2009 10:57 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Well, if we get a legit #1 DB...

then that slides our DBs down a receiver. Houston does good at times, but let’s not forget that he gets to cover the Larry Fitzgerald/Randy Moss/Steve Smiths of the league. They’re paid to burn the sin outta whoever gets in front of them!! Expecting a DB to stop circus receivers like the three I mentioned are a bit too much. I’m not defending Houston, he faceguards like every other oofus DB out there, but if he were to guard a #2 instead of a #1, he might suddenly look like he’s worth his salt.

Plz, Comrade, get us Asomugha.

very apt

i agree that houston is out of his league with what i have seen and heard. would be great to see an upgrade there and houston moved into a secondary role to see how he responds.

by Funballad on Dec 1, 2009 3:28 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, That's a Great Point About Houston

I’ve come around on him a bit more recently and I think he would be a fine #2 corner. I won’t go so far as to say that we need a shut-down corner (though god knows I’ll take one), but if we found a solid #1, someone who is capable of forcing a turnover, I think Houston would be much better.

But the BIGGEST issue is the lack of pressure our D-Line gets. That’ll improve with Jerry back and healthy.

by LetsGoFalcons on Dec 1, 2009 9:58 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

But that's the thing with Houston

He’s been put in an impossible situation. We all know he isn’t in the same league as some of the receivers he’s assigned to cover, but there’s nobody on the roster who could take his spot and fare any better, so he stays there. I can’t tell you how important it is for us to develop a true #1cornerback—not a shutdown, just someone capable of keeping up with those receivers—so Houston can slide over. I think he’d be an above average #2 corner.

wow, great point...

it’s not discussed much because our secondary has been such a lightning rod for criticism, but our D-line has been incredibly disappointing this year haven’t they? I mean has Abraham done anything since game 1?? Jerry gets hurt (which i fear he’ll be doing a lot of in the future, but i hope i’m wrong), and while JA appears to be a better DT than DE, he still hasn’t been anything close to an impact player. Biermann and Babineaux have had their moments, but both disappear for games at a time. I don’t even remember seeing Chauncey Davis in a big play this year. and has Sidbury played?

and it’s frustrating because they looked SO good in that first game. ever since then they’ve been either average or extremely below average. i thought they were going to be a high point of our team. of course i also thought our offense would be amazing, so that shows what i know.

by cheshire falcon on Nov 30, 2009 10:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I would leave Babineaux out of it

He’s done remarkably well for an interior lineman and can’t put that entire line on his back.

by Dave the Falconer on Nov 30, 2009 11:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes.

Usually DTs are not the ones that can take over a game. That’s usually left to the DEs. The DTs don’t get enough credit for stifling the run like they do. To my knowledge, Babs and everyone’s favorite scapegoat, JA98, have done a good job at stopping the run this year, along with T. Johnson and V. Walker.

But you are right. Chauncey Davis has disappeared. He did very well in limited time last year, and I have not heard his name ONE TIME. In fact, I forgot he was even on the team until you said his name!! Honestly, I think they’re bringing Sidbury along just like they did Beerman. He’s from a small school (Richmond) as Beerman was (Montana) and is a bit raw and undersized. From what I can tell he’s receiving limited playing time at most and maybe some special teams. That said, he’s got such a large upside, people are saying he could be the steal of the draft if he works out. Also, we have somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 defensive linemen. Names can often get lost in the shuffle.

"Ryan, under center. Single receiver set, time on his side. Ryan, gonna throw. First professional pass.....CAUGHT!! Jenkins! 30! 25! 20! 15! 10! 5! He lives in Atlanta!!!"

by Zippo729 on Dec 1, 2009 3:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow, you're right about Chauncey

I haven’t paid too much attention to him, because when he shows up in the “Digging Deeper” numbers that I’ve been doing, he almost always has a 100% Stop Rate. But he only has 8 solo tackles right now (he was 26+ the last three years) and zero sacks. I know he’s lost a little bit of playing time (probably to get Biermann on the field more), but if the Pro Football Focus numbers are right, he’s still getting about 43% of the defensive snaps (through week 11 – he was around 55% last year).

From everything I’ve seen, Thomas Johnson hasn’t really been that good this year (didn’t he miss a couple games with injury, or play hurt a few games though?). Another guy that I had decent hopes for before the season, but has been a total disappointment is Trey Lewis. Pro Football Focus says he has been our biggest liability versus the run. I don’t think he’s even gotten any playing time since the Redskins game.

FYI, here’s the playing time for the DL (this is from Pro Football Focus’ numbers, and doesn’t take into account the fact that Trey Lewis didn’t hit the active roster till the Patriots game, and Vance Walker didn’t play until Week 8, etc – that would be too time comsuming to filter out. It’s just their number of snaps divided by total defenive snaps):

Jonathan Babineaux 83%
Jamaal Anderson 67%
John Abraham 65%
Kroy Biermann 48%
Chauncey Davis 43%
Thomas Johnson 40%
Trey Lewis 25%
Vance Walker 15%
Lawrence Sidbury 7%

How was Vance Walker been statistically?

From watching the games, he seems to be in on a lot of plays and seems to be very disruptive at the point of attack. Maybe my eyes deceive me, but it’s starting to look like he was one heck of a 7th round pick.

by LetsGoFalcons on Dec 1, 2009 10:01 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah

My eyes are telling me the same thing. I’m pretty sure his Stop Rate numbers in his first few games were pretty good. PFF says he’s been a little below average against the run, and a little above average generating a pass rush (with one “bad” game against Carolina in his first 4 – TB game’s not up yet). Even with minimal improvement in the next couple years, I’d say yes – looks like that was a heck of a pick.

Building a team

I Agree with building a team through the draft which the Falcons have certainly done. I don’t agree with their inactivity in free agency though. I think in the past 3 drafts the Falcons have drafted around 8 players in the secondary, and signed at least 6 players through free agency. My problem is, that none of them are very good. Dominque Foxworth should have been resigned considering the issues the Falcons have in the secondary. I don’t understand why you would sign Tye Hill, if he’s not a proven corner? The Redbirds have plenty of personnel in the secondary for nickel situations, but what about starters? I see no point in signing a player if they aren’t any better than what they already have. Go out and sign a marquee guy!

Tye Hill

is still a bit raw. He has 1st round talent but in his 4 or 5 years he hasn’t stayed healthy for half a season, or so it would seem. He also played for the Rams, who have never been able to stop anyone, ever, since the GSoT.

we picked up Brian Williams

in free agency. he was playing well but injured himself making a hell of a play. the secondary wasn’t great but they have certainly declined since he was injured. at the time he was injured and since, there haven’t been a whole lot of top tier corners floating around. so, i think we’re just going to have to deal with it until next season.

C'mon guys

get off the Redman bashing wagon at some point. How many games has Ryan had were his numbers were as good as Redman’s were on Sunday? Can he do it again? Guess we’ll see on Sunday but right no he’s our QB!! Let go Redman!!

Redman has thrown 12 less int’s than Ryan.

Gonzalez had a season high 9 catches with Red Bird at the helm.

Chris came up clutch with the TD to Roddy with 23 seconds left on 4th down while trailing.

I’m starting Redman on some of my fantasy football teams.
