Ask Hogs Haven: Your Redskins Questions Answered...
Hey Falcons fans...this is Kevin, the Editor over at HogsHaven.com. Tough loss Monday Night, but at least you have a good team and a personnel staff that is not in shambles. Having said, post any questions and I'll answer them for you.
A couple notes:
- DeAngelo Hall will be returning some punts on Sunday, which he hasn't done since 2007.
- John Abraham will probably have 3+ sacks on Sunday. Losing Chris Samuels has been devastating for the Skins, especially since he's the only lineman the Skins have drafted in the first round since 2000. His replacement, Stephon Heyer, an undrafted lineman from University of Maryland, has been getting worked over.
- Skins defense is good, but it gets worn down in the second half since the Skins Offense cannot stay on the field.
- Jim Zorn has lost some of the locker room, so coming off a BYE shouldn't help us too much
- Losing Chris Cooley to a broken foot blows, but Fred Davis should not be ignored. He spent his BYE week in D.C. working on route running and blocking.

Are the Redskins really as bad as they look?

Absolutely...
3 of our offensive linemen were undrafted free agents and 2 of them were out of the NFL last year. Vinny Cerrato has REFUSED to draft an OLineman and it has killed us every year. MADDENING. In all 9 rounds the Skins have drafted ZERO o-lineman the past 2 years.

ps - and this was when we knew the Oline already sucked!!!!
We lost Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas to season-ending injuries last year, and their backups got CRUSHED by opposing teams. Run average plummeted and Campbell got killed….why draft an Olineman???

One sidenote...
The defense is playing very good….Haynesworth has been a force allowing the ends to get to the QB and LBs to hit gaps untouched. Problem is, they get worn out b/c the offense can’t stay on the field…the skins D is ranked one of the highest in regards to time on the field.

The Redskins' Defense is not so bad.
That’s what my Power Ranking says to me: as you can see there (click here – it’s one of the last comments), the ‘Skins’ Defensive Rating is 82.35%; a quite good rating. The ‘Skins’ problem is their offense: it’s rated 11.92%, one of the worst of the league, and we also can see that they aren’t working well. The Lions won their match w/ Redskins. Also did Panthers and Chiefs.

I have not seen this level of futility
since I began watching the ‘Skins in the early ’70’s. They play a childishly simple offense and while the D is good overall, sooner or later they give up big plays after bending and bending all day long.
Special teams have been OK, no real big plays on either side of the ball. Of course there have been issues with our punt returning. We seemed to fair catch or run to the sidelines rather than up field. The game turning fumble last week was the last straw.

It's the offense.....
our D is fine and they would be ranked higher if our offense could sustain more drives and not turn the ball over. Special teams isn’t a standout group, but with the exception of Randle El attempting to catch a punt with his facemask, they have not been a liability either. Our problems lay cleanly with the offenses inabilty to consistently convert on third down as well as get TDs in the redzone!

I know Snyder and Co. would love a shiny new quarterback
But where does the team have to start to solve its woes? I can’t make myself believe that booting Campbell to the curb would really solve all that much.

Skins no matter what will have a rough next 2 years.
The Skins won all 3 of their Super Bowls with mediocre QBs and the best offensive line arguable of all time, named “The Hogs”….it’s what we Redskins fans know and want again. We’re doing the opposite. Snyder wants a superstar QB and could care less about the Oline. Drafting O-linemen in the first 2 rounds does not sell jerseys.
by KevinE on Nov 4, 2009 7:26 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Remember
Not only did we win with 3 QB’s, we also won with 3 RB’s too. It just shows that O-line can make it happen. Look at Farve, that guy hasn’t had to wash his jersey since it was a Jets jersey. That line is amazing and he has time to make average WR’s look great.

Correct. Our problems run so much deeper than JC
JC is just the lightning rod b/c he’s the QB. He has many faults of his own, but I can count on one hand the number of QBs in the NFL who could play decently when Stephen Heyer and Mike Williams were blocking for them at offensive tackle.
We’d all love to have Drew Brees as our QB but…..

what is the likely hood that the Skins pull the upset in the GA Dome?

So has the playcalling improved under Lewis?
That didn’t make sense to me on alot of levels
by zooker on Nov 4, 2009 9:45 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
It's only been one game, it's hard to say.
But it’s hard to believe this system could possibly produce decent results better than what Zorn did:
So, just to review, the Redskins had to take time to devise a code system in order that someone unfamiliar with the personnel and terminology could call part of the offense from the coaches’ box with the help of another coach. Smith, the offensive coordinator, handled the running game and Zorn, who was stripped of play-calling duties, revealed he called at least a portion of the plays in the two-minute drill.
–WaPo
The only logical explanation for this soap opera is that Snyder was trying to embarrass and belittle Zorn so much that he would quit, and thus Snyder wouldn’t have to pay him the rest of his salary.
Otherwise, from a football sense there’s no logic to what Snyderrato pulled.

Even with wonderful play calling
it is still a watered down version of the West Coast Offense with poor blocking and bad QB decisions, so we can’t expect too much.

Thats sorta what I was thinking
If were Zorn, Id be very tempted to tell him go s#$@ himself unless it meant forfeiting a fat contract. That type of management will seriously affect their ability to hire the right guy next time, though. Thats just dumb
by zooker on Nov 4, 2009 1:19 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, but only in the sense that....
the other team doesn’t know what we are calling like they seemed to wiith Zorn. That said, it wasn’t a tremendous improvement other than the fact that we actually ended 2 drives with TDs! We will have to see how it holds up in the weeks to come to truly answer that question!

Playcalling of Lewis
Hard to say if the playcalling has improved under Lewis since he was only here for a week. We’ll find out more this Sunday as he’s had two weeks to prepare.

How do the fans like DeAngelo Hall?
MeAngelo was quite a polarizing figure when he played for the Falcons. I’ve read stories indicating that he’s trying to change his “diva” behavior. What’s his reputation like with the ’Skins faithful? Have his tackling skills improved? Will we see him returning punts Sunday?
by tom slick on Nov 4, 2009 3:50 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
You will see him returning punts but it is still by committee….I would expect to see ARE as well as Moss in the mix as well. As far as the diva behavior, some may disagree, but I haven’t seen it. He has been pretty consistent in wanting to repair his career and image, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t talk. He still likes the spotlight, but seems to be a little smarter in what he is saying. Tackling still sucks but that’s not why we brought him here in my opinion. I think we were looking for somone to help cover the 1s and 2s, and create turnovers. Our defenses have been good the last few years, but we have always lacked in 2 major categories, sacks and turnovers. I think they were trying to change that by giving Hall and Haynesworth their big contracts!

DeAngelo
I’ve been quite impressed with DeAngelo’s behavior, particularly given all of the adversity the team is facing. He’s the only member of the team that I have personally heard come out and take responsibility on his shoulders for the way they are playing. Many of the players, Mike Sellers and others, actually are under the delusion that the negativity from the fans and the media is what is holding this team back. DeAngelo is realistic enough to know that it starts and ends with the players. On the other hand DeAngelo is a great cover guy but the worst tackler I’ve ever seen. Carolina’s QB Jake Delhome juked him in the open field and then proceeeded to carry him on his back for 10 yards for a first down, ultimately sealing our loss to the Panthers.
by Kurtstack on Nov 5, 2009 10:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I always liked D Lo ...
but his game-long spat with Steve Smith in the second Carolina game two years back convinced me that when it really comes down to it, he’s not a team player.
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

We Falcons fans definitely know what it's like
to have a hopelessly bad team that’s disrespected throughout the league. Hang in there, the revenge of finally having a good team is sweet indeed.

If you were Mike Smith .............
what would your gameplan include that attacks and exposes the faults of the Redskins? Heavy dose of Turner? Drop back and throw bombs to White? Slants, dump passes, and such to Gonzalez /Turner?
What about on D……Send the house? Stack the box? Load up with DB’s?
by BabyGoatEater on Nov 5, 2009 8:35 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Well.....
On offense…to expose the Skins D…….I would say anything that gets you into single deep coverage…..like double moves by the WRs…..other than that….the big play…..D is pretty stout. Turner won’t have a big day…..Gonzalez will have a couple catches but won’t be a deciding factor, unless he is on Orakpo all day(great pass rusher….still learning coverage). It’s going to be on Jenkins and White to beat Hall and Rogers! I wouldn’t play any Falcons on my fantasy team, but I also wouldn’t play the Skins D unless that’s all I had!
To expose the Skins O……stay on assignment…..cover the short stuff….stay in position! Obviously you have heard about our offense…..really…to stop it….just do your job! Don’t have to be great at it…just consistent. Our play calling has yet to consistently take advantage of mis-matches or even defensive alignments! I would expect a few play-action deep balls here and there…..but more than likely will be a steady dose of the run (60%/40%) early, and then all passing to catch up!
I know I sound a bit pessimistic on this one, which isn’t my style……but I do believe this is anyone’s game! The Falcons have been on the right track for the last 2 years…..the Skins are a couple big plays on offense and defense away from 5-2!

I understand they are your guys....
but there aren’t many great fantasy days put up against the Skins! They get beat by a couple big plays and a few turnovers. Not consistent offense…..at least not up until this point! The defense has only given up 9 TDs total (6 passing and 3 rushing)! We haven’t allowed over 250 yards passing this year There have only been 2 rushers to gain over 100 yards; it wasn’t by much and neither got any TDs! Your best bet will be Gonzalez but it’s only if it’s Orakpo on him! You would be better served playing Atlanta’s Def because you are almost guaranteed 2 turnovers. We have 17 turnovers in 7 games! I am a fan of the Skins but love fantasy football…..I answered the question as a fantasy football guy…..not a Skins fan! Good luck!

I hear you
but I still disagree. If we were playing on the road I might believe it, but we are very good on our own field. I dont see how Turner or Gonzo have a bad game here. I see at least 1 TD a piece for both.

This Falcons fan
has found our visitors’ opinions here to be intelligent & realistic, by and large. I wouldn’t have much respect for a Redskins fan that was optimistic and elated over the state of the franchise (not being snarky, we’ve certainly been there too).
What’s up with all the venom John Riggins was spewing at Dan Snyder on “Inside The NFL” this week? Riggins has made a fool of himself before, but I was surprised to see him talking sh!t like he was Artie Lange on “Joe Buck Live”. What’s the fan consensus on Snyder?

Judging from SS post above.....
not sure that I am aloud to talk about the Skins to you guys anymore, but since I don’t give a sh*t….here we go! haha!
My opinion is simply that he is too big of a fan and he has too much money. It has gone to his head and made him think that since he is successful in business….he can build a football team. This has always been an issue with him, but if he ever was going to get the idea that he needs legitimate help from a real GM, it is now….with all of the outcry from the fans. We will see. I personally don’t think he has a “dark heart”! Being in his position, and with the amount of money he makes and has tied up into this team, he has to make hard decisions. Even with a generally average team, he has managed to keep it one of the highest grossing. There is something to be said about that, but he needs to realize it is the fan base that keeps it there.
As far as the general consensus among fans, it seems somewhat split but the majority would be that he isn’t a bad person, just a bad owner!
I like the idea of having an owner that isn’t afraid to open the purse to build a team, we just need someone to help him out with where, when, and how that money should go out instead of leaving it to him!
