Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants Open Thread

Atlanta Falcons at New York Giants, Nov 22, 2009 1:00 PM EST

For a variety of reasons, this is a must-win. So the Falcons must win. Simple as that.

So let's go out and get that win, right? It won't be easy without Michael Turner and against a reeling Giants team that will be out for blood, but when are good things ever easy? Maybe it's the fact that I'm exhausted, but I believe we can take this one away. Just a belief, I guess.

Make sure to comment early and often as we follow along with the action.

What? Atlanta Falcons @ New York Giants, 1 p.m. EST

Where? "Giants Stadium," East Rutherford, New Jersey

Weather? It's always sunny in East Rutherford.

Fun Fact? In his short career, Jason Snelling is averaging 4.4 yards per carry. Does give you a little boost of confidence with Turner out, right? I hope so.

Injuries? Sam Baker is probable and will likely take over for Will Svitek, a fine lineman who nevertheless isn't quite in Baker's league in pass protection. Brian Finneran is out and Michael Turner almost certainly is, while Erik Coleman, Jerious Norwood and Roddy White as questionable. White and Coleman will play, but I'm not sure about Norwood.

The Giants will be missing LB Antonio Pierce, but they're otherwise pretty healthy.

Odds? New York over Atlanta 7.0, O/U 46.0

Foe? Go check out the rational, thoughtful folks at Big Blue View. They'll tell you all about their recent woes, yessiree.

GO FALCONS! Let's cut these Giants down to size!

Maybe it's the many, many years of Falcohoholism, ...

…but I feel an odd, sinking hopelessness when I survey this game. The Giants need someone against whom they can stop the bleeding and become healthy. Over the years I’ve seen the beloved Birds play that role over and over (and over and over). This Giants team has the potential to play extraordinarily well in all phases of the game, and we’ve been solid all year only only on special teams.

Maybe I’m wrong, and if so, I’ll be the first to admit it and be the happiest guy at the celebration.

GO BIRDS!!!

How many more days, Lord, must I walk through the wilderness?

I want the win as badly as anyone...

… but I disagree with calling it a “must win.”

We can drop this game, and still make up ground against the Bucs, Bucs, Bills, Jets and Eagles – all games we’ll likely be favored. That will get us to 10 wins, probably enough to take the wild card (considering we’ll have tiebreakers against the Bears, Eagles and 49ers.)

Of course, a win today GREATLY helps things, as going 5-1 down the stretch is a tough thing to do no matter the opponent. But an L today doesn’t put an end to this season.

There's at least two quality young kickers out there right now

That can be had for no draft picks. There will be growing pains involved, but I’d rather do that and get a polished final product than stick with a declining kicker or spend a high round pick on one.

I wish we would get Walsh from UGA, he's a Sr. and Great FG kicker, hey start using him, just let him wear Elam's

uni. The guy is awesome, he hit one yesterday, that would have been good at 65 yds out.
Elam is stinking this year….

but if we hadn't made it

everyone would be rippin the coaches askin for someone to get fired and this loss would feel way worse

With the momentum

I could live with our O going for the win than having a chance for our pass defense to keep getting torched. Though Bradshaw got the best spot ever for being on his head rather than being “down”.

by MustangFalcFan on Nov 22, 2009 4:35 PM EST up reply actions

yea

but if we had gone for it and not made it alot of us would be pissed off as hell and besides the D stepped up once or twice we gave our D to much credit

by Erihury on Nov 22, 2009 4:37 PM EST up reply actions

That was rough.

I’m sorry, but we should’ve won that.

Buh-bye, ya’ll.

I will smuggle in my own coin for the next OT flip to make sure this does not happen again

by WarWolf on Nov 22, 2009 4:23 PM EST reply actions

Why don’t we just blame Peria, Brian, Micheal, Jerious, and Harry for getting hurt ?

by WarWolf on Nov 22, 2009 4:25 PM EST reply actions

Elam

Didn’t help in NO and now 2 misses? Can we sign Coutu?

by MustangFalcFan on Nov 22, 2009 4:26 PM EST reply actions

Elam has to go. He has missed too many FGs this year. And the other team missing one doesn"t negate ours.

by Whyte Bler 000 on Nov 22, 2009 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Sure it does.

Because if they had lost, they would say the same thing. This way, it’s even. No excuses should be made about that.

If they had made 2/2 FGs to our 1/2, then yes you could argue, but not necessarily prove, that Elam cost us the game.

by Zippo729 on Nov 22, 2009 4:29 PM EST up reply actions

Ah sorry, I was in a hurry and it didn’t come out right. If that had been Elam’s only miss this year, or maybe 2nd, I would say NYs missed FG negated ours. But because Elam has been so bad this year, I don’t want to look at it that way. He needs to make every FG from here on out to even be considered for a spot next year.

Kickers are going to miss, but they should not be consistently missing kicks.

Giants fan here

The Falcons played a good game, had the coin toss gone the other way I have no doubt you guys would have won. The Giants defense choked late & I hate the NFL’s OT even when it benefits the Giants, so it’s hard for me to feel too good about the win – and I know how you guys must feel with the loss. Falcons are a good team though, and I will be rooting for you guys the rest of the way to hopefully get one of the two wild card spots (with the Giants getting the other one, of course). Good luck

"[The Giants] beat us down. We were beat by a grown-man team, a team we want to be like one day. They came in here and took it to us. Out-manned us, out-gunned us. ... It wasn't even close." - Raheem Morris, 9/27/09

thanks for stopping by

congrats on the win. we’re just licking our wounds over here..

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. - Bill Shankly

damn.

ryan finally learned how to hit jenkins. we showed some passing offense 4 a change. defense looked terrible!! the ? now is is our season over? is there any hope 4 the wild card???

by DEMBIRDZCUZ! on Nov 22, 2009 4:49 PM EST reply actions

All is not lost.

I can pretty much say (based on the way the Jets are looking against NE right now) we’ll beat them, TB both times, and BUF for 9 wins. Other than that, I think we can beat Philly at home. We need a huge fan turnout for that game, though. I think what the Birds need more than anything is some fan support.

IT is nice to see that the Giants' receivers did not have to strain themselves

I do not remember seeing more receivers more wide open than yesterday. Eli has a record day, Ok.

(yes, I have watched the falseones for many years)
