Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers Open Thread

Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers, Nov 15, 2009 1:00 PM EST

It's a rivalry game. If you need a pep talk to get excited about this one, you're either catatonic or a closet AFC fan.

As usual, this is your big bad open thread for the entire game. Chime in early and often as we cheer our Falcons through what promises to be a reasonably tough rematch with the Carolina Panthers. If we can pull out a win, we'll be sitting on 6-3 and one step closer to both a wildcard spot and the magic 9 wins.

In game-related news, running back Aaron Stecker has been released, wide receiver Troy Bergeron has been promoted to the active roster and Michael Jenkins is questionable with an illness. With Brian Finneran and Roddy White struggling with injuries, you could see quite a bit of Marty Booker and Eric Weems in this one.

Here we go!

What? Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers, 1 p.m. ET

Where? Bank of America Stadium, Charlotte, North Carolina

Weather? Current predictions have it as partly cloudy and somewhere between 60 and 70 degrees. Should be nice game weather.

Fun Fact? The last time these two teams met, the Falcons won! Yay!

Injuries? Whole lot of injuries, even in addition to the ones I've mentioned. Suffice to say the Falcons could be without Jason Snelling, Jerious Norwood and Thomas Johnson, while the Panthers will have to deal with life without linebacker Thomas Davis and possibly stud running back DeAngelo Williams.

Odds? Atlanta over Carolina 1.5, O/U 43.5

Foe? You all remember Cat Scratch Reader, right? Be sure to pop over and say hello as you follow along with the game. Jaxon & Co. are good friends of this here site.

GO FALCONS! Let's de-claw these Panthers!

I do not get releasing Stecker – he played clutch in recent weeks.

Does this mean Snelling will play ?

The team has 3 TEs and TG hasn’t been hurt in 13 years. What is the point of the 3rd TE ?

Jenkins illness and White’s knee will make our pass attack questionable. I hope they finally throw to Weems.

Stew and Williams are hurting – this will help a ton.

I hope to see a heavy dose of Gonzo and Burner and a 31 to 24 Falcons victory today !

it has been musical chairs lately

I’m not sure about Snelling but White and Jenkins are active. They are definitely not 100% though. I agree about getting Weems more involved. It can only help as the season continues.

DeAngelo Williams is also active.

The Falcons use a lot of 2 TE formations. I guess they have the 3rd TE just in case. Also, TG may only be around for another year so, there needs to be an heir apparent in training.

If JN32 or MS44 are playing, theyr'e better coices.

I’d love to hear if they’re scratched. You’re right Stecker was helpful, but it seems like he came up just short each time. Coulda been the situations.

Okay, I’m stoked! Let’s kick some CarPants!

Hope Peppers takes some time off today, as he’s wont to do occasionally.

The Funny Thing Is That We Know He Can Throw Well Under Pressure

He had several good games where he was facing some pressure, getting the ball out quick, making accurate throws.

I don’t know what it is, maybe it’s mechanics. He seems to be throwing some off his back foot and it makes his throws sail.

No Doubt About It

QB play has been night and day. Delhomme has been playing very well. Ryan’s just not putting the ball where it needs to be. Plus we’ve suddenly developed a case of the dropsies (Zinger, Jenkins, etc.)

More unsightly stats

Carolina’s outgained the Falcons 222-165. Take away those 2 long Turner runs, and we’ve gotten our butts paddled pretty well thus far.

by tom slick on Nov 15, 2009 2:36 PM EST reply actions

It's unfortunate because Turner had been playing so well

9 carries for 111 yards. But the lack of a passing attack has caused us to stall out bad.

But the regression deflates my thinking that he’d be an elite qb in the league one day. Still could happen, but I doubt it. Even if we squeaked out this win, I would still hold on to that statement. No pocket presence, awful decision making, and poor execution. Not a lot to latch on to as far as hope goes.

I still believe.

After the Chicago game last year, I still believe Ryan will be good. Regardless of the reasons, something is wrong.

Also, we’re playing much more difficult teams last year. Turner’s firmly established himself as someone who can run against good defenses but now Ryan’s gotta grow up a little more.

I love Ryan, I really do...

but I think something is in his head. He just doesn’t seemed relaxed. It reminds me of Roddy at the beginning of the year. When he said “I was trying to live up to all the pressure.”

we have had

chances to win most games we can’t let losses like this bring us down we still have shot at play offs i blame Elam totally it was a chip shot

It's tough when a kicker can't make it happen any more

Whether age, lingering injury or something else is causing it, I’m not sure how much long we can continue to employ a guy who only handle kickoffs and extra points and is providing critical misses.

I misspoke

I meant to say “doesn’t handle kickoffs.” My bad.

There are options out there

I’m as stand-pat a guy as you’ll ever find, but even I think we have to at least consider replacing Elam.

I think it was more of a miscue between the snapper and the holder but I feel what you’re saying.

If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me I should shutup, I'd probably have 5 or 6 bucks.

the snapper and holder should practice this and have it down pat, Ugh

Not I

Heard it was a bit one-sided.

The real question

is the extent of Turner’s injury. My man had 111 yds through 1.5 quarters and if he is hurt is LJ an option?

If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me I should shutup, I'd probably have 5 or 6 bucks.

I'll be honest

I’d rather suit up myself than employ LJ.

Just a thought

But if Turner is hurt long-term (please,God no), we can’t rely on just Jason Snelling. Who else is out there?

If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me I should shutup, I'd probably have 5 or 6 bucks.

Jerious "Baby's Daddy" Norwood.

Just poking fun at it. I hope he’s healthy. We’ve given him more than enough time to recover from whatever’s wrong with him. We have Antoine Winfield (I think that’s his name) the FSU kid.

Who knows. This season could go to heck real quick if Turner’s hurt bad. Ryan’s trying too hard and the offense is stagnant. Remember what I said a couple weeks ago about too many weapons? I think that still might be an issue. We did fine without a pass catching TE last year, not that I wouldn’t take TG any day of the week, but it could be something, ya know? I hear a lot about Ryan forcing throws to his TE, which makes no sense since we played without a pass catching TE last year.

Some kicker options

Matt Bryant, TB’s old kicker, I think he can still kick worth a toot.

Also, the Saints old kicker, Carney. I see people everywhere wondering why he still isn’t with NO. Maybe we can get one of those two.
