A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Curtis Lofton

Curtis Lofton is the man.

That may seem to be an odd way to start off a discussion-based post, but it's most certainly true. This is a dude who leads the league in tackles—not a marquee or even particularly critical stat, but it's worth recognizing—and has been in on seemingly every play this season. With a pair of jarring hits which forced fumbles and a pair of pass deflections, he's quietly making things happen beyond the stops, and it would seem to me that he's got a good chance to get his due from the completely asinine wonderful arena of the Pro Bowl.

I know I've asked this before, but what do you think young Lofton's ceiling is after having seen him play this season? Do you think he'll have a big game against the Panthers, where his run-stopping skills will be needed against a terrific Teal Cats ground game? Will we ever come up with a really awesome nickname for him?

Crash in like a killer whale at a seal bar mitzvah, if you would.

They call him "SLEDGE"

Lofton has greatness written all over him! He has that special blend of speed and power with a never quit attitude that has destined him for stardom. Falcon’s fans have see many great linebackers. Lofton may be the best of the bunch before it’s over!

Yeah

Tuggle was the Hammer. Lofotn being sledge is a nice fit as well.

His ceiling?

It’s gotta be multiple Pro Bowls, and a national reputation as one of the best LB’s in the game. If he’s leading the league in Tackles, and we’re talking Pro Bowl halfway into his second season, the sky is the limit, right? He sure seems poised to join the long list of great MLB’s in Falcons history.

Yes – Curtis Lofton is the man.

Leading in tackles is great

But we all know it’s only part of the picture. I enjoy your weekly breakdowns, are there any similar cumulative season metrics that you recommend?

by tom slick on Nov 11, 2009 1:43 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Actually...

When I did my first set of cumulative numbers for the “Digging Deeper” thing, he had good, but not great numbers early (first 3 games). By the way, I’m going to give another update soon – I promise. Just from watching and seeing some of the recent weekly numbers, I feel like he’s stepped it up a notch. Some of the plays that impress me the most are ones that have little impact on the numbers (a huge jarring hit on a RB – just goes down as any other tackle), or ones that actually make his numbers look worse (covering a TE 20 yards downfield; chasing somebody down sideline-to-sideline for a big gain after somebody else missed a tackle).

I’m going to continue doing the weekly breakdowns – because it’s fun, and because I want to check for myself what’s happening out there – but I found a resource that is potentially much much MUCH better than anything I’ve been doing to grade individual performances. It’s called Pro Football Focus (I can’t believe I’ve never seen them before). They grade every player on every play – and when I found the site yesterday, they had already posted info from the Redskins game. They rate Curtis Lofton as the #6 MLB/ILB in the NFL.

I’ll have to check it out a little closer to see how they’re grading the guys, but at least initially, they seem to jibe with my numbers:

A) They rank the CB’s performance the same way I had them early: #1 Brent Grimes, #2 Chris Houston, #3 Brian Williams
B) They have Justin Blaylock as the weak link on the O-Line
C) They show Mike Peterson starting off strong, then really dropping off the last few weeks

One area I definitely have a problem with right now is rating QB’s. Somehow, they have Aaron Rogers ranked #1 so far, with Peyton Manning and Drew Brees right behind. All I can figure is that they’re crediting his sacks all as the fault of the O-Line. He’s a great passer, but he holds on to the ball too long, and allows some of those sacks.

Anyway, I’m definitely going to be using this site in some of my analysis going forward – it looks like a tremendous resource. Heck, they even have a Player Participation Log to show how many snaps everybody was playing (and where they were lined up). For instance, I knew they were using Tye Hill more, but did you know that Grimes only got 6 snaps against the Redskins? Or that Ovie was in for 23% of the Offensive snaps, with 11 run plays and 3 pass plays (2 running routes; 1 as a blocker)? Holy crap, my head is going to explode!

His upside potential is

HUGE!! I’m just happy to see that our leading tackler this season is not a DB

Nickname:

Dump Truck … fits him perfectly

Did y’all see that he set the Falcons squat record (785 lbs)? Former record holder: Burner (750 lbs).

That means he could squat this dude:

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Haha, nah

More like nawing off a limb to get out of the trap.

Corey Zickefoose: I think they should still be able to play football, regardless. Tennessee is my place. You know, it's my football team.

Reporter: Even after they put a gun in your face, you say let them play football?

Corey Zickefoose: Yeah. It's Tennessee. That's the way it is sometimes.

Welcome to the SEC!

I thought about that

But he hasn’t hurt us often

If I had a nickel for everytime someone told me I should shutup, I'd probably have 5 or 6 bucks.

Sledge is to Lofton as Hammer was to Tuggle

Being the hitter that Tuggle was, can Lofton be anything but THE SLEDGE! if Lofton indeed does become the greatest LB in Falcons history. He definitely has a shot!

Curtis Lofton

Is an awesome name in and of itself. Not sure he even needs a nickname. In fact, I’ll bet future linebackers who are good will be nicknamed “Curtis Lofton.”

at one point

going into the season, I stated, the defense’s nickname is Curtis Lofton.
