Q&A with a Panthers Blogger

Jaxon here again Falcons faithful from Cat Scratch Reader. If you have any questions I will stop by periodically this week to answer them. Be sure to hit the Rec button so this post remains on top for the week. You can read Dave's answers to questions from my readers here.

I'll try to get some of the obvious ones out of the way:

  • At 3-5 we haven't given up hope just yet but we are on life-support
  • The coaching staff has shown this is Jake's team to lead and no matter the effect he is not going to get benched. Yes he's improved his play the past couple weeks but he still seems to present limitations to the passing game which limits the possibility of a comeback when down late in a game
  • DE Julius Peppers had been playing better but disappeared again last week against the Saints. Who knows if he will show up this week...
  • The defense is playing better but the secondary gambled too much against the Saints and got burned
  • I still expect a big crowd this week, after all it is the Falcons! Beating you guys will make some of the hurt go away!

I'm ready for your questions...

I respect you coaching staff sticking with the guy, but if I were you, I might not be as forgiving.

What is the fan base’s opinion re: old Jaykee Poo?

Well...ran a poll several weeks ago and it was 75% positive...

Probably should run another one now. I think most still think he is the best opportunity to win but most also agree we need to add more options in the offseason.

Which would you prefer out of the following?

1) A high-round rookie quarterback who could start soon
2) A low-round rookie quarterback as a project
3) A veteran free agent like Brian St. Pierre
4) Stand pat

Brian St. Pierre?

Ya know, the Redskins can’t wait to get rid of Campbell, and I’m convinced he could be a decent QB somewhere else…

They had a nice lead on the Saints going into the half

And the whole fame the Saints offense only scored 2 TDs. I’d say that’s much better than the Falcons effort. And the week before they picked off Kurt Warner 5 times and ran for 270 yards.

But as badly as I’d like to talk trash… I don’t think any of us Panther fans have it in us anymore.

ATL was does by 2 touchdowns at the half and came back and punched NO in the mouth, and made it a game.

Teams have built leads and lost them to NO, no teams has been down at their house and fight their way back in it like ATL…

What if the Saints are 15-0 going into Charlotte and the Panthers are out of the playoffs?

Saints would certainly have the home field wrapped up. The Panthers could salvage their season by ruining the Saints perfect season. Do the Saints sit Brees? Sit any other stars? The Panthers would certainly be fired up and so would the home crowd.

So, Panther Dude

Would you say that your defense has a better or worse chance of stopping turner than the Skins and Saints?

Could Matt Ryan avoid INTs against you, or is your secondary as solid as it sometimes appears?

Will Matt Ryan get pounded into the earth? Peppers looks downright scary at times.

How are your RBs ball control? We often cause fumbles at nice times. Same with your O-Line, are they fairly solid?

by Jebidillah on Nov 10, 2009 4:50 PM EST reply actions

other three answers

2 – Hard to say on this one, against the Cards the secondary looked great, not so much against the Saints. Don’t know which one will show up
3 – Baker did a good job on Pep last game, I see no reason to think this game will be any different
4 – After not having a single fumble last season Williams has 3 or 4 already and Stewart had a painful one against the Saints. You just might get 1 or 2 this week.

that seems to be the Falcon's specialty

what normally happens though, is we’ll come out prepared for the run, wind up stopping the run (as in – holding Carolina’s super running attack to less than 100 yards) and then wind up getting chewed up through the air on 3rd and longs. But, by George! We’ll stop the run…

All really good WRs have some sort of primmadonna issue

The difference is that Smitty’s antics have never resulted in him not giving 100% on the field, and have never hurt the team’s outcome. Plus the guy apologizes for his anger issues and tries to correct it… You’ll never get that from a TO or Braylon Edwards. Trust me! We had to deal with Me-Shawn for a year.

umm

Assault and Battery is not a primma donna issue, it’s a felony in most cases. Apologizing for it doesn’t make it ok, his effort on the field doesn’t make it ok, and no other WR has gone to such extremes in any of their antics. By your logic, we should let every criminal go free if they simply apologized. That’s about as bad as saying that what Vick did was ok because it didn’t affect his on-the-field performance.

Steve Smith has not just had one outburst, but multiples, so this isn’t a random outlier. Stop trying to justify his criminal behavior, you’re only making yourself look silly.

I wasn't kidding

Remember when Weinke kicked the crap out of the Falcons like 4 years back (when Mr. I Hate Dogs was still around). He wasn’t all that bad.

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?

Respect!

Hate to say it but I’ve always respected Carolina! The coaching staff under Coach Fox has always been extrodinary. You have always represented the NFC South with honor. Atlanta needs it’s rivalry with Carolina to help make us a better football team.

I think that goes both ways

Mike smith seems to be a good coach, good young QB and RB. Falcons fans have a lot of be hopeful about for many years.

Any chance D. Williams sits this one out?

High ankle sprain in practice? Look, the Panthers season is over already, you might as well bench him for this one to give him some rest for next year.

It would be nice to see what the more powerful Jonathan Stewart could do with the majority of the carries ;)

How's he doing by the way?

I thought I read a report stating that he had an injured knee or something? He still going to play? Really, give the guy a break, let him rest that knee. I would really hate to see him lose it for the year with Lofton roaming back there.

How has the Panthers' running game looked lately?

The potential mismatch of Carolina’s run offense (4.7 ypc, 5th place) and Atlanta’s run defense (4.5 ypc, 24th) concerns me.

In our week 2 meeting, youse guys ran the ball quite well, a whopping 5.8 ypc! I’d imagine that running, early and often, would be the CW on how to beat the Falcons Sunday.

DeAngelo is looking like he'll make the ProBowl that he should have gone to last year

The Panthers are actually 3rd in rushing yards per game. DeAngelo is 6th in total yards, even though he averaged only 55 ypg the first 4 games. He’s averaged 137 since. Also 2 weeks ago Fox only passed 14 times on what then was the league’s best rushing defense, and amassed over 250 yards! So you can bet you will get a heavy dose of it as well.

I forgot

That he didn’t go to the PB last year… that sucks. The Pro Bowl is just a bit of a farce at times.

Yeah, just a little bit

The absolute worst award in sports in the Gold Glove in baseball. Year after year, the worst fielding guys in the league by any reasonable metric get the award while I froth at the mouth with rage.

Except Greg Maddox

And if you disagree, don’t step foot in Atlanta, haha!

Corey Zickefoose: I think they should still be able to play football, regardless. Tennessee is my place. You know, it's my football team.

Reporter: Even after they put a gun in your face, you say let them play football?

Corey Zickefoose: Yeah. It's Tennessee. That's the way it is sometimes.

Welcome to the SEC!

No sir

I’m thinking of Derek Jeter specifically, as well as Michael Young recently. Two shortstops who can’t field a lick….

Winners and big hitters?

You must be good at defense, too! You’re right, GG is the worst…

Jumpin' Vishnu, what happened to the Gold Glove Award?

Grampa says it used to be THE most prestigious defensive award, WTF? I thought players used to vote for it, Wikipedia says managers & coaches vote now.

by tom slick on Nov 13, 2009 9:52 PM EST up reply actions

Part of the problem

Is that it’s all about name recognition, quality of hitting and how spectacular people make things look. For instance, Baltimore Orioles CF Adam Jones (not Pacman) won a Gold Glove this year because he had a handful of legitimately impressive catches, while the far superior Franklin Gutierrez made everything look easy and wasn’t half the hitter Jones was.

It’s too bad.

Baseball keeps moving in many troubling directions

My pet peeve is using the winner of the All-Star game to determine home field for the World Series. That’s about the stupidest thing I ever heard of.

If inner division rivals get it, why don't the shot callers???

The guy led the league in TDs, was 3rd in total yards despite splitting carries, led all starting RBs in ypc… and all that even though he was 9th in attempts! And he had 0 friggin fumbles. Yet he doesn’t make the Probowl.

He should go honorary this year just for having been screwed last year.
