A Very Falcoholic Discussion: Planning For The 49ers
The San Fransisco 49ers obviously present a very different challenge than the New England Patriots, and it's our job to gameplan for them! It would be if we were coaches, at least.
Just like last week, I'm asking you to put yourself in Mike Smith's shoes and try to plan for what the Niners will be bringing our way this weekend.Unlike the Pats game, I'm less concerned with the 49ers offense, which is missing running back Frank Gore, and a lot more concerned with a very solid defense that will test Atlanta's offensive line. But you're welcome to come up with your own worries, of course.
Weigh in like you're at the doctor's office, please.

49ers only have half a team
Of course, the 49ers have a solid defense. But superstars dont bring home titles…teams do. The Rams dont even have their special teams together so we cant gauge anything about the 49ers from them accept that the 49ers beat teams that they should beat. The 49ers’ offensive is one dimensional. They couldn’t produce a wrinkle if Pat Summeral was their offensive coordinator. On top of that, Frank Gore wont help them from the bench or on the field if he plays. All of this means the defense is gonna have to carry the whole team.
If their defense has to play for extended periods, it wont matter how many Patrick Willis they have on the field because the Falcons have way too many weapons.
Id be more concerned about stupid penalties and costly turnovers than what the 49ers can do without the ball.
The 2000 Ravens only had half a team and they won the SB
I’m not saying the 49ers will win the SB this year, but it is possible to win with a dominating defense, solid special teams, and an offense that doesn’t make stupid mistakes (turnoevers, penelties). Don’t forget, the 49ers were down 13-16 in AZ in week one late in the 4th quarter and the 49ers marched down the field almost exclusively with the pass. They can pass the ball when they need to. Personally, I see this game as a toss up.
Don't trust this guy. He lies.
Tha Falcons Stink!!!!
Weapons, you guys have weapons? where i didnt see them. you guys have more weapons than a group of Nuns! you dont have farve to save you in the last second and you dont have the best running back in the game (adrian peterson) so you suck again!!!
Yeah, buddy....wrong thread

I liked the comment in one of the earlier discussions
about the SF defense being able to take away White, Gonzalez, and Turner. Thats fine by me. I’m pretty confident that Norwood, Jenkins, and Finneran can move the chains enough to frustrate and tire that defense, allowing Turner to make some nice plays.
Its true. I'm a Falcoholic! I just can't live without Falcohol!

i doubt that son
we have depth at defense… and can you please tell me what the falcons defense ranks? because if theyre at the bottom, looks like our 1 dimensional team will Run all over you!
uh huh
Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.
Hopefully with Norwood back and the bye week emphasis on the OL
the running backs will be able churn out some tough yards like they did last year and set up some big play action passes to Roddy. This offense has been pretty quiet so far.
By the way, I think the SB Nation servers are running a little low on Falcohol today…very slow
Make Hill throw the ball
Defense – smash their running game and make Hill throw the ball. Our pass defense has had some issues this season but they should be able to handle SF’s QB. Get a pass rush going and blitz a few times.
Offense – complete a few deep passes, work Gonzo in the 8 to 12 yd range, a few RB screens to Norwood and run Turner. Control the ball, wear out SF’s defense and protect Ryan. Try something really daring and play Norwood in the three slot a few times. A LB cannot cover him in the open field.
Serious?
In a clearly non-trash talking way, I just want to tell you that Patrick Willis is dang fast, one of the only LB’s I’ve seen chase down a WR going full speed from behind. This guy is impressive.
C'mon
I’ve heard this story on another thread. Chasing down a (at the time) 31 year old WR (who was reported to run a 4.60 40 in 1999) is somewhat impressive, yes.
I’ve seen his 40 listed 4.49-4.51. Willis is dang fast.
But not lightning fast. If the situation arises in the game, I promise he will not chase down Norwood (4.32 40) from behind.
A LB cannot cover him in the open field.
This is the truth.

Oh, we shall see my friend
We shall see! I havent seen him outrun by anyone just yet, since his rookie year. If Norwood gets 50 yards behind him, then he will outrun him, but besides that, I don’t agree.
I hate to pound this point home
But if Norwood gets into open space, he runs just about as fast as anybody in the league. Unless he slows down, Willis is not going to catch him. That situation may never come up, but I feel very, very confident in predicting that.

you guys here have a lot of confidence for no reason
Hill can beat you threw the air kid. just because we run most of the time it doesn’t mean we cant pass. watch out for Josh Morgan and Vernon Davis, oh, and Brandon Jones!!!
... something just flew right out the window

Gap Control
Defensively, I am concerned. If Turner hasn’t had a breakout game yet because of the O-line, then we should be able to postulate that much of the 49’er’s success running the ball is also due to THEIR line…not necessarily Frank Gore’s talent. He’s comparable to Turner in that he’s a finisher. Once up to speed, he’s no fun to try to tackle. Gap control, then, is key, and without personnel, BVG’s got to do some scheming to disrupt the middle of the line. If SF’s O-line placement isn’t predictable, then ATL’s secondary gets a whole ton better immediately.
Offensively, we gotta stay on the field. Please refer back to the Defensive Concerns. Without rhythm, our offense looks pretty mediocre so far. Please refer back to the Defensive Concerns. What builds rhythm is lots of plays. Taking away the short to intermediate passing game is easy if the run doesn’t work. We’re back to gap control.
I’ll be there either way.
How many more days, Lord, must I walk throught the wilderness?
GO FALCONS!!!

this guy knows
what he’s talking about… unlike some people that think the Falcons D is ranked in the top tier. they’re not, they rank 27th or less in everything…. Fantasy outlook “Start Glenn Coffee”
Agree about gap control
With Atlanta’s inferior talent on the D-line—there’s a reason the coaches worked out a number of veterans this week—Babs, Abraham and the gang are going to have to be disciplined and recognize potential gaps pre-snap. It’s all about the film study.
And I don’t care that Frank Gore isn’t in the lineup. If the D-Line doesn’t execute well, it will end up being Glen Coffee’s coming-out-party, as the SF O-line is no joke.

I agree
With everything you (and AnOldBird) said, until this:
the SF O-line is no joke.
Last year, they were OK as run-blockers and terrible protecting the QB. Early returns this season show they are equally bad at both: They are #32 (dead last) in Adjusted Line Yards (run blocking) and #30 in Adjusted Sack Rate (they’re tied for third most sacks allowed). The reason their raw rushing yardage total (#15 in the league with 107.8 yards per game) looks decent is because: 1) they are a run first team, with an abover average number of attempts, and 2) two Frank Gore TD runs against the Seahawks, 79 and 80 yards (right now they are ranked #2 in 10+ yard runs, but that has more to do with the RB’s than the O-Line). The Right side of the Line is especially bad. The thing is, in this game, our weakness (D-Line: stopping the run, pass rush outside of Abraham) is matched up against their weakness.
May the least bad unit win!
Currently it’s our guards that are the weak link on the o-line in pass protection.
Last week Coffee had several holes that he missed that would have dramatically improved his yardage. He’s a rookie and it showed. It sounds like this week he’ll get some more chances along the same lines and it will be up to him to take advantage when they occur.
I’m really looking forward to this game, really feels like a good match up that should make for a good game to watch.

While I agree with you, orang3b, that the SF O-line is not the top unit in the league, I don’t think the Adjusted Line Yards statistic is particularly useful. Why? It is a statistic which is affected heavily by situational play-calling. SF is a heavy short yardage running team, which makes for a bad adjusted rate. As you noted, their overall total is solid.

Well,
They are also #32 in “Power Success” (FO’s definition – Percentage of runs on third or fourth down, two yards or less to go, that achieved a first down or touchdown. Also includes runs on first-and-goal or second-and-goal from the two-yard line or closer). They were #7 in Adjusted Line Yards last season, so maybe they’re still just working out some kinks in the system… but they haven’t been good so far this year run blocking.
Falcons preparing for Crabtree. Huh?
That’s what the AJC is reporting. Can this really be true? Hard to imagine that he only needs 3 days to get game ready. The Swami sees a drug test in Mr. Ledbetter’s immediate future.
it's too late for crabtree to start he may only get like 3 touches
At least we don’t have to worry about Frank Gore and a bad defense
MC "The Hammer"
is not going to play at all against you guys, for one, he’s not ready. Second, he has to wait two weeks before he can play. Score one for you guys.
The Hammer?
That’s funny because for the past three weeks his nickname with my 9ers fan roommate has been Cashtree.
Maybe there is no Heaven. Or maybe this is all pure gibberish — a product of the demented imagination of a lazy drunken hillbilly with a heart full of hate who has found a way to live out where the real winds blow — to sleep late, have fun, get wild, drink whisky, and drive fast on empty streets with nothing in mind except falling in love and not getting arrested...Res ipsa loquitur. well...
I’m not really sure what to think about this game since i’m really not that familiar with the 49ers. They seems to be a team that is definitely headed in the right direction with a solid defense and a respectable running game (with Gore in at least).
Overall as a Falcons fan, I think I like this matchup. I think it’ll be a tough game, but the big weakness on our team right now seems to be the D against the run, so if their running game is suffering from injury, that’s a huge advantage for us. Additionally, it’s tough to know what to think of our defense… they looked amazing in the first game, decent in the second game, and less then decent in the 3rd game. If the first game defense shows up (and i think they will definitely play better than they did in NE), you gotta feel good about this one. I think we have a very good chance to keep them from scoring a lot of points.
What i’m really going to be watching in this game is the offense… i think that’s where we win or lose this one (as will be the case in many games this season). I know SF has a good D, but we have an offense that is capable of being among the best in the league. If they play the game they are capable of, we shouldn’t have a problem winning this game.
Let them loose!!!!!
Norwood: Easiest, coaches need to follow through on their pledges to utilize him more in the main ofense. I know he’s been injured but, he wasnt getting a lot of plays when he wasn’t.
MATT RYAN: I swear, he is being babied. They give him all the praise in the world, why not give him the reigns, total control. Use the no huddle more and more importantly, TAKE SHOTS DOWNFIELD. This team might be the one that uses the long ball the least, i know Douglas is gone but im pretty sure Roddy can burn a little (and Jerius is back).
LIKE I SAID BEFORE
We need to utilize Norwood in the screen game, when he is in open space and out from behind the line of scrimmage(cuz he cant break tackles very well) that is when he is most dangerous, I love the slot receiver idea as well.
NO DOUBT ABOUT IT, NORWOOD WOULD TORCH WILLIS IN A FOOTRACE TO THE ENDZONE!
Let Ryan loose, he is throwing the ball very quickly to slants or TE across the middle, he needs to trust his line more and let the longer routes develop and throw them- take a shot!!
I beleive they will look much better this week, I predict a 24-10 Falcons win cuz the Crab thing is gonna keep the 49ers too busy the rest of this week!!! HE WONT PLAY AGAINST US ANYWAYS!!
lets go falcons
l-dawg
Well, here's my long and very wordy opinion.
First and foremost. Look back to week 1, when Ryan took several shots downfield. He overthrew almost all of them. I’m not hating, many of you here on the Falcoholic know that I certainly don’t hate or even dislike any of the Birds players, but Mularkey may have looked at those passes and said, “He’s not ready for those yet.” or something along those lines. We don’t know. We’re fans (well, most of us) and we don’t know what goes on behind the scenes like that when it comes to the pros. This season is still young, our whole offense sans Tony G. is incredibly young, just be patient. This team is built for the long haul.
About Norwood. 40 yard dash times are a bit misleading. All a 40 yard dash time tells me is how fast I can run 40 yards in a straight line. Not to sound like a big headed person here, but it wasn’t that long ago that I could run in the mid 4.6s in the 40. Granted, I’m not toting 225 pounds around at that speed, but how often does that kind of speed matter, when just about every skill position runs that fast? Only in the extreme cases (4.3 and faster) does it really suggest that an athlete can be a super freak. What coaches REALLY desire is the 10 and 20 yard times. The 10 yard time is measured for explosion off the line and low-end acceleration. This time is especially important for DBs and Linemen, as the 10 is used for changing directions and closing burst, and the 20 is used mainly for explosion and safety coverage distance. For linemen, the 10 suggests what kind of burst they have off the ball, and we all know most linemen don’t run too terribly quick in the long distance, and I would imagine most coaches don’t care how fast their OL runs the 40. The 10 and 20 would be useful for screens/pulls and whatnot, but again, no OL will run 40 yards downfield unless there’s a touchdown.
The only time a 40 would really be relevant is in a deep-threat receiver or in a kick returner. Otherwise, they don’t carry quite as much weight. Very rarely do athletes get to stretch the field like that.
Obviously, there are many more things that come into play when it comes to speed. Running fast in one direction is fine (see Usain Bolt) but more often than not, the opposing team doesn’t just let you run in a straight line. That’s why 40 times are a bit misleading. It’s about so much more than just running 40 yards. It’s about how fast you can close in 10 yards, or if you’re at top speed by 20 yards. It’s also about how well you can change directions.
Also, Norwood probably would beat Willis in a footrace, hands down, but professional sprinters can actually train for different short distances, including the 40 and the 100. The only way to really know would be to watch it happen.

Good explanation of 40 time relevence
The whole Willis vs Norwood in a footrace thing is pretty irrelevent since Willis rarely goes 1v1 against anyone in passing situations. He either blitzes or more often plays centerfield and tries to ball hawk. I don’t know how fast Willis is, but I know he’s fast enough that his position on the field when a QB sees him reletive to his position on the field when he breaks up or intercepts a pass can confuse QBs. He’s basically Ray Lewis 8 years ago without the off the field problems.
Willis ran a 4.3 at the combine. He’s a freak of nature.
Last week was one of the few times we’ve seen him sent in on a blitz it’s not something that occurs constantly, but once in a while only.
When he sniffs out a screen (happens regularly) he often tackles the player just as the ball is arriving for a loss.
I’m looking forward to this match up, Falcons and 9ers used to have a good thing going but I don’t know all that much about your team anymore. Sounds like your O strengths pair up nicely with our D strengths so it should be a fun one :)
Our O is maddening a lot of the time. Hill is very accurate in the short-medium game. Our TE is not the master of the perfect catch like Gonzo, but holy crap he’s a load to bring down, every time he has the ball you think he just might break a long one. A bigger issue I see currently is with Gore out, Coffee isn’t the receiver that he is. Our WR’s thus far have produced more in blocking that recieving. we have 1 WR touchdown catch on the year so far.
Coffee
He’ll get better. He’s a pretty good reciever, he had a bad game last week as far as catching the ball, but imo it’s a no harm, no foul situation because he would have been stopped well before the first down on his drops. What Coffee lacks is Gore’s explosiveness, he would have had about the same game as Gore did against the Seahawks except the two 80+ yard runs would have been 20-30 yard runs. He’s a good fit for the 49ers game plan because he doesn’t have negative yard plays from dancing. He’s actually right now kind of a poor mans Michael Turner, just hasn’t grown into his man strength yet.
by Johnnysixnut on Oct 8, 2009 12:47 PM EDT up reply actions
That was very poignant and well thought out
But Norwood is not just straight line fast, he is very shifty at the line of scrimmage, and has a change of direction skill that is unbelievable. Not to mention, just watch when he catches a screen pass how long it takes a defender to track him and start moving towards him, by then Jerious is usually already at the first down marker.
Oh I don't doubt Jerious's speed
Whether it be forward or sideways or backwards or on his hands :P He’s one of the best there is at being shifty. I watched him break a TB defender’s ankles in person at the TB home game last year. It was awesome.
How to beat the 49ers
Don’t let the game get ugly. What’s that saying about fighting a pig? You both get dirty and the pig likes it. The 49ers game plan is to not turn the ball over on offense and let their defense win games. If both teams bring their A-game this game should come down to field position and mistakes: penalties and turnovers. Whoever makes the fewest mistakes wins the game. I think the 49er defense will take away the running game and let Atlanta dink and dunk but keep the ball carriers in front of them, drives will stall on dropped passes, bad throws, penalties, sacks or turnovers. If however Atlanta plays mistake free football for a whole drive, they have too many weapons for any defense in the league to cover them all. The 49er offense will have a lot of three and outs, Sean Hill will get sacked 4 times, but they probrably won’t turn the ball over more than once. Hill is the master of getting sacked and not fumbling, he’s got good mits. Yeah, so if I’m an Atlanta coach this week I’m preaching ball security and no penalties.
I see the game being similar, it’s really hard to get the ball away from hill most haven’t managed it so far. He’s tossed 1 int and that was on the TE breaking off his route (Sing corrected this) and 1 Fumble that occurred when his arm was hit throwing the ball, he has a really quick and compact throwing motion, it was a really good play to get him that way.
You’re going to have a really hard time running the ball, our corners play a lot of press coverage to keep them in longer than they would like. Our pass rush is a work in progress, we get a lot more pressures than sacks, but we have a couple relentless guys up front.
Ahmad Brooks is a name you likely don’t know, he’s been injured and on the bench learning for a while now, starting to get into games. He’s really athletic and quick and worth looking out for if your into up and coming players.
Just to make it clear
I’m a 49er fan, so I know who brooks is. I don’t think the Falcons will beat the 49ers, but neither result would suprise me they’re very evenly matched. The Falcons have a little more talent but I think the 49ers are playing a more disciplined mistake free game right now and it’s a home game that the falcons have to fly across the country for. The game last week vs the Rams was nearly flawless and the game against the Vikings was at a level where if it was an NFC championship game it would have been a good, well played game. I think it’s a game that either team could lose very easily if they come out flat because I think a 14 point lead ices this game at any point, just don’t see either team comming back from more than that.
Solid Defense?
The top 15 defenses in the league are solid, the niners are on the cusp of being an elite defense. I seriously think they will finish in the top 2 or 3 this season. You had better hope you can shut down the niner offense completely, because points will not be easy to come by. Look for Matt Ryan’s sensitive skin to get subjected to a lot of rough treatment. 24-13 SF
I wouldn't be so sure
Our line is great in pass protection.
