Ask Canal Street Chronicles!
I don't know about you guys but I've been looking forward to this Monday night game against the Falcons for quite some time now. This will be the Saints first division matchup of the year.
In preparation for this very important meeting between our two teams go ahead and ask me, lead blogger for SB Nation's Saints blog, Canal Street Chronicles, any questions you may have about the Saints. Myself and CSC readers will check in periodically and answer them to the best of our ability.
But let me ask you guys a question as well...Can you handle the Saints?

Did Drew Brees make a deal with the devil?
Seriously? Down 24-3 with 5 seconds to go in the 1st half and the Saints still blow the Phins away 46-34. That is down-right scary.
Next question is this: What do you think the Saints biggest weakness is, and how can the Falcons take advantage of that to pull off an upset?

Saints Weakness....
I think there are two. The first one is way more significant than the second though.
1. Saints special teams IS the biggest weakness. ( If your gonna have a weakness though, that’s the one i want )
2. Drew’s hieght. Miami batted down many passes yesterday. I think teams may start to catch on. ( keep your hands up ) So Bell and PT can run freely!
Good luck!

agreed (saints fan here)
our special teams does not look special at all!! it’s really unfortunate. at the end of each game i hear commentators talk about complete teams/complete games, but the saints are really lacking in the special teams department.
another weakness? defense in the middle. given the aggressive nature of our defense, we leave a lot of open spaces. i’ve noticed decent tight ends look very good over the middle and with gonzales i’m definitely worried.

the saints really the best team in the nfl i understand they are great and no one can stop them.i realize their passing game is un-believable and their rushing game is un-stoppable but how did greg williams make their defense so good was it the addition of the pro-bowler sharper or the fact the injuries that plagued them last year just arent there.well never mind i guess we will just call them great

Our d is the wrost in the league based on the Dallas game, Dallas has 1 player that is any good and he destroyed our D. So I guess the Aints are going to go for a record and run up 70 or 80 points. I wont be watching this game thanks to our performance in Dallas to a crappy team, just imagine how bad the aints are going to drill us. 100 points is not out of the question. Hell maybe 200. Don’t take the Dallas thing too much to heart! I thought we were cruising for a beating after the Bears game: if we kept playing as half-arsedly as that, someone was going to roll us over eventually – it just happened to be the Cowboys.
I really doubt Smitty will let us play as feebly as we did at Dallas again – even if we lose to the Saints, I reckon we’ll give them a good fight.

What is up with the Mike Bell/Pierre Thomas train?
I keep hearing that Bell is the short-yardage back, but now he looks like he might be edging into a featured role. Does Bell really look better than PT, or is this a case of Sean Payton stubbornly refusing to believe that Thomas is a good back?

i would say mike bell is great but alot of his big runs come in the second half after pt has beat up and tired out the defense

Payton really likes Bell
Check out what he told Jay Glazer just before the season started:
jay_glazer: I think the Saints are definitely a tough team. They can be one of the more explosive teams as long as Drew Brees stays healthy.
By the way, great story … coach Sean Payton has secretly been pumping up third-string RB Mike Bell to me for the last month. But get this, he even convinced his son Connor to draft Bell in his son’s fantasy league. Peyton thinks he can be the every-down pounding back they need. So Pops told Connor to take him as a late-round sleeper and promised that he’d be a great pick for him. So Connor responded, “Mike Bell? Who’s Mike Bell???” Sean said, “Trust me Connor, I might have some insight into this.”
Expect Payton to play both Thomas and Bell for the remainder of the season. Whichever is the hot hand in any particular game will get the most reps. Bell was that guy at just the right time yesterday.

I'm a little perturbed by the level of love
But at the same time, Bell has played way above the level I thought he would, so he’s clearly helping you guys. Perhaps I’m blinded by my respect for PT? Nah.

Mike Bell...
just runs really REALLY hard. It’s really a beautiful thing to have Bell, PT, and Bush as our RB’s. They are all different and effective. I personally think keeping PT as the starter is important. It has a few side-benefits that might be crucial, or they might be just flat out wrong and don’t matter at all. Who the @$% am I?
I think a “hungry for playing time” Bell on the sidelines adds to his effectiveness. Mostly because he looks to run a little angry, I dig that. I think that his slashing is better in the 4th qtr. Arm tackles are less effective.(Maybe we should try popping Reggie off a couple late in the game?)
PT seems to be a model of consistency. He takes what the defense gives him, and then a little more. Sometimes a lot more. That’s what I think is best for our offense. A RB like PT that always gets his 3. Period. However, comma, I think Reggie is a more important cog. Other RB’s, maybe even Mike Bell can do what PT does, but no one can do Reggie.
P.S. I added a little accent to the punctuation to make up for previous posts short-comings.

Is that you Mike Smith?
We can’t give away any secrets.
I really don’t know. When teams have committed extra people to pressuring Brees and stopping the pass, they’ve been beat with the run and vice versa. So far, the Dolphins did the best job of shutting down both, but that only lasted until the end of the second quarter. I hope no one figures out the perfect formula to stop them this year. As long as Brees is healthy and on the field, there probably isn’t one. He’s more than a QB, but also an assistant coach and offensive coordinator in some respects. If not for him, Payton would have kicked the FG at the end of the first half yesterday and the game might have played out differently. I’m sure your coaches will study all of the game film and find some way to at least slow down the Saints’ attack. I’m not arrogant enough to expect a blowout. It’ll be a hard battle against a team in the Falcons that doesn’t want to go down by three games in the division.

Piggy-backing on Dave's question.
I know the Falcons can’t duplicate the Jets’ gameplan (overload blitz and have Darrell Revis shut down half the field; or drop 8 into coverage), so ignore that one. They probably can’t replicate the Dolphins’ gameplan, since they’re a 3-4 team, too (although, it seems they had some success blitzing a Safety, with Yeremiah Bell getting 1.5 sacks).
I want to know exactly what Buffalo did to slow down the passing game (I know you guys won the game running all over them, with 5.8 yards per carry – just pretend for a minute the Falcons can do a better job than that). Were they blitzing a lot? Dropping lots of guys into coverage? Buzzing certain routes with LB’s/DE’s? Bumping & getting physical with the WR’s at the Line of Scrimmage? Seems to me like theirs is the gameplan that the Falcons could use…

They played in Buffalo
Also, they play a decent Tampa 2 defense, and they managed to get Brees off balance for much of the game with minimal blitzing.

My best guess is having a bad-ass game of Paper, Rock, Scissors play calling.
Really, I think that Miami came out well, but when we adjusted, they didn’t.
So, take a guess as to when we are going to “get it” and drop people back to stop the run. But we might know that and come out running. On the other hand, we might think you are going expect that and start out passing. Which would suck if you didn’t change your scheme in the first place…

Run the ball
We haven’t been able to run yet I don’t know what’s wrong with Turner but we all know the less time their O is on the field the better. IF, big IF, we can run the ball and get a little lucky on defense I think we have a shot. If we can’t control the clock then it’s a wrap and we’ll get embarrassed on Monday night. Hopefully we can pull it together

historicaly.......
the bucs and bears have given us fits.
cover 2 has (in the past) made things difficult for our pass happy team. nowadays…… we can run so the question is much tougher than it ever was.
a good example, do everything Miami did…. but do it for the entire game. this is a team that builds momentum faster than any team ive ever seen. the trick is being able to bring a lot of pressure, but still have the capability to cover large portions of the field. and never, i repeat, never, let this team get a TD and not return the favor on offense. your D needs to commit to the fact that, yes, the saints will score, and yes, they will score ALOT, but more so than trying to stop them every set of downs, always try to force a turnover. if you can force a turnover and score off of it, then Payton tends to get a bit antsy and tries to force the ball around to much.
all this being said, a team (like Miami) could do all of the above, and still lose. its why the saints are 6-0. realistically, if anyone had found a way to stop them, they wouldn’t be undefeated.
besides that, have fun dirty birds, and i cant wait for the days when Ryan inevitably becomes that elite QB he will (unfortunately) be, and all the epic QB showdowns between him and brees!.

I have a question ...
Consider the following quote: "Can we go undefeated? Yes. I do think we have the players, the chemistry, we have the heart and dedication, the coaching staff, we have the players"
Reggie … you already said you have the players! Oops, that wasn’t a question.
Um, well, think Sean P is ticked at The Tush Lover?

I think Sean Payton wants nothing in the world more than for Reggie to be an amazing player. Payton drafted him. I think there would be more of a problem trying to get Payton to give up on Reggie.

OK
But to be fair, you did not really answer my question.
I know he drafted the guy, and I know he likes him a lot, but you can be damn sure Mike Smith would knock a DBird down a notch or two if he came out with some outlandish guarantee like that.
To be honest though, I’m glad he guaranteed it. Now he just pissed out every defense he’ll face going forward. Good luck though.

Sorry
I didn’t understand the question. I get it now.
I don’t think Reggie’s comment was that crazy. It certainly wasn’t a guarantee. He was asked whether he thought they could go undefeated and Reggie merely acknowledged the possibility of that happening. He didn’t say the Saints WILL go undefeated.
Had Reggie actually made an outlandish guarantee, I definitely think Payton would be pissed.

I'm convinced ATL's offense will have a better game vs NO's 4-3, even with the heavy pressure...
I think 3-4 defenses are still a problem for Ryan. He’s just going to have to adjust to them. I think this will be a better game. If we have balance, we have a chance.

The bad news is...
The Saints also have the ability to transition into a 3-4. They used it a bit against the Bills I believe. What we have seen so far is an ability by Williams to adjust very well. He was able to adjust to the Dolphin last week and shut them down in the second half, allowing the offense to catch up.

I don’t think they would switch exclusively to a 3-4 but I would have faith that Williams could counter.

Reporter: How will you address all of the dropped passes?
Mike Smith: I don’t think that we were as sharp as we have been catching the football. It’s something that is very fixable. It’s VERY fixable.

Why? Here's why!
1. The Saints are 6-0.
2. People other than Saints Fans are touting great things for our team.
3. They cancelled “The View” in my area.

Yeah,
where do you think I came up with “Fat, dumb, and happy!” :-) Thanks for the concern.

I'm very sympathetic
toward people forced to live in a world without Sherri. Isn’t life hard enough?
