Mid-Season Thoughts: They Aren't Who We Thought They Were

After witnessing the most painful Falcons loss of the young season, I began to ponder exactly why our team, young and inexperienced as it is, can't seem to hang with the big boys.

To date, we have played both of America's teams, New England and Dallas, and have come away 0-2. We can sit here and make excuses all night long. Refs sucked, defense sucked, we were in their stadium, etc. etc. Regardless of my opinion on those, especially the ref one, the fact is, we lost. What's worse is the Saints won today, putting us 2 games behind, now.

So as I sit here typing this, I'm wondering "Why on Earth did we look so bad?" I kind of posted about it in the ATL-DAL open blog, but to start off, here are some observations I've made throughout the season (in no particular order):

1) Eric Weems can play ball. He's a great athlete and he'll hopefully be around for years to come.

2) Jamaal Anderson was made to play DT. Aside from when our entire D started to fail, JA98 had some good plays at DT. I really think he's found his spot on our defense.

3) Where is Michael Turner? Could last season really have been a fluke? Many of the haters have said that his big games were against the dumps of the NFL's rushing defenses last year, but to amass 1,700 yards is no small feat, fluke or not. However, Turner hasn't shown up this season, leading many Falcons fans (including myself) to wonder what's going on. He's looked a step slower this year, and with Norwood out, we need someone to step up. Snelling has done a good job in the backup role, but how long can Turner hold out with his increasingly negative production?

4) Despite having some crippling injuries, there isn't a game we can't win. I know many of us will be questioning our team after the miserable loss to the 'Boys. I don't blame you in the least. We played miserably, and that's not the makings of a great team. We're still a "good" team with knocking on the door of "decent" imminent. That being said, we've been competitive in every game we've played.

5)The Ewing Theory. I first learned about it on one of Bill Simmons' columns on ESPN. I believe he's tinkered with it since he posted a column on it 8 years ago. But if you don't know the theory, you should look it up. I think it fits this team perfectly.

Allow me, if you will, to speculate for the future. While not directly involving one player, the Ewing Theory fits the Falcons perfectly. The schedule, crappy as it is, can't get much worse next year. Regardless of how this season ends (Please, God, let us get 9 wins) some of our expectations won't be met. With the way we played Dallas today, this season could go south quickly if we do not adjust.

As I began thinking about the Saints being so good this year, I came to the realization that the Saints are 2 weeks away from equaling their total wins from last year. "Why the sudden change?" I asked myself. Without doing an absurd amount of research, not much, if anything, has changed from last year's Saints team. Malcolm Jenkins was added. I believe DC Gregg Williams was added this year, too.

The Saints last year were plagued with injuries, most notably on defense. On top of that, they had many, many recurring injuries to keep them 'unhealthy', if you will. This year, they've spent another year together, they've gotten their health right, and look at them, they're destroying EVERYONE.

I think next year is our year. Gonzalez has one more year after this one on his contract, I believe, and we'll have Harry Douglas/Peria Jerry/Brian Williams (if he can still play) back from injury. Now how does the Ewing Theory fit this team, you ask? Well, look at the Saints now. They're dominating, they probably won't be stopped this year, while we play backseat to them. Then, the Ewing theory kicks in next season. If the Saints hold their team together, nobody will notice the secret juggernaut we're building in the shadows. Then it's game time. We've been severely hurt by injuries this year. When we get everyone back next season (and keep them here) I think we can make a run, and I think we'll surprise some people along the way depending on how ugly this season ends up. Not saying this season is gone, as we're still 4-2 and in a decent position, but we may not quite get where we want to this year.

In short, I think we're going to end up as the Saints of last year, just with 9 or 10 wins. Injuries + schedule may just be a little too much for this team to overcome this year.

Any thoughts or opinions are welcome here. :)

I have continued to say...

…that my ideal season is a winning one to break the curse, anything more than that is gravy

Playoffs would be nice

but agreed, they’re gravy. Team’s heading the right way, let’s not push the panic button yet.

Being a fan of the NFL makes you bi-polar...

….or so I’m convinced. Every week is a roller coaster of opinion changes. I do it. Most of you do it, I’m sure. The eternal pessimist in me wants to write off the season and point out that we still have to play the Saints (x2), the Giants, Eagles, and Jets. We could easily go 1-4 in those games (if played at anything close to tonight’s level), putting us at 5-4 with 5 games that we should (dare I say should??) be favorites or equal in. Great teams win all games they should win. This team is not a great team. 4-1, maybe 3-2? Nine wins does not get you into the playoffs in the NFC, at least not in the South and East divisions. Best case scenario, we kill the curse and have high expectations in Matty-Ice’s 3rd full season, with a healthy club and a few more Dimitroff draft-day specials. Worst case, we get first hand knowledge of what we are (7-9, with solid key-position stars, and room to grow), and Smitty/Dimitroff get to the drawing board armed with a middle draft slot and young talent returning from injury plagued rookie seasons. Not the worst thing we’ve been through, as fans of the bird, but it just feels wrong. Matty-Ice doesn’t seem the type to let his team, nor himself stay stagnate. Smitty won’t sit on his hands, and we don’t have many egos. I “feel” a Patriots-esqe 10-6/11-5 non-playoff but respectable none-the-less season (possibly determined by a certain tie-breaker,….ehem,…….head-to-head record).

Nice Fanpost .

Saints are a steam roller.

I’ve picked them to reach the SB against the Bengals. Still though, I’m not ruling out a Falcons win ;)

What is with the post-game taunting lately?

I appreciate all the Cowboys fans who came by and wished us well. I just don’t see the point of riling up a fan base after a tough loss.

It's just an internet thing, I fear

I honestly think half the guys coming over here think they’re engaging in some good-natured post-game trash talk, but there’s a very fine line there.

I agree with Dave

Dave might remember me from some friendly banter on “Canal Street Chronicles.”

I also enjoy some good natured poking and prodding to find the button. But let’s not forget that we are ALL loyal fans of our favorite teams. That, in itself, should guarantee a certain amount of respect between kindred spirits. I’m not endorsing holding hands and singing “Kumbaya” by any means (‘cept maybe if you’re a Patriots fan), but lets attempt to keep things on a mature, respectable level. We all, as fans, make the National Football League what it is today – the most fantastic spectator sport on earth.

Thanks much for hearing me out.

I think we'll pull 9 or 10 wins, also

Anything more than that might be too optimistic at this point.

Stop making me Rec your comments!

I think this team has a 9 or 10 win ceiling, but again, is that so horrible? That could be good for a wildcard and it would still be good to break a terrible, terrible streak that we all hate.

I don't like saying that 10 wins is our "ceiling"

sounds so morbid to put a “ceiling” on your win total when honestly the ceiling right now is 14.

know what you believe in and why you believe in it

Agreed!

We have some tough games coming up for sure, but none of them are unwinnable. I think we will probably have one more game like NE and Dallas where we just don’t look good against an evenly-matched team, and I think we’ll come through and shine in at least two games that we’re expected to lose. Our biggest weakness so far hasn’t been any deficiency in a particular aspect of our game so much as a general failure to “click” every couple of games. If you ask me, this is a pretty good problem to have: we’ve already done the hard part by assembling a team that can win, now they just have to play consistently at the level they’ve proven themselves capable of. Our two losses have been so ugly that the temptation is to second-guess the optimism that this Falcons team tends to inspire, but the bottom line is this that even with a roster that is heavily compromised by injuries, we usually look really good and occasionally look elite. Remember last year when we took an ugly loss to the freaking Bucs in the second game and suddenly the same fanbase that had been jacked up by the opener against Detroit was questioning everything from Mike Smith’s coaching to Matt Ryan’s future as a quarterback? Experience has conditioned us to expect the worst when it comes to the Birds, but the Falcons were for real last year and they still are. Time will tell if the problems that caused us to flounder against NE and Dallas get worked out this season, but if they do, there could be some unexpected NFC South drama late in the season.

meh

This is much like those who cried doomsday after the NE loss when just about everyone and their mother had it marked as a loss to begin with. It’s the second loss in a sixteen game season, not the end of the season entirely, so let’s grab ahold of something solid, take a deep breath, and back away from the cabinet under the sink because it’s going to be ok.
